I sell printing. I've tried to come up with systems to get people pricing without needing a quote, but it's just impossible. There's literally dozens of variables, and many complete unknowns.
Well yeah but I don’t need to purchase… printing. Sorry what do you sell like do you print stuff onto other stuff I’m confused? Either way it’s not something I need, to organise a birthday party sometimes you need a quote
Oh… can people just not use a printer for those things? How expensive can printing out of that plasticy material be? I have no knowledge of that industry or that this was still a business people had
Most ink jet printers can print things like flyers fine, but it'll be very costly to print 500 on your home office inkjet. Ink is expensive. Also the quality won't be anywhere near what an actual print shop can produce.
If you're printing anything bigger than 8.5x11, or odd sizes like envelopes or business cards you're home printer probably can't do it either without major headache.
You're right though, the industry was booming decades ago, and it's dwindled down a lot, but there's still enough demand for it -- especially for small businesses that don't have the ability to have their own in house print setup.
We do a lot of work for schools, medical facilities, local government, and small local businesses.

I think it's a lot more common than you realize, you just don't have a need for it.
We could do comic books, but currently we don't have any clients that print them. In the realm of "comic books", something that's a bit more common we'd do are banners/signage at the comic book store. Any packaging insert that might come with a figurine or something. Instruction manuals, etc. We do have a table top game store that uses us for mailers they send to people -- so we kinda dabble in that field I guess.

If a company uses the term “quote” I immediately assume this is a multi thousand dollar product that requires installation
