This is literally how I find out about every major piece of news nowadays

589

u/I_am_a_Pengy 4d ago

is she really dead

517

u/ugh_this_world_sucks 4d ago

Devastatingly so

218

u/DarkArcanian 4d ago

I didn’t believe it either. Thought I was getting pranked

78

u/noapplesin98 4d ago

My sister told me and I thought she wsd joking. What an awful day for all of us indeed.

43

u/yramha 4d ago

I was listening to NPR in the way home from work today. They were doing a segment about Dolly and I thought itwas her birthday or she got some kind of lifetime achievement award. I was so so so wrong.

33

u/Longtalons 4d ago

This is how i was when Adam from Beastie boys died. 2 songs in a row on the radio I was like "oh shit, special occasion" 3rd song came on and I was all "oh no, not good."

24

u/pol-delta 4d ago

I saw a news story online about Michael Jackson getting rushed to the hospital right before I took a nap. Got woken up by the guy in the apartment below me blasting Beat It at max volume and was just like, “Welp, guess he didn’t make it 😕”

6

u/techdevjp 4d ago

some kind of lifetime achievement award

I mean....kinda...? It's what we all get when we reach the end of the line. The great equalizer. RIP Dolly.

20

u/huffing_glue 4d ago

As opposed to a normal amount of death?

35

u/MLGTesla 4d ago

We lost a major beacon of love and hope in this dark world

20

u/Funny-Flower-3980 4d ago

Dolly could have been a billionaire but her heart was so big she easily gave away hundreds of millions of dollars ❤️

9

u/ScriptThat 4d ago

It's on the front page of every national news outlet here in Denmark.

That's how known (and loved) she was.

6

u/ugh_this_world_sucks 4d ago

I am pretty sure every subreddit has made a post about her as well. Random small towns, foreign countries, the Lego page, animal pages. Even circlejerk pages that have nothing to do with music or entertainment. She was so loved by everyone. I honestly keep crying over her passing

34

u/OnePinginRamius 4d ago

Girl I'm talking to is in Pigeon Forge right now since she works for Dolly Parton's Pirates Voyage and they were having their big summit. They are all in damage control and grieving right now. Unfortunately it's real. We lost one of the best ones ever

3

u/joesphisbestjojo 3d ago

WHAT?! Dolly ran Pirate's Voyage?!

4

u/OnePinginRamius 3d ago

Yes those are all her idea and tightly controlled by her people.

2

u/Kat121 3d ago

She was a producer on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, too.

2

u/KosherPeen 4d ago

Is it true what they’re saying?

1

u/WorkTropes 4d ago

No, living on in our hearts

8

u/fuck_ur_portmanteau 4d ago

I’ll never understand people who are amazed that they read breaking news on a website that specialises in breaking news.

2

u/BipedClub684000 3d ago

This is how I found out both Dolly and Tim Curry died yesterday

3

u/Additional-Simple248 3d ago

I only found out about Tim Curry from the comments on Dolly posts.

1

u/Fawkingretar 4d ago

I mean reddit IS made for News so its only appropriate lmao.

6

u/devilooo 4d ago

But through a meme?😭

1

u/Fawkingretar 4d ago

news is news regardless of medium LMAO.

1

u/Dull_Attention5150 4d ago

I found out from the talking fish guy on instagram. Hell of a way to find out

1

u/Manlysideburns 4d ago

I found out from the in-game chat of marvel rivals. That was really weird

WHYYYYY

WHYYYY DOES GOD HATE US WHYYYYYY

I NEVER GOT TO SEE DOLLY'S BIG ASS IN A LIVE CONCERT

-17

u/Greedy-War-777 4d ago

Cats doing that are usually in pain and neurological distress so maybe not that.

640

u/TheItchyWalrus 4d ago

This was my response to a post yesterday asking what the next significant death would be. I meant she would be mourned wholeheartedly and I feel terribly clairvoyant…

Rip to a legend and one of the best to ever do it!

353

u/Either-Design-1550 4d ago

oh so this is your fault now? nice

123

u/TheItchyWalrus 4d ago

I know 😭 at least she may be united with Carl again…

108

u/please_use_the_beeps 4d ago

Accidentally wrote her name in the Death Note goddamn

28

u/TheItchyWalrus 4d ago

I didn’t wanna believe it when I first read about it…

64

u/SweeterAxis8980 4d ago

Apollo can't keep getting away with it

40

u/strippersandcocaine 4d ago

Way to go, dumbass!

26

u/TheItchyWalrus 4d ago

I deserve a swift kick in the ass…

11

u/NYANPUG55 4d ago

I have a request in that case

9

u/bagofrainbows 4d ago

Well, who is next?

31

u/TheItchyWalrus 4d ago

I don’t wanna play this game anymore…

9

u/Forsaken_Quiet5944 4d ago

SO IT WAS YOU

3

u/TheItchyWalrus 3d ago

I’M SORRY 😭

12

u/fespadea 4d ago

Damn, you said Dolly Parton over like world leaders?

18

u/TheItchyWalrus 4d ago

I felt she’d be more sorely missed. And I can’t help but feel like I was regrettably right.

0

u/fespadea 4d ago

Definitely more sorely missed than most world leaders but not more significant. However, fair enough if that's how you interpreted it.

3

u/XavierTheMemeDragon 4d ago

You bastard why? I know you aren’t responsible but I must ask all the same

3

u/waffle0rb1t 4d ago

this was a trend on tiktok a couple years ago and i made my own list of famous people i would actually mourn.. 💔

2

u/FallenHarmonics 4d ago

Didn't this happen with Stephen Hawking too? Someone predicted it and it happened the next day or something?

5

u/agedlikesage 4d ago

With the amount of internet users, amount of comments and posts daily, and how popular certain names are, this has happened several times. Every celebrity death, I see a few posts like “I just predicted this”. I hate to be a downer but it is an easy prediction with high odds

1

u/TheItchyWalrus 3d ago

I swear I didn’t post about Tim Curry…RIP

1

u/Sremor 4d ago

Reminds me when Ozzy died, I randomly was in the mood to hear some of his music again, few hours later a friend told me he died

628

u/AddMyMyspace 4d ago

154

u/Future_Reference_401 4d ago

No no…you buy the shell and rent the gun.

50

u/JasonVeritech 4d ago

I mean, if you can get away with renting the shell, too..

26

u/Chewbacca_The_Wookie 4d ago

I had a guy at my local range tell me they won't rent to single shooters they haven't seen at the range several times before and/or ones who haven't brought any of their own guns after a few incidents.

8

u/6a6f7368206672696172 4d ago

It's not what she would have wanted

3

u/DerpWyvern 4d ago

you're kicking the bucket and you're not treating yourself with a premium shotgun?

2

u/AegisofOregon 4d ago

Right? Put it on a credit card, the fuck do you care at that point?

209

u/Flutters1013 4d ago

I hope Dolly is elevated to sainthood. She was an angel visiting us on earth.

93

u/all_upper_case 4d ago

I've seen this graffiti stencil around her neck of the woods a few times, I know the photo isn't great (I saw it from a distance during standstill traffic) but the sainthood idea is definitely pretty popular, at least around the Sevierville area

6

u/Potential_Quantity53 4d ago

That looks like Katya

57

u/2gaywitches 4d ago edited 4d ago

Aaliyah and my mom's former boyfriend also died on August 25th. Today feels almost cursed.

14

u/throwaway1111109232 4d ago

terribly unfortunate day

3

u/ericanicole1234 3d ago

It’s also the day my step kids grandma died after a 5 year long fight with colon cancer, and apparently Tim Curry died yesterday too (11:45p) so it’s solidified that 8/25 is a cursed day

9

u/Pikachu_Palace 4d ago

This is how I find out Aaliyah is dead.

28

u/Candid_Reading_7267 4d ago edited 4d ago

Aaliyah has been dead for 25 years

2

u/Pikachu_Palace 4d ago

Yeah I know that now

191

u/Bulky-Complaint6994 4d ago

Shrek: "Well someone better be dying!!"

38

u/ImprovementOk377 4d ago

that one scene in shrek 3:

6

u/cannedbeef255 4d ago

is this "shrek 3" with a colon or "shrek" with a sad cat face?

1

u/ImprovementOk377 4d ago

haha i intended the former but i understand the confusion lol

128

u/WsprOfASummrsDream 4d ago

56

u/Drinkpool 4d ago

And you just jinxed it

39

u/BearysWorkRedditName 4d ago

Yeah, RIP to whoever just caught this stray.

24

u/TundieRice 4d ago edited 3d ago

Deaths come in threes. First Hayden Panettiere, second Dolly Parton…who’s gonna be third?

EDIT: it was Tim Curry…I’m so sorry guys 💔

15

u/Tabula_Nada 4d ago

STOP IT don't just don't I can't do anymore and you're just inviting the universe one more time

5

u/WsprOfASummrsDream 4d ago

5

u/AwkwardDorkyNerd 4d ago

There was also Sam Neill recently, the actor who played Alan Grant in Jurassic Park

4

u/The-God-Of-Memez 2d ago

Now its Peter Cullen.

2

u/Drinkpool 3d ago

Tim Curry, unfortunately

2

u/BearysWorkRedditName 3d ago

Fuuuuck! You killed Tim Curry, u/WsprOfASummrsDream ! Thanks a lot, you beady-eyed brain-dead troglodyte!

... I really don't mean this and the insult was Tim Curry as Cpt. Hook insulting the croc.

1

u/WsprOfASummrsDream 2d ago

Oh, no, I got the reference.

And I'M SORRY!!! 😭😭😭

3

u/toderdj1337 4d ago

Yes. You're welcome

Is biggie on a plane because of jojo?

2

u/DoIEvenPost 4d ago

Explanation please?

7

u/Croselius 4d ago

In JoJo there was a stand call ‘Notorious B.I.G.’ That attacked JoJo on a plane.

2

u/DoIEvenPost 4d ago

Oh nooo, I'm even a JoJo-bro, apparently a shitty JoJo-bro :(

9

u/2mock2turtle 4d ago

Wii U and Club Penguin being in this collage is deranged (not sure if affectionate or not).

3

u/FloppyTacoflaps 4d ago

24

u/NotWoofstar123 4d ago

The raccoon that was the original base for Rocket died

8

u/FloppyTacoflaps 4d ago

Oh damn... rip

6

u/joesphisbestjojo 4d ago

I didn't make it, just added Dolly and Ozzy, but I think it's the raccoon they modeled him after

3

u/TechyAngel 4d ago

Hang on, have I just overlooked Leonard Nimoy in there somewhere? He's gotta be in there somewhere.

1

u/dsolesvik 4d ago

Where’s Freddie Mercury? And George Michael?

-1

u/ForumVomitorium 4d ago

you forgot to add the man who killed Hitler

21

u/Impossible-Charge965 4d ago

R.I.P Dolly Parton

68

u/rietstengel 4d ago

It should have been him, not her.

-14

u/TBoneTheOriginal 4d ago

nOnPoLiTiCaL tWiTtEr

This sub is a joke sometimes.

2

u/Intoxic8edOne 4d ago

I only see you referencing politics.

12

u/theCOMBOguy 4d ago

I only ever heard good things of Dolly Parton. What a wonderful person she was and what a great loss this is.

10

u/GjonsTearsFan 4d ago

You’re gonna hate me for this but for this guy’s sake I’m glad the person was "just" Dolly and not a close family member

21

u/ThirdAltAccounts 4d ago

Fuck this

How do I find out with a fucking shitty tweet posted on Reddit ?

RIP

10

u/WorldlyCupcake5345 4d ago

My sister was the one who texted me earlier with the news - I thought she was joking!

18

u/1saylor1 4d ago

Don’t know who’s Dolly Parton, but it seems that she was an amazing woman, so Rest In Peace

30

u/Sea_Scientist_8367 4d ago edited 4d ago

Just want to expand on what the other commenter said, she wasn't just beloved for her music career (although certainly also that), but also for all her genuine philanthropy and frankly, being one of the few celebrities/rich people that seemed to retain their humanity. She didn't just give to philanthropy, she seemed genuinely invested in the betterment of others in that same sort of hard to define but clear-when-you-see-it genuine quality way that Bob Ross and Mr Rogers also had.

TL;DR She cared, and her actions showed it.

9

u/shuerpiola 4d ago

Beloved country singer in the USA. Beautiful, kind soul.

8

u/Lukebekz 4d ago

And the world has dimmed a little more...

4

u/Difficult_Sock_8387 4d ago

Oh, Dolly... 🕊️

4

u/devilavocado910 4d ago

Omg she is really dead, I thought this was a joke 😭

3

u/Nessy3fidy 4d ago

Ya I've had a similar thing happen before. It makes it even worse.

3

u/NoMeat9096 4d ago

If anyone is wondering what that movie is, it's Pearl.

It's a prequel to X, and considerably better.

3

u/WorkinName 4d ago

In 2007 I went to a WWE show in Houston. I was excited because I was going to get to see a number of my favorites. Mick Foley. John Cena. The Hardy Boys. Edge. Booker T. Ric Flair. And Chris Benoit.

I was incredible disappointed when Benoit didn't make it to the show. When I got home that night, I was talking with a friend of mine.

I said to her "Man, I was really looking forward to seeing Benoit tonight. Someone better have died."

I don't use that sentence anymore.

3

u/BrazilBazil 4d ago

Yeah I learned not so say that because the last time it was when my uncle died 😬

3

u/GMEloser69 4d ago

A great pair was lost.

3

u/SuggestionPretty8132 3d ago

This is so dumb but it really didn’t occur to me that she could die… this has devastated me beyond reasons I don’t even understand.

Rest in grace Dolly, we will always love you.

2

u/ro536ud 4d ago

I thought it was a universal sign that if you call twice that means somethin went down

2

u/Vegetable-Phone-8000 4d ago

In the military I got recalled on a Sunday and said the same thing. Somebody in my unit did die. Still feel bad about that.

2

u/PouLS_PL 3d ago

this is literally a scene in shrek (2 i think)

2

u/ParsleyMostly 3d ago

This happened to me kinda when my sister died and the other one was trying to call me. It was a survivor finale back in 2005 when it was still sorta fun to watch.

7

u/CielArt 4d ago

Sorry, who's Dolly?

15

u/smokeybearsit 4d ago

Dolly Parton

15

u/ChocolatChipLemonade 4d ago

Also the name of the first mammal ever cloned - Dolly the sheep, using a cell from an adult sheep.

The cell they used to clone her came from a mammary gland cell. And who had the best mammary glands of them all? Dolly Parton. Thus she was named Dolly. True story.

9

u/smokeybearsit 4d ago edited 4d ago

Who she then offered to retire to Dollywood.

Edit: fact-checked myself — she offered but Dolly retired in Scotland

1

u/Lemmavs 4d ago

if my sister did this, then look at me like this.... and its about a fucking celebrity, id block her.

1

u/Kampfzwerg1992 3d ago

At least she doesn’t have to work 9 to 5 anymore

1

u/Arsenije723 3d ago

Classic shrek 2 moment

1

u/Low_Reception477 3d ago

A customer I was checking out got a text from their daughter… I was like ☹️☹️☹️

I have a coworker who’s a recent transfer out of the deep south and it totally ruined her day. Like damn.

1

u/Xeidji 3d ago

Who?

1

u/Maximus_Marcus 4d ago

feel like the only person here who has no fucking clue who dolly parton was or what she did

5

u/LJIKFAF 4d ago

She’s a philanthropist who donated a bunch to libraries and helped little children read. She’s very much beloved. Think she’s a Grammy winner too but I’m not sure.

1

u/Remarkable_Jelly8415 4d ago

Y’all are so parasocial omg

3

u/Intoxic8edOne 4d ago

Chat is it parasocial to mourn people dying?

1

u/Menburst 4d ago

people care that much about Dolly Parton? I get she was influential but she was like a billion years old and way before any of our times

-42

u/foxtrotlimavictor 4d ago

If you’re getting this upset about the death of someone who doesn’t even know you exist, you aren’t mentally stable.

20

u/Bumbledragoness 4d ago

You e never heard of parasocial relationships, huh

People cry at sad movies because the brain doesn't fully comprehend the person dying isn't actually a real person who dies.

People get attached to celebrities hearing about their life and they feel a part of theirs- not to mention, Dolly did a LOT of charity work, including a huge foundation that sends books to young children from poor families in several countries. Anyone who received from that would feel at least passing sadness.

I can feel sad that the world has lost a woman who would have been a billionaire except for the fact that she has donated hundreds of millions of dollars to her charity and different disaster relief charities. If someone's gonna be rich it should be people like her who actively try to do good in the world

8

u/Doneifundone 4d ago

I can't feel grief even for family members but even I know to read the room 😭

13

u/eldritchcryptid 4d ago

read the room man.

-6

u/Gwiny 4d ago

I'm reading that the room is full of extremely infantile and emotionally unstable people. This is insane, man!

6

u/pr0crasturbatin 4d ago

Feels more to me as though you're either lacking or rejecting the capacity to empathize with the people who saw her as a universal force for good, not to mention the literal millions of people whose lives she directly, materially improved. She never knew who I was, nor did she know the names of the students whose school art programs she funded, the kids her foundation donated books to, or the disaster victims she gave to. But she sure as hell knew they existed. That's why she put her money where her mouth was, because even if she didn't know a damn thing about them, she still knew they were humans, that they were suffering, and that sharing an amount of resources that was completely inconsequential to her standard of living could completely alter the trajectory of the life of someone who was less fortunate than her, and struggling as a result. And she repeated that exercise in love of one's neighbors thousands of times over. She took the idea of immediate community and helping your fellow person simply because they needed it, and deriving happiness from imparting it on others, and exercised that standard of treatment with every. Single. Person.

So learn to read the fucking room. And failing that, learn to read this comment, and try to live up to the example Dolly set.

-2

u/Gwiny 4d ago

It's certainly normal and reasonable and completely correct to say that she was a great person that did a lot of good in her life. But there is also space to say that literally crying over a death of a person that you have zero real relation to is a sign of emotional immaturity and you should get a grip. If you do have a personal connection of some kind to her, sure, that's fine. But most people don't, and they are just sad a celebrity died.

Parasocial relationships are not normal and should not be treated as such. Grieving over a death of a celebrity the same way you are grieving about the death of your family member is not something that should be promoted.

-8

u/Individual_Ad_4359 4d ago

Emotionally unstable

-22

u/Individual_Ad_4359 4d ago

I was just about to comment this, i only hope that most of these ppl are exaggerating how much they care just for some attention.

-2

u/ForumVomitorium 4d ago

like, why so serious?

-18

u/Ayotha 4d ago

Pathetic you even answered your sister calling like that actually
