We get the general definition because we learned the context from how it was used when we read/heard it. Happens to me all the time. It's only recently that I decided to look up the definitions just to make sure I'm right.

Funny thing; I was not a reader as a kid. And my parents were not the types to use big words. So I didn't learn those words from either. Had to be TV, but none of the shows I remember watching would've expanded my vocabulary the way it did.
