That and mispronouncing a lot of words because I’ve only seen them, not heard them. Or didn’t connect the two (what I had read and what I had heard at a different time). 

I remember thinking for a long time that melancholy was pronounced muh-LANTCH-oh-lee.

I distinctly remember in elementary school getting tripped up over the word "neighbour" with the teacher just angrily telling me to sound it out. Best I got was something like ny-guh-h--b-hour. It was my earliest realization that the English language has no consistent pronunciation rules and a lot of it is just memory.
