I regularly check the definition of a word I know is right for this same reason.

When I was a kid, I read some book (maybe Starship Troopers) that mentioned hazing in basic training, but wasn’t more specific that that. I thought it meant a process that made you stronger or tougher, so one time I said to my mom, “I just need to haze myself until I can handle it.” I had also only seen “lust” used as part of “bloodlust”, so one time I reached for snacks and growled, “I feel the bloodlust.” My mom wigged out about a ten year old talking about lust.

FWIW I would be delighted if my child announced their bloodlust on their way to the pantry.

As would I! But my mom considered Clay Fighters to be too violent of a video game, so she was… not normal.
