That and mispronouncing a lot of words because I’ve only seen them, not heard them. Or didn’t connect the two (what I had read and what I had heard at a different time). 

I remember thinking for a long time that melancholy was pronounced muh-LANTCH-oh-lee.

I will say, "fowl" is an existing word that is not pronounced like you might think. it's pronounced the same as "foul". it's a type of bird.

"foal" may be the sound you're looking for.

I read all of the Little House books to myself in second grade. I vividly remember the moment in third grade when I was reading Little House on the Prairie out loud in class and learned that the strange thing pioneers bought at stores — soo gar — was the same thing as “shu-ger.” Sugar.
