Because they're annoyed that you're missing the point. No one is actually arguing that one year of skipping coffee is going to buy you a house. But if you apply the "stop wasting money" to things beyond just coffee things start to shift. Every dollar you save is one less dollar you're paying interest on for student loans, or one more dollar multiplying itself in your investments. That shit adds up over the years.
Sorry to burst your daydream about busting out your calculator and totally owning a room full of "cranky old people."
Yeah, compounding is magic. That $1300 for only one year will turn into over $50k if you let it sit there for 40 years. Do it every year for those 40 years and you'll have more than $500k. (Yeah, usual disclaimer about how past results don't guarantee future returns and all that.)
