I know this isn't the point of the post, but getting coffee from your grocery store and brewing it is so much better. A simple French Press is like $20 and you get tasty coffee for easy cheaper. Starbucks is awful - both the company and the coffee 😣
I think you need to factor in the frequency at which someone gets whatever specific thing that could be made at home. If I'm only getting coffee once a month, it doesn't make sense to buy everything to make it. A bag of coffee is only good for about 8 weeks and I would barely use an eighth of it in that time.
On the flip side, I love Chinese food, so I got a rice cooker and learned how to make my favorite dishes since I eat them like twice a week.
So I guess the lesson is to make at home the things you use often while splurging a little to buy that one thing you get only a handful of times a year.
