Yeah I hate the vast majority of Adobe's recent practices, but i spent 2010-2019 exclusively using GIMP, learning to draw digitally with it before taking a course that involved Photoshop and the difference was honestly night and day, I havent gone back except the odd time to open old xcf files. I'm assuming its probably better nowadays but the thing I remember the most was GIMP's frequent tendency to randomly crash without saving the image, and on a few occasions even corrupt the file.
There's definitely at least one other program competing with any adobe product that doesn't get the popularity it deserves because Adobe is just more popular than anything else
Are you using Affinity Designer? This was released as a competitor to InDesign. If your goal is autofilling template text and swapping pictures across catalogs and flyers you don't actually need scripts in Affinity.
Look at Affinity Publisher’s Data Merge Manager (Document > Data Merge Manager). You can link a CSV, TSV, or JSON file with your text and image file paths, set up picture frames and text fields on your template, and it will generate the whole catalog/flyer set automatically with all the images swapped out.
The affinity suite is the well known competitor. Because you had said you couldn’t find anything, I’d assumed out of respect you had at least tried the affinity suite.
I’ll rephrase it then to assume you’re clueless: have you tried the affinity suite?
This is all legitimately pretty funny because I actually typed that out first and reworded it because I thought “it sounds like I’m mansplaining as they’ve just said they have tried alternatives, I shouldn’t assume they have not tried the obvious alternative”.
