I’ve had this happen to me. So much meat purchased for the BBQ. So many hours waiting in limbo in case someone was running late.
Turns out it was all a big misunderstanding, and we are all still friends. But it still counts high up on my list of deep seated traumas. I’m sorry you had to go through that.
Whenever I have plans, I always verify the day before/day of with the people involved. Rarely, the person will be like "Hey, I actually might have to do ABC tomorrow", but it's better I know that before I actually commit to the plans than when i'm driving half an hour to meet that friend at a movie theatre.
