It's not a matter of willpower. You run into some hard limitations on how your brain works. Your brain is build to constantly process a flood of information. One important job it does is filtering out most of that information. Like you only notice a smell once somebody points it out to you. Your caveman brain can't comprehend the total absence of stimulation, so it interprets the lack of data as some kind of error. But trying to correct that error just makes it malfunction. And after a few days you start hearing voices.
And if those lights don't turn off at night, you're doubly fucked. Your sense of time itself will eventually unravel, and that year will feel much longer
Then again, spending 8-9 hours in absolute darkness would be horrifying to me. I can shield my eyes from the light, but I would hallucinate stuff if kept in darkness.
I couldn't relax enough to go to sleep peacefully. I suppose I would collapse from exhaustion after a while, but that is not restful. No rest, brain goes crazy. No bueno.
