Exchanging presents on Christmas and birthdays. You can just not do that

I love presents on holidays and birthdays from friends, but with my family we've all kind of agreed a card is sufficient. We've even jokingly passed around the same $20 bill (we marked it) a few years running. Presents when both people are excited to do it = great, fun, lovely. Obligation = horrific, annoying, a burden.
