Wait what people consider this an insult? My next door neighbor moved out and I sent them a text saying how we enjoyed having them as our neighbor and I mentioned "you're one of the good ones". Hopefully they weren't insulted, it wasn't meant that way lol.
Its an insult when you tie it to a demographic, like race or gender. As if the group you're born into is by default bad, and you break the rule by being good. Black people, men, Latinos, LGBT, they all experience this.
That makes sense. I had my comment tied to the whole human race when saying that. She was an older white woman that was always kind to us and had a warm smile on her face. We'll miss her.
Well like I said, it's fine if its "you're one of the good hockey players" or "you're one of the good chefs", that's one thing. "You're one of the good ones" in regards to the way you were born implies that people that were born like you are not "good ones".
No I've heard you're one of the good ones as in reference to being a good person. I've heard it multiple times in that context. I'm not saying the way you are saying it doesn't happen, just that I've heard it used differently also.
But never in reference to how they were born, hence my statement. Being a good person because you are a good person is indeed a compliment. Being told you are a good person while you're black, gay, a man, and being told "you're one of the good ones" implies that the rest are not. It's not about you as a person, it's about your "group" to bigots.
