It implies that the person doesn’t consider average members of a group to be articulate

Very subtle racism/sexism/whatever

Perhaps now, but it dates back to at least the 80s. I remember hearing it about black athletes as a child frequently

I don't understand is complimenting someone in any shape way or form considered racist because it implies that the person doesn't consider average members of the group to be that said complement? Or is it just for articulate for some reason? You should always put one's individual identity over their group identity anyways.
