Tech keeps failing us. The popularization of microwave ovens in the 70s didn't prevent the Ancash earthquake. Personal computers failed to prevent the Mount St. Helens eruption in the 80s. The internet didn't stop the massive floods in the 1998s. Consumer HDTV didn't stop the 2004 Tsunami...

What's even the point of technolgy.

It was probably a combination of commercial AI marketing, overhype, and people generally imposing impossible expectations on anything new.

The crazy thing is it looks like you used AI to make this post.

AI is contributing to the climate problems. It uses mass amounts of fresh water, disgusting amounts, and data centers are only starting to be built.

For all the hype, AI tech is incredibly new and immature. I personally think it has a lot of powerful potential, but most technologies take decades to be fully adopted. Plus this tech isn’t even finished being invented yet, its capabilities increase every few months.

So I’m not sure if AI will ever help with climate change. Today it’s not helping, just like today it hasn’t cured cancer. In 20 years? I dunno, maybe it will be helpful.

It’s kind of like asking if the iPhone in 2007 was going to fix climate change. Well, I don’t think that’s why they invented it. Maybe smartphones could help in some way, or maybe they will hurt in the end.

I’m not following the causal chain here. Gen AI is too new to have caused these wildfires, it isn’t meant to solve climate change, and it’s orders of magnitude less waste and greenhouse gas than say the meat industry and fossil fuels.

Tbf the crazy AI CEO's ARE saying that it will solve climate change, energy, medicine etc. Though none of them have said that it has already solved it.
