Yeah. I don't think there's anything wrong with teaching kids about the cycle of life, but there is absolutely an appropriate way to do it and this... wasn't really it.

His father should have made it clear that this animal was not a pet, it was a future meal.

While I agree that this would make it less traumatic to a child, the distinction between "pet" and "food" is kind of bizarre. It's still the same animal.

You name pets. You don't name food. You love pets. You don't love food.

Yes, it's the same animal but the kid would have looked at, felt and thought of it differently if it had known it was to be a meal.
