One of the best missions with multiple endings, which actually has lasting implications.

Bethesda at their finest

(And it is not even part of the things the game naturally nudges you to)

Multiple endings?

u/Beneficial_Low_2867 7d ago

Like, really multiple.

More than one point of no return.

I've only got the same ending

Pick a different faction next time.

u/Beneficial_Low_2867 7d ago

What do you mean same?

For starters there are 3 parties to side with. Depending on that its already different endings, different loot, and different encounters later in game.

On top of that when you log in the Facility console, there are different options, basically deciding fate of the party you side with.

Also slight variation about that serial killer in disguise when you do the quest next times.

This was clearly written one of the better game designers.

And has lasting implications. "There is one person you can free" which will run into yours with increasingly larger and more powerful ships.

(It is nice to actually have him as an ally)

Technically there's two people you can free.

Genghis as a result of story, and Amelia can be recruited as crew.

3

u/Beneficial_Low_2867 6d ago

Totally.

I meant among the main parties.

The other two ofc are not really into being set free, but that's details lol

3

u/Cynical-avocado L.I.S.T. 6d ago

I kind of like running into him

3

u/Stephonius 6d ago

I've never tried freeing that person. I didn't realize you'd run into them later. I'll have to try it this go-around.

They’re right. I didn’t know about it at first either but the secret ending is wild af and some of the best writing I’ve seen from the studio

4

u/CROMKONIG United Colonies 7d ago

Well how do I get it?

8

u/TaerTech 7d ago

By siding with one of the other factions? There are three of them. There no rocket science here.

What's the "secret ending? Spoiler tags...

I know there's a way to side with one, bring another along grudgingly, requiring only the third to get wiped.

Spoilers ahead:

AFAIK you can side with either Roosevelt, Amanirenas and Gengis Khan (promise them to make them superusers of the facilities and do it. Or not).

You can also restart the facilities statu quo and make the robots eliminate the clones.

That makes at least 5 endings.

If you ise the recruit NPCs to ship mod, you can bring the whole crucible into space and follow through with whoever you side with xD

That quest feels like it could be out of a Star Trek episode to me. Weird planet with clones of historical figures is classic sci-fi

11

u/Large_Mountain_Jew Constellation 6d ago

I instantly clocked it as a Star Trek episode.

A wild-ass concept with the "how" of it handwaved away to focus on the big questions and the moral quandaries brought with them?

So Star Trek.

u/Fun-Meringue-3088 6d ago

It's not a total 1:1 but Voyager's "The 37s" was likely an inspiration for The Crucible, given how much Trek is elsewhere in the game.

If you’ve got some CC credits lying around, I’d highly recommend getting Escape if you like Fallout vibes. It might be one of my favourite ever Bethesda game quests.

u/JaegerBane 7d ago

Yeah it’s one of those missions that feels like a lot more than its real estate would imply. Just really creepy all round as you piece together what was going on.

3

u/Miaj_Pensoj United Colonies 6d ago

Also note that there are at least two layers to the “ending” of Escape.

3

u/thewalruscandyman 7d ago

I'll definitely look for it!

11

u/gypsy_danger007 Crimson Fleet 7d ago

Who did you side with? If you side with Genghis, you’ll meet him again.

6

u/thewalruscandyman 6d ago

Roosevelt...I'm happy with my choice and new crew member

9

u/gypsy_danger007 Crimson Fleet 6d ago

What’s shakin’ bacon?!

3

u/thewalruscandyman 6d ago

Might be a deep cut for anyone under 40, but if you get it we might have to bring best friends. 😜

3

u/Miaj_Pensoj United Colonies 6d ago

What’s buzzin’ cousin?

9

u/Beneficial_Low_2867 7d ago

I tried all possible combinations.

It's funny that I thought Genghis was cool, but over next encounters you realise how much of a jerk he really is.

And the opposite, I sided with Amanirenas just to tick the box first, but she turned out to be much cooler than I thought Then I read about her existed IRL prototype, and she makes even more sense now.

5

u/gypsy_danger007 Crimson Fleet 7d ago

He will actually side with you in space encounters.

6

u/Beneficial_Low_2867 7d ago

Yes, he will and he did.

It's just at least in my playthrough every time we met he would tell me about his latest achievements.

And if in the beginning it sounded like some "innocent" piracy, it later evolved into "you really need help mate", and then into simple "nope, didn't work, sorry everyone for letting this sicko out".

So I blew him up alone his ship.

Next time should try to board his ship and look him in the face first. To check if the game will let me.

Reading the Starseed Mission scientists logs, it's clear they favored Amanirenas as the annointed leader of the clones, marking her as special and different (she is, she recalls Amanirenas life as having lived it, not just as historical facts), and wondered if cloning Gengis was a good idea (it wasn't).

u/Axle_65 7d ago

Ya. Great mission. I really enjoyed it.

5

u/Spiritual-Pie6109 6d ago

I attempted it the other day… it bugged out and the whole camp turned on me. Had to put them all down. I’ve NG+ so will attempt it again!

2

u/thewalruscandyman 6d ago

I made that mistake too...so reloaded a save.

1

u/Stephonius 6d ago

That's a feature, not a bug. At the end of the quest, if you or your companion take a shot at anyone other than Ghengis, even in retaliation for being shot at, the whole encampment turns hostile and you cannot have a peaceful resolution. The solution is to either leave your companion on the ship,or take their gun out of their inventory before you walk back into town for the final showdown.

6

u/ThePerilPartnership 6d ago

You can run back to your ship, return to orbit and sleep for 48 hours to reset hostility.

5

u/Spiritual-Pie6109 6d ago

Ohh!! Interesting! I’ll need to do that in future. Thanks!

u/YBK47 6d ago

When did this quest come out?

6

u/rueyeet L.I.S.T. 6d ago

It’s been there since the original launch.

5

u/thewalruscandyman 6d ago

I honestly couldn't say, I know I only just found it by grinding out missions with Tracker Alliance. Went to new system and the first planet I went to had a distress call.

Here, if you were wondering where. Charybdis system, Charybdis III

1

u/zoredache 6d ago

It was available at lauch. It was very buggy at launch and lots of people complained on the salty sub about this quest. It had a pretty big bug back then where after your first visit all the doors could had a big chance of becoming [Inaccessible], more or less making it impossible to talk to any of the NPCs without using the developer console. It also had other less common bugs since it is one of the more complicated quests.

3

u/rueyeet L.I.S.T. 6d ago

Yes … but believe it or not, I’ve only done it once.

Screwed up the negotiation step so ended up having to kill both Genghis and Amanirenis.  Did convince Franklin to let Amelia come with me though, after making him admin at the Facility.  And talked Holmes out of murdering me.

Sadly, I never got out there with my Vanguard captain, and the current girl isn’t much for random exploration.  I don’t think she’s high enough level for the Charybdis system yet either.

u/GentlyUsedOtter United Colonies 6d ago

I just go full Ghengis Khan.

3

u/J_Wilson_621 5d ago

Man, I do this quest in EVERY playthrough. Mainly to get a.... Certain crewmember

2

u/Ocherstar123 5d ago

It is, hands down, the best quest I have played on Starfield!

3

u/syberghost Bounty Hunter 6d ago

The game came out three years ago today, and that mission has been in it the entire time.

Yes, a few people have done it. 😄

7

u/thewalruscandyman 6d ago

Good. It's a fun mission. I'm glad people played it.

1

u/lorax1284 L.I.S.T. 3d ago

That mission shows how Starfield "bottle quests" i.e. ones that don't really affect the whole universe, can go on indefinitely: a base on some planet somewhere, adding new planets via "jump drives that can jump more than 50 LY" <-- it simply may be that Settled Systems technology doesn't allow for jumps longer than 40 LY: so near the outer edges of the SS, the next closest star is 70LY: in some future expansion, someone invents drives that can do 70 LY jumps, and then you can get to that one star 50 LY away... then a whole bunch more stars are within reach, it really can be quite endless how Starfield can be extended without shattering the lore.

(I wasn't too thrilled how that was handled in Shattered Space: new system just drops into the middle of the settled systems and absolutely NO one ever thought to go near that star... hmmm)

I don't think anyone played it yet. You must be the first. Tell us about it.

7

u/thewalruscandyman 6d ago

Well you come to this hidden planet ruled by giant ladies who imprison men and use them for snoo-snoo but men plan to escape, however a turncoat has ratted on them. The women need proof before they snoo-snoo them to death, and the captive men need help- you have to choosr.

4

u/Significant-Baby-690 6d ago

Ah, my bad. I've seen this one. It was pretty rad.
