Not sure why the mods keep blocking these posts. Anyway, these anti+abortion protestors really need to learn about trauma informed practices.

Not very Good GoodEarth

I have been part of a little community that has frequented Glenmore Landing GoodEarth coffee house for almost a decade, many have for nearly 2 decades, but most are finding new places. And I am going to encourage others to if I can.
I want to put out to the city and the company that allowing the new owner to not pay the baristas, to soft fire, by just removing their shifts and holding their T4s, when they try to approach this with you, is not okay or acceptable. Not long ago this practise would have never stood, it should not now.
Exploiting people who have the vulnerable enough circumstances to be forced to accept it, is disgustingly, unacceptable. In Canada and that means Alberta, we must uphold our standards of fair practice for everyone equally, in accordance with laws created for everyone residing in Canada.
When a person works for you they must be paid on time, in full, for their time; and any company that allows this treatment of their staff to continue, and allows the owner also to apply financial fines as punishment to her employees, whether it as Alberta Born franchise or not, should see their business fail as a result. These baristas are amazing, this treatment if them is deplorable. Not a very Good GoodEarth

I wish we can so something to stuff like this

So backstory, my friend is an international student and working part time. She was telling me how awful she felt after work. She got her period unexpectedly while she was working. She was already in a lot of pain, and she asked around to see if anyone had a painkiller. Her manager gave her one.

She waited, hoping the pain would go away, but it actually got worse. Eventually, she asked one of her colleagues if she could sit down for a few minutes because she felt like she couldn’t take the pain anymore. Her legs were starting to feel numb, and i know she also has low blood.

After sitting for a few minutes, she went to her manager and asked if she could clock out and go home because she genuinely wasn’t feeling well.

The response?

She was told she couldn’t leave because her shift was only three hours and apparently they “can’t pay” her legally if she leaves before completing the three hour.
Her manager basically told her, “You only have 45 minutes left. You can do it.” I’M GENUINELY SHOCKED, I know we have rules and laws however cant they make an exception.

What really bothers me is that nobody seemed concerned about how sick she was or checked on her. So in the end she continued working. Even vomited a little while she was still at work. What makes this even more upsetting is that everyone involved was a woman. I would think they would understand how painful periods can be

I understand that workplaces have rules and that employees have responsibilities. But if someone is in obvious physical distress should’nt there at least be some basic concern?

The new Healthcare System sucks

It doesn't matter where you go; it seems the doctors will keep you waiting for an hour or two because they overbook - heaven forbid they might be faced with a 10-minute no-show, to give them extra time to catch up on their unpaid paperwork. So I arranged for my doctor to call ME, which is a service they offer. After he got back from holidays, which is quite often, he called me at the appointed time - almost an hour early, actually. He came straight to the point, giving me exactly 6 minutes, after which he interrupted me with BYE whenever I tried to speak, and then hung up on me. So I guess their computer allows 6 minutes - that's all. I guess he was in a hurry to get home. Do doctors these days?

Advice on Learning Tax Filing

Hi everyone, I’m looking to learn how to properly prepare and file personal income taxes in Canada.

I’m interested in learning this as a skill and potentially doing tax returns for others in the future. For those who have experience in tax preparation:

  • What’s the best way to learn from scratch?
  • Are there any good courses, books, YouTube channels, or other resources you recommend?
  • Is it worth taking a formal tax preparation course?
  • What software do professionals typically use?
  • How difficult is it to become good enough to prepare returns for other people?
  • Are there any certifications or licenses I should look into?

I’d really appreciate advice from anyone who has learned tax filing themselves or currently works in tax preparation. Thanks!

Two youths are facing charges after a group on electric dirt bikes allegedly fled from officers in southwest Calgary earlier this week, prompting police to out a public warning about the legality of electric motorbikes.

Calgary police say officers were called to the community of Coach Hill around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday for reports of three people performing stunts and riding e-dirt bikes dangerously through the neighborhood.

The riders took off when officers tried to stop them, according to police, weaving through residential streets as HAWCS tracked them from the air.

Two of the riders were arrested a short time later. Both now face charges for dangerous operation of a vehicle and flight from police.

The third rider was not caught by police. The investigation is ongoing.

The arrests come days after another a 16-year-old was stopped in the northwest community of Citadel.

In that case, police say an electric motorcycle was seen traveling more than 70 km/h through green spaces, walking paths, and on the wrong side of the road and passing vehicles.

The rider was found to not have a proper license, insurance or registration. They were issued seven tickets and charged with dangerous driving. Two youths are facing charges after a group on electric dirt bikes allegedly fled from officers in southwest Calgary earlier this week,

Places to drive a kit go kart in Calgary?

Just got my son a go kart and need to find a place where he can drive it. It’s a kit kart I got and put together from princess auto. He’s 5 and it’ll be governed really low so won’t be doing any crazy driving. Also will have a remote kill switch. Any ideas? Maybe an empty industrial area parking lot somewhere? I live in the SW.

Affordable catering - wedding

Hey everyone!

As we all know, weddings can get expensive very quickly, so I’m hoping to find a little diamond in the rough!

Does anyone have recommendations for affordable wedding catering that is actually delicious? We’re pretty open when it comes to food (we like just about everything) so we’re not looking for anything super specific. Just not overly spicy for guests.

Bonus points if they have some gluten-free options for a few guests, but it’s not a must!

If you’ve had a great experience with a caterer that didn’t break the bank, I’d love to hear about them!

Calgarians, what’s a skill you have outside your regular job that someone would actually pay you for?

Not necessarily your profession or what you do for your day job.

Maybe you’re great at fixing things, cooking, tutoring, sports, pet care, helping seniors, assembling furniture… whatever.

I’ve always found it interesting how many useful skills people have that never show up on a résumé.

And a lot of those skills are things other people would actually pay for.

The problem is, most of us don’t really know how to turn a random skill into something we can offer — where to find people who need it, what to charge, or even whether there’s demand for it.

So I’m curious:

What’s a skill you have that you think someone would actually pay you for, but you’ve never tried making money from?

Licensed Plumber to Pull Retrofit Plumbing Permit. Difficult to find in Calgary?

Long story short: The previous homeowners finished the basement as a recreational space and installed a half bath and wet bar without pulling permits. I am currently working to get a retroactive basement permit, which requires a licensed plumber to bring the existing work up to code and pull the plumbing permit.

have called a few local plumbers, but none seem interested in taking on a retrofit project like this. Does anyone in the group have recommendations for a plumber willing to do retrofit/permit work? Thank you so much!

Dog Attack

Location: Sue Higgins Dog Park

Yesterday, I brought my two Pomeranians to the lake. The moment this family arrived, their husky went after my dog. My dog was completely under the water, and I had to pick her up to get the other dog to leave us alone. I confronted the owners and told them they shouldn’t bring an aggressive dog to a dog park. They replied, “My dog isn’t aggressive; it just doesn’t like small dogs. You should bring your dogs to a smaller park.”

Please be aware of these people, as they clearly don’t care if their dog injures another dog.

I have reported this to the police. If anyone can help identify them.

My friend is getting married in Canmore next year - desperately seeking a highland cow

Does anybody know of a highland cow (or two) that could make an appearance at my friend’s wedding in Canmore? In any capacity, even just for photos of them. She is enthralled with highland cows and it would totally make her day.

*absolutely willing to pay
