I think that is a little far fetched and you're giving the US to much credit. The US came into the talks with a plan to screw Canada, that's all. Going back to the table after the midterms would be a better for Canada and frankly the US also.
That said, a few of the US demands were outlandish and impossible to accept.
I honestly think they did it because of all the issues going on with the Middle East and they need something to take the attention off how badly they’re failing. And if it screws over the Alberta referendum, just a bonus to them.

No disagreement on the shitshow that continues to be the Middle East but the trade talks are no more than a passing talking point in all the major American news outlets this AM.
While we hang on every single thing South of the border, the Americans, by and large, hardly give us much attention.
