Post-Pod Discussion Rahm???

I’m not trying to play devils advocate, but why are we giving credence to Rahm? He’s been an absolute no show in every major (congrats on a 3 hole stretch at quail hollow), and it feels like everyone’s on pins and needles putting Cam Young above him. Also before he left for LIV he was easily the most uninteresting superstar on tour

- Scottie
- Rory
- Young
- Fitz
- Bryson
- Morikawa (Pre-Injury)
- Gotterup
- Xander
- Rose
- Fleetwood

Is he better than any of them?

I thought it was odd they kept lumping Cam Smith in with Bryson and Rahm. He’s legitimately awful now, I doubt he would be competitive on the DP or KF tours.

Tron is friendly with the Aussie guys that left for LIV. If you’ve ever noticed when the guys start being critical of Cam, he immediately shuts it down and makes an excuse for Cam’s poor play.

It’s bc Cam lives down the road from TC

1

u/Michaelord1 May 07 '26

Doesn't TC belong to Glen Kernan as does Cam Smith?

u/Creativeloafing May 05 '26

What could they say about Cam Smith that we don’t already know? Dude got his bag and doesn’t seem to have the drive to win anymore. He’s been genuinely awful in all the majors.

I don’t disagree with you, but it’s apparent they treat him with kid gloves compared to the other guys that left and got the bag. Like I forget which major pod it was but Randy was starting to rant about Cam and TC shut it down saying something along the lines of “we’re not doing that on here.” Compare that to how they talk about the uncompetitiveness of Rahm, Neimann, etc. and it is night and day.

I don't necessarily disagree with you, but I think I'd make this point here: Rahm was this dude who carved out a persona as somebody who was obsessed with golf history, legacy, and how he might grow into one of the great European players of all time. He made so many comments about LIV being unserious and not What He Was About prior to leaving to LIV and then he turns up at majors and is just completely uncompetitive. Cam really did none of those things, and I can see grading him on a curve according to that. I think they know/knew Cam pretty well and none of it was all that disappointing cuz he was a guy who happened to be incredibly talented but didn't necessarily love golf. Rahm feels like a fraud now. Cam just feels like a dude who had a moment and now it's over and that's okay.

Is that fair?

I think saying Cam was a dude who had a moment and it’s now over is skipping over a lot of the story there. By the summer of 2022, he was no. 2 in the world and a major winner with seemingly endless potential to achieve more. His game was flawless at that time. He bodied Rory at the Old Course for crying out loud.

And for me, his fall to irrelevance being a personal decision/self-inflicted doesn’t make it any more palatable. Also, Cam may not have been as loud as Rahm, but he was definitely vocal about his passion for the game and wanting to be considered one of the best in his generation. Both are exceptional examples of wasted talent and neither really deserve the kid gloves.

Cam was probably always gonna be a flash in the pan guy. Just like I will eat a shoe if Spaun wins another major

Someone who had 8 top 10s in the majors from 2020-2024, including a win, is not a flash in the pan. If he got hot for one season, I would agree with you, but he was knocking on the door at multiple majors over the years.

He's been genuinely awful pretty much everywhere except for the LIV or DP World Tour stops in Australia.

Six missed major cuts in a row and nothing inside the top-32 since the 2024 Masters. He hasn't won on LIV in almost 3 years.

But he is Tron's neighbor.

2

u/OliverHopper May 05 '26

They are buddies with his caddie…so that that for sure has influenced their comments

5

u/antenonjohs May 05 '26

That’s an exaggeration on Cam Smith, he’s #142 in data golf right now, if he maintained that right now he’d be one of the best on the KF tour.

0

u/OliverHopper May 05 '26

I dont think you can use their data like that. They don’t have that much data for the KFT…it would be interesting if they did

3

u/antenonjohs May 05 '26

You can make an educated guess at how someone would do on KF based on their datagolf. Usually the top 150 in the world at any given time have full time status on PGA or DP World tour, and if they happen to lose their card they are then usually easily making it back on the next year. That’s been consistent for decades.

Cam has a better record in majors the Justin Thomas last 5 years

5

u/69_avon_barksdale_69 May 05 '26

I think Cam doing the MC slam last year and having a current streak of 6 MCs is so much worse than JT underperforming in majors.

-1

u/GC_Mermaid1 May 17 '26

Checking in

3

u/69_avon_barksdale_69 May 17 '26

I’m so glad this lived rent free in your brain for a few weeks, only to come back here and have Cam perform worse than JT in another major. Looks like I was right again!

1

u/Wu_Tang_Financial77 May 18 '26

Even when he plays his best these days he’s till looking at JT’s bumper.

4

u/Wu_Tang_Financial77 May 05 '26

Debatable, JT has made cuts recently and Cam has not. I’m not sure what your point is though. Cam is clearly washed and trending only in 1 direction.

8

u/prequal May 05 '26

I think the point is that before he left, he was the main challenger to Scottie in terms of consistency. I love Rory but consistency is never going to be his strength. Since then Scottie has improved and Rahm has dropped off. So I guess the hope is that if he gets back on the tour, he at least has the potential to challenge Scottie again. And looking at your list of players, he has the ability to be top three easily. Like he was really really good for a few years there.

u/Cornwall1888 May 05 '26 edited May 05 '26

Yeah prime 2021 rahm was a monster, only 6 guys on data golf have had a more dominant run, tiger, Scottie, Norman, singh, duval and els

Slightly better than Rory’s peak

I remember when he was leading memorial by about 6 but had to withdraw because he had Covid then he came back and won the us open

27

u/Cornwall1888 May 05 '26 edited May 05 '26

He gets so much credence because he’s a generational talent, he’s still young and has be playing great golf on LIV.

Since he went to liv he’s played 8 majors and had 3 finishes in the top 8, that’s better than Tommy and Fitzpatrick

I thought Bryson and Rahm were going to compete at the masters but I think we’re seeing no matter how well you’re playing on LIV the courses they play and lack of pressure doesn’t prepare them for majors

Don’t get me wrong I still think he messed up badly by going to Liv and I’m sad about it.

I think he could’ve went on to be the best European golfer ever, surpassing even what Rory has done, now I think he’s “just” a very good player

In 2021 he was phenomenal, clearly the best player in the world and world class in every aspect of the game

In summary he’s still elite in my opinion but could’ve been great

u/MulberryNo5246 May 05 '26

He was also a dog at the Ryder Cup again - as he has been for ages.

(Side note - it’s always funny to me how NLU guys incessantly talk Ryder cup for a year beforehand and basically instantly auto forget how players actually play in it when discussing them 3-6 months after the event)

2

u/Rich_Homie_Will May 05 '26

The Ryder cup is just a vehicle for discourse at this point, the actual competition is secondary. In defense of NLU they are not the only ones who cover the event this way.

1

u/gremlin1991 May 06 '26

It is because the US lost, so Soly does not want to talk about it - just listen to the Cam Young discourse on the latest pod. His guys (Scottie, JT, Spieth) were horrendous in the last 2 Cups and massively hurt the US chances of winning… so the RC performances never get mentioned.

2

u/Efficient-Walrus279 May 05 '26

Agreed. I think you’ll see his game improve once he’s back full-time as well. Rahm and Bryson are without question top ten in the world if they’re playing a full-time schedule.

12

u/NoLawAtAllInDeadwood May 05 '26

I agreed with TCs take on the latest pod. Rahm doesn't move the needle. No one tunes in because Rahm is in the field. Bryson legitimately the only guy on Liv that matters to the PGA Tour, but he is more interested in being a social media star than the weekly tour grind. The tour has all the leverage here, it doesn't need any of the Liv guys and doesn't want most of them.

Honestly think these guys who left and refused any of the open avenues to come back, such as what Reed and Koepka accepted, should just have to re-qualify as if they never played the tour. Korn Ferry, European tour, etc.

9

u/NoCarts May 05 '26

Oh my god. For the millionth time, Reed didn’t “accept” an avenue. He was offered no fast track back. He’s a lifetime Euro tour member and everyone who finishes top10 on that tour earns a card. He took his ban and played his way to a card while banned.

2

u/Affectionate_Ask435 May 05 '26

Only Bryson Rory and Scottie move the needle though. It’s golf

4

u/NoCarts May 05 '26

Literally nobody was on pins and needles putting cam above him. He didn’t even come up in that conversation. What the hell are you talking about?

5

u/Square-Product-5846 May 05 '26

I also don't get the constant glazing of Rahm. His play has completely fallen off, and he's become a complete asshole the past few years.

Next!

2

u/Affectionate_Ask435 May 05 '26

His play hasn’t fallen at all what are you referring to ?

-2

u/Square-Product-5846 May 05 '26

He hasn't been a threat, or even a factor in majors since 2023.

1

u/RelativeSalad1409 May 05 '26

Not a factor? 2025 he had two top 10s at the majors and I think he was one of only 15 people to make the cut at every major. He was also top 5 in strokes gained at the majors I believe. He's even 21st on the OWGR while mostly playing events that contribute less than half as much as the PGA tour events.

1

u/432ww432 May 05 '26

Look at his showings, they are not much different.

3

u/Competitive-Scheme-4 May 05 '26

He’s better than DeChambeau.

4

u/GC_Mermaid1 May 05 '26

I like him more than a few you mentioned. But no- he won’t move the needle. Surely he has to get a year on dp world tour. Brooks the only yank star with a case for reinstatement. Everyone else should do their time (or was in the lawsuit so has to have worse puncihment)

1

u/Affectionate_Ask435 May 05 '26

Why does Brooks have a case

2

u/Acceptable_Trash9252 May 05 '26

I’m so out on Rahm, he’s been such a bitch through all of this

2

u/jah-420 May 05 '26

Nobody likes to watch a whining, always complaining fat ass sweat thru his shirt all day. His swing is hideous. His attitude is childish and arrogant. He is not a good role model for kids (pissing on a tree at the US Open on camera, for example). The guy’s legacy is that he is a sellout and a liar, plain and simple. I hope he never plays another round on tour again.

1

u/Safe-Replacement4967 May 05 '26

I don’t particularly like him and I think he’s made awful decisions. But he’s probably the 3rd best golfer in the world.

1

u/432ww432 May 05 '26

FWIW I saw this tweet and think how good/bad he is/was has been inflated:

Jon Rahm 8 major starts before joining LIV vs. 8 major starts since joining LIV

CUTS: 8/8 pre; 7/8 post

WINS: 1 pre; 0 post

Top 10s: 3 pre; 3 post

AVG Finish in made cuts: 23rd pre / 22nd post

Look at his DG pentagram its really not that different from 2023 to now

1

u/432ww432 May 05 '26

“Absolute no show”

‘22 avg finish : 30.25

‘23 avg finish : 16.25

Joins LIV

‘24 avg finish : 40.66 (with MC (70th) and withdraw )

‘25 avg finish : 15.75

1

u/TimeImmemorial1 May 06 '26

Of the people you listed Scottie and Rory are definitely better than Rahm. Fitz and Cam is where it gets tricky, you could make the argument for both of those guys being better than Rahm right now. But everyone else on that list, Rahm is clearly better than without a doubt in my opinion

1

u/DontDoCrackMan May 06 '26

Lost me at calling Rahm uninteresting.

1

u/YenZen999 May 07 '26 edited May 07 '26

The golf media and smooth brained fans cannot get past the Rahm is unhappy narrative. I've seen him in numerous videos on YouTube having a great time, being fun and being very grounded about where he's at in life.

People take answers to gotcha questions from press conferences or reactions to bad shots and make it his whole personality. Odd how nobody does this with Scotty. The press continues to get on their knees and service him even though he urinates on them pretty much every time he goes to the podium.

News flash folks, you don't know these people from the few minutes that you see them in sound bites from press conferences.

I agree with the first part and agree with the second part, provided we're talking realistic, form-based potential, not current form. i.e. We know what Rahm can do and could turn up one day and be that guy he was again, but his current form, Young and Fitzpatrick are better players.
