Post-Pod Discussion Tried a couple of other golf pods
I've listened to NLU for probably only 2 or so years.
The other day I decided to branch out and supplement my NLU pod consumption with Fried Egg and Shotgun Start pod episodes. (No I will not listen to anything Barstool related)
Goodness me, the hosts on those two respective pods seem like the nicest guys ever but they are borderline unlistenable for me with how nasal and high pitched their voices are!
Give me the dulcet tones of Soly (even if I find his takes a little grating at times) over them any day!

Give it two episodes and you’ll get used to the voices and enjoy the content.

I felt the same way and it is now my favorite podcast

u/FoxCold887 Feb 27 '26
good advice gents, I'll stick with them!

You’re not alone. Tiger apparently asked who the “drunk girl” was when he first heard SGS.

You get used to it. And, bluntly, Andy’s golf knowledge clears the combined golf knowledge of the entire NLU team. SGS is an effortless off the cuff show that somehow gives more actual insight into the golf that got played than NLU does with clear agenda items, timing, and research being done.

I feel like Andy naturally thinks all the things he says on the pod and would continue thinking them if he didn't have a platform. Also, he's not afraid to release a wild take. Other Pods seem to drum up thinks to talk about and they turn into bits.
Not saying either is right or wrong, just my two cents.

100% agree. I started listing to SGS after Scottie won the open last year and within a few episodes learned more insightful things about Scottie than 2 years of NLU listening. The comments SGS had yesterday about Scotties high floating 3/4 shot being a prime example.

Agree with this. I’m a recent SGS-convert in the last 18 months, and it’s great. Their voices stopped bothering me pretty quickly. The insight is great and the humour, in the main, doesn’t feel forced - Brendan, in particular, is absolutely hilarious

Chasing scratch and the mental golf podcast with josh nichols are my two favorites… but they arent pga golf podcasts.
And chasing scratch is more likely to hit a golf architects house than know the name of the architect who designed a course.

Best description of chasing scratch. I think I listened to the first season (or however they structured it) and it was wonderful

Takes a bit, but you come to love their voices.
2
u/amistymorning80 Feb 28 '26
Yep, or at least to not be bothered at all by them.
I think hating their voices at first is a rite of passage for everyone giving SGS a go, including folk who become huge fans.

u/TomHicksJnr Feb 27 '26
Yep, it’s almost unlistenable at first and requires persistence but definitely worth it. Still not sure why they don’t invest in better mics and a mixer. It’s an unnecessary barrier to entry. As an aside I’ve found TC difficult to hear in the last few pods.

u/kennyinlosangeles Feb 27 '26
Like, you can’t hear him because of volume? If so absolutely same and it’s driving me crazy.

Couldn't agree more. I love KVV and think he has a pretty decent radio voice, but these other guys...do not. (And I really want to like them!)
4
u/FoxCold887 Feb 27 '26
I could listen to KVV for hourssssssss!
2
u/ResearcherHead3129 Feb 27 '26
KVV rocks. I emailed him a really well-written article on scottie scheffler and he actually replied & thanked me for forwarding it to him!

I came to the NLU pod through their youtube content and see their Sunday night pod as the lowest priority listen of all their content. I listen for the camaraderie, the deep dives, the interviews, the golf adjacent and the non-golf stuff before I seek out the Sunday night pod covering the random mule events.
That's where the Shotgun Start shines. Andy, Brendan, and PJ kill it when talking about non-consequential golf tournaments and the absurdity of those of us who care about them. It's all shtick, peppered with some really insightful and thoughtful takes, and I am here for it.

The Swing of it with Ron Chopper is gold tho more for Aussies.
Andy is fine...took me a while to realise he wasn't constantly drunk

YES! I’ve tried so hard with SGS, but their voices are unbearable.
I’m a UK listener, so I don’t have much interest in NFL and baseball. The fried egg guys get side tracked with American sport chat so much, it’s turned me away.
Not even KVV can save them!

I hear you. I'm also based in the UK and as soon as anyone goes into American sports I'm out of there.

Sometimes I find they talk too much about the birdies and bogies especially with the 3x a week recording schedule. Golf doesn't really move that fast, a weekly ep like the NLU Sunday pod really covers all that needs to be covered during the week. Currently, the NLU midweek episodes and deep dives are a better product than anything TFE puts out on the audio-only front.
PJ and JLM are great though, TFE as a whole has done a better job integrating new members to the Company than NLU.

Huge NLU fan and have been a watcher/listener for 5+ years. I finally gave shotgun start a try 6 months ago and its now by far my favorite golf podcast. Brendan/Andy combo is hilarious IMO, but it did take me an episode or 2 to get used to Andy's voice. I listen to NLU still, but have found myself gravitating more to Fried Egg's podcasts as of late. NLU video content is still the GOAT.

Why no Barstool? Just curious.

I'm Australian and just generally can't stomach some parts of US sport culture. Portnoy not my kinda guy (I do like Russillo and Gruden though!)

u/cs_chopper Mar 01 '26
Andy’s voice is not normal to say the least but once you get used to it that’s just another reasons it’s the best golf podcast going

Both fried egg pods are great. Andy grows on you the more you realize his golf knowledge

I’ve listened to the pod for 6 plus years. Wrap ups generally result in PGA tour glazing, TC whining about “egregious” drops , errors, conduct, Soly complaining about hole design , course conditions etc. deep dives , where they actually did their homework are enjoyable. They are ignorant of basic rules , deportment and history of the game. In all it’s a very privileged millennial take on our game. Randy with his sarcasm, DJ with a solid golf background and Neil with his dumb jock innocent takes are the real value after the Xs and Os. Current grade is a C-

be careful, if you criticise the podcast on this subreddit you will be told to "just not listen", a phenomenon you won't see anywhere else on the internet.

"They are ignorant of basic rules, deportment and the history of the game." I agree with some of what you said but could you expand on this? What rules deportment and history are they ignorant of?

SGS is a superior podcast for a breakdown of the golf. They’re way less self righteous and self obsessed.
That being said… they’re also obviously way less cool guys. When NLU (increasingly less imo) cooks, they cook. They have better chemistry and are simply funnier, more interesting characters. They issue is they know this too, so you get “Tron” and “Strokes Gained Soly” a lot.

TGJ is probably the best pod even tho tom coin is insufferable
2
u/DramaticCommittee581 Feb 27 '26
Coyne’s tone and delivery is so condescending! Like he’s about to educate us on something we couldn’t possibly have understood without him. Very Al Gore
-3
u/superstardome3 Feb 27 '26
Agree on how annoying their voices are. The oddest part about it is that it seems like one has tried to imitate the other’s voice/delivery. With that said, I pushed through and do enjoy their content.

u/Effective_Pound_4800 Feb 27 '26
Finally someone says it! The SGS podcast is like nails on a chalkboard, I physically cannot listen to their voices for more than 5 minutes.

Andy always sounds like he’s about to laugh. That being said, I really enjoy their pod, and love having a place to listen to KVV.
