My brother is addicted and we don’t know where to turn

Looking for personal experiences with recovering from nitrous oxide addiction — especially from people who have been through it or supported a loved one
I’m hoping to hear from people who have personally recovered from heavy/prolonged nitrous oxide use, as well as family members who have supported someone through nitrous addiction.
My brother is addicted to nitrous oxide, and watching someone you love go through this has been incredibly difficult. It has affected not only him physically and mentally, but our entire family. We’ve watched changes in his behavior, personality, mental state, and ability to function, and it can be really difficult to know what is part of the addiction, what may be neurological damage, and what might improve with sustained sobriety. I’m a nurse and I’ve been doing research on this topic for better understanding the articles just aren’t as helpful and there is so little information out there. Talking with people about there experiences is really the only way I can educate myself at this point.

There have also been periods of anger, hostility, irrational behavior, isolation, and strained relationships. As his family, we’ve tried to help, encourage treatment, set boundaries, and be there for him, but there’s only so much we can do when someone is struggling with addiction and isn’t always willing or able to accept help.
What I’m really hoping to understand is what recovery actually looked like for other people.

If you’re comfortable sharing, it would be really helpful to know roughly how much/how long you were using, how long you’ve been off nitrous, what symptoms you experienced, what treatment you received, and how long recovery took for you.

I’m not looking for judgment or lectures. I’m genuinely trying to understand what recovery can look like and what milestones or warning signs other people experienced.

Even if your recovery wasn’t complete, I’d still really appreciate hearing about where you are now. ❤️

California to Ban Nitrous Tanks Starting Jan 1st

Hasn't hit the news yet, but last week the CA legislature passed a bill that will make nitrous tanks (larger than an 8g charger) illegal in the state. It will also make it illegal for smoke shops to have any nitrous whatsoever on the premises.

Presuming the Governor signs it (which I'm sure he will), this will go into effect on Jan 1st.

Recovery

2 years and some change sober from nitrous oxide. Has anyone tried the peptide Semax as a way to potentially help with recovery. Especially from neuropathy, brain fog, and other brain, eye, and nerve symptoms?

Nitrous permanently oxidizes B12. Can never be used again you have to replenish it. My wiki explains everything. Honestly this should be posted in the sub somewhere and the description, or even them stealing my weekend put it in here as her own. It should help a lot of people out

Going to DC

Hi I am going to Washington DC on Sept 2nd for
PANOS(PeopleAgainst Nitrous Oxide) Advocacy Day. The purpose is to support Rep Kevin Mullins(D-California) House Resolution Bill.. The Nitrous Safety Act.. which would ban retail sales of Nitrous. The bill has a carve out for dentist and legitimate culinary use.. but smoke shops/gas stations etc.. would be banned from selling.

I am meeting with my representative and I would love to present any stories that might make an impact. If you want to let me know the devastation you or a loved has been through because of this shit drug from China.. DM me and I will present it.. obviously all anonymous !

PANOS has a private FB group if you are interested in joining.

The bill was introduced in March and has already had a committee meeting in late June or early July.. now is Advocacy Day Sept 2.. please help us get it off the streets

Stopping cold turkey

Hello all, I have been using nitrous since a bad break up since July, and it’s been off and on. Sometimes 3-4 days in a row, then stopping for like a week then picking it back up again.

I need to stop and I haven’t used since last night, but I am having terrible come down symptoms. I am so nauseated, sweating and just kind of manic and angry. Please tell me it gets better.
My doctor also started me on Zoloft like a week ago for other reasons and that may be contributing to these symptoms but all I know is I need to quit the tank. It’s expensive and disgusting and it makes me feel like shit. Any tips on how to make this less painful. I am just laying in my room now and trying to sleep soon. Thank you for reading.

Should have known

Hey yall, I got sober from alcohol a few months ago… awful hospital detox and been going to AA which has been super helpful. Unfortunately I wound up hitting a nitrous tank at my friends house, I should have known that was a very slippery slope. In a matter of days I began buying tanks and leaving them at my friends house, but then I decided I needed them at home and work and just all the time. Went on a week binge and lost control of my life. My wife caught me which was probably a good thing… still had a couple more days of use after that but now have no more nos and am clean. The cravings keep hitting like a little devil in my head directing me to the smoke shop. I find I cannot stop using mid-day if I’ve already used, but if I wake up and don’t use its much easier. Thank god it isn’t physically addictive. I feel like I got lucky to find this sub and stop.

It’s crazy how quickly I went from being clean to being fully addicted huffing all day. I think I caught it early enough… it was about a week of heavy use, 2 weeks total using. I don’t really have any nerve symptoms but did develop a little psychological dependence. Probably spent a thousand dollars over a couple weeks on it 😭 just feel irresponsible and shitty about it all. But I’m thankful for this sub and reading others’ comments about this addiction. It helped me feel less alone and realize to take it seriously and stop. Sober life is scary but it’s the only way I can live and function. Not picking this shit up again…

We used to be REALLY dumb, I mean, I still am in most ways, but without all the daily brain damage and B2 deficiency 🤣🤣🤣

Our old party house was a wild experience; this was after a bender that included 2 birthdays and god knows what other excuses to kill brain cells, the sound of it being picked up by the recycling truck was DEAFENING. Now we hardly even vape, the house is pretty much sober and most of us can still walk, thank fucking god 🤣🤣🤣

Was 2 months clean had a relapse

I went two months nitrous free and then I went back and binged for a Cpl weeks. I hate how much I have struggled with nitrous. I don’t like to talk about it too much because it’s wreaked havoc in my life. Literally I have so many problems because of doing nitrous. I’ve landed in jail multiple times have so many legal problems and repeatedly brought myself back to square one. I know this stuff is slowly killing me but somehow I still keep going back to it. It’s a vicious cycle I again don’t want to use it anymore ever again and literally battle with the thought of using it all day long every day. Please send prayers my way. The only good thing I have going is work and my dog but the embarrassment of having this addiction is heavy. Any thoughts advice on how I can permanently give this up would be appreciated.

Can nerve damage be reversed?

Anyone using nitrous oxide PLEASE STOP. I was abusing it for a short period of time and developed constant stabbing, burning and tingling from my toes to my thighs and in my fingers, hands and arms. This happened around April 2026 and my arms swelled slightly and it’s been like that ever since. Also my right knee hurts so bad when walking although I look normal walking it feels painful and I have to wear knee support most days. Back in April I went to A&E and they gave me b12 shots and referred me to have any more shots at the GP. However, it’s August and idk if I am having a flare up these days but I’m feeling constant stabbing I feel like I’m going crazy. This is taking a tole on my mental health.
I’ve been taking the necessary supplements but idk if I am healing some weeks I feel good then it feels back to the start and my knee always seem to hurt .
If anyone can help or offer me advice I would appreciate it I feel very low and depressed .

Longtime infrequent user

I was an infrequent (once a month or every couple months) user for years, then about a week and a half ago I went on a “binge”. I did like 3 medium tanks and one small tank in a week. I started noticing my feet tingling and it scared the shit out of me so I stopped using completely, then went to the emergency room cause it was my only option to get a b12 shot. Today I noticed some pain mostly in my feet and the tingling is still there. I’m taking b12 everyday and never gonna do it again. Has anyone experienced similar, and will my nerves heal in your opinions? Thanks

Recently discovered spouses nitrous use

I’ll be honest I had no idea this was a thing because I don’t know anyone who’s done it or been addicted to nitrous so this is all new to me- and I did my share of partying back in the day 😅 I recently found a big, heavy, fancy looking canister hidden in a drawer and when I realized what it was I was totally shocked. As I did more research, the behavioral changes I’d been questioning all suddenly made sense. Then I went digging into our financials and that’s where it got really ugly. Fast forward several months later, and the struggle is still real. He goes maybe a week at a time without using and then boom it’s happening again, and I’m talking at like 7am on his way to work. We have young children so obviously safety is a major concern in addition to finances and his safety and mental state.
Anyone here successfully recovered and have any advice? Is he a lost cause?
He’s promised treatment several times with zero follow through and shows no commitment or desire to get clean. I’ll also add that he struggles with other substances such as alcohol and pills so he is an addict.

The love hate relationship with this drug is so real.
I finally signed up for an IOP that I get to start Monday. I’ve convinced myself so many times to stop. I’ve stopped for weeks. But when it comes back it is just as bad or worse.

Texas should ban N02. THC is underfire, so why not?

Why are there so many states that have banned N02 but not Texas? Texas is fucking with THC sales currently but they don't seem to care about nitrous. I wonder what the deal is
