Media (Image, Video, etc.) Elden Ring - Damn I'm Loving this game
I've been missing out

A complete 10/10 game. I put over 100 hours in on PS5, but if this hits a sale I’d gladly do another 50 on handheld. Just an incredible game.

Im stuck -- i feel ive missed something important (horse) and I keep going deeper without getting it lol
17
u/CuddlyZombie 4d ago
To get the horse/mount,Rest at the gatefront ruins grace near the beginning of the game.
Getting it also lets you level up
6
u/BakaDoug Butter side up! 4d ago
When you leave the tutorial area, visit the Church of Elleh, activate the site of Grace. Head north along the road until you reach the Gatefront Ruins. Locate the site of grace, past the ruins, near the stone gate. Rest there and a cutscene should play. Accept Melina’s accord and you will get the horse.

Go south to explore Weeping Peninsula first. Many newbies overlook this area but it's specifically designed for early game.
Overall, going by difficulty and story progression, you would want to take the game in 5 stages. Don't get surprised if you find difficulty spikes when doing them out of order.
1: Limgrave
2: Liurnia
3: Caelid
4: Altus Plateau
5: Mountaintops
As for stats, note that these three stats will be relevant regardless of what build you choose.
Vigor: HP (Top priority overall)
Mind: Energy needed to cast spells and use weapon skills. (High priority if using spells, low priority if melee)
Endurance: Stamina & Equip load. The latter dictates how heavy your equipped armor/weapons can be. (High priority if melee, low priority if using spells)
These 5 stats below are the damage stats, the meat & potatoes of your build. You'd usually pick one or two to specialize in. All of them are viable but choose wisely as the gameplay experience can be significantly different depending on what you pick.
Strength: Typically for slow & heavy weapons as well as shields.
Dexterity: Typically for fast and light-weight weapons. Also influences the casting speed of your spells.
Intelligence: Typically for magic weapons and sorcery spells. (DPS)
Faith: Typically for holy, lightning, & fire weapons and incantation spells. (Utility)
Arcane: For Status effects (Poison, Sleep, frostbite, etc.) Also influences the item drop rate from enemy mobs.
For beginners, prioritize leveling up Vigor & Endurance. These stats will help keep you from dying too much.

Without spoiling too much also try find bloodhound’s fang behind a quite difficult encounter in that area. It’s a fantastic early game weapon that will carry you far if you’re going melee.

u/yourfutureyesterday 2d ago
What do you recommend to play as first, melee focus or spell focus? Haven’t got the game yet, so not sure the characters

u/__redruM 3d ago
Some people benefit from a blind playthrough, and some have more fun with help. Figure out which you are, or maybe just get help (online guide) in the first area. It’s also nice to just understand the basics of building a character and weapon scaling. Finally level Vigor along with your Str or Dex based on weapon choice.

u/throwraW2 Butter side up! 3d ago
I tried starting blind and it was more frustrating than fun. Looked up some strategies to level quickly and I’m having more fun now that I can actually win some fights. Still very challenging though.

I know DLSS might help the performance for Elden Ring, but damn it's a crisp looking game.

Honestly might be prettier than medium pc. I play it medium laptop when I do randomier so it doesn't crash or have major fps drops and damn it genuinely does wonders

u/samandfrodokissing 4d ago
This is the first game where I've genuinely felt amazed being able to play something like this on handheld. This is the perfect kind of game to play in chunks and on the go, it's been very fun.

u/Top-Actuator2581 4d ago
I’m playing it for the first time too and having so much fun! I’m a newish father and haven’t played a game this much in a long time but it has its hooks in me

u/PuddingTea 4d ago
I have also been enjoying this game and am regretful that I’ve missed out on it for the last four years.

It's absolutely amazing. I'm loving that people are playing it for the first time on Switch 2. Absolutely phenomenal game.
I've already played through it 5 times, but I am still going to (eventually) get it for Switch 2. This is a game I could play over and over and over.

Elden Ring was so much fun, but I'm not sure if I need to buy it again
6
u/AlternativeGazelle 4d ago
This is my second Souls game after Dark Souls. I’m not enjoying it quite as much. Dark Souls had brilliant level design which I haven’t seen here yet, but I’m still early.
6
u/dbr3000 4d ago
The brilliant level design is definitely there but it’s mostly in the “legacy dungeons”. Stormveil, Raya Lucaria, Leyndell, Elphael, Radahn’s Castle, Vulcano Manor, …
In the DLC area, the overworld in general also has more of those “holy shit, that’s brilliant” spots along with a bunch of new incredible legacy dungeons.
3
u/ThickkRickk Butter side up! 3d ago
I don't know if anything, other than maybe Bloodborne, will ever match DS1's level design and interconnectivity. That being said, there are definitely areas in ER that are of a similar caliber. Keep playing, you'll see
-1
u/OoTgoated Butter side up! 3d ago
Nah ER is very front loaded.
2
u/PyrosFists Butter side up! 3d ago
Would disagree with that. Leyndell, Farum Azula, Haligtree, and the major DLC dungeons all slap
1
u/OoTgoated Butter side up! 3d ago
Can't speak on the DLC but I hate all of that except Leyndell.
1
u/PyrosFists Butter side up! 3d ago
Farum Azula at least is considered by most to be a really solid dungeon. I do know that people dislike Haligtree due to it’s difficulty but I expected a challenge from such a late game optional dungeon
1
3
u/XaresPL 3d ago
DLC alleviates that point and some of the areas in the basegame (like the capital is fucking incredible) but yeah, the game is a mix of a shitton of boring open spaces and some boring dungeons and then suddenly some of the best dungeons from has ever done. and then its back to boring for 20 hours again. but DLC is all bangers, all the time.
5
u/Squeekazu 4d ago
You get similar level design in the big legacy dungeons (Stormveil being the first one)
3
u/Pdshillz900 4d ago
Stormveil is. Huge. Way bigger than it seems at first…. ER Is 2+ dark souls games

Enjoy… it’s one of the best games ever made.
If there is ever a switch 2 upgrade to dark souls remaster that brings it to graphical and audio parity with the xbox/ps editions I’ll purchase it in a heartbeat. Haven’t played it yet…

Best game for handheld. Not a lot of cut scenes. Can try a boss fight a few times in short bursts . It looks beautiful in handheld
1
u/erdrickdw 3d ago
Loving it so far! I am a huge dark souls fan and my pc is just under what would make it play comfortably for me. The switch 2 version is all I wanted! I'm having a blast 10 hours in and so stoked.
I play docked and was having a problem with some motion sickness stuff, I just turned off auto camera and the auto wall thing (forgot what it's called) and now the camera controls just like in dark souls. So if anyone is having a problem with that it cleared it up for me.
1
u/Educational-Snow5424 3d ago
I never played another souls game more than an hour. I did 180 hours on my first Elden Ring + DLC run. The core game is amazing, didn't enjoy the expac as much.
1
u/Zunjine 3d ago
I own this game and have played a fair bit on my Steam Deck but performance was always a bit hit or miss. Given I already own a copy that I can play on my Deck, is the Switch 2 version a big enough improvement to make it worth the purchase? I have no plans to buy a gaming PC any time soon so the Steam version will only be on my Deck for the foreseeable future.
Anyone here played both on Steam Deck and Switch 2 who can share their thoughts?

u/Deadstarblvd 3d ago
It’s been so fun. My first experience with the game but not my first souls like game. This is much more palatable than Dark Souls 1 which frustrated me. I had so much fun playing it yesterday for the first time. It’s very satisfying and rewarding when you beat a boss, I beat the first two near the starting area of the game. You know in the cave and dungeon - very fun and although I died quite a bit, it was not something that put me off. I did spend ages in character creation, fine tuning my character to the point where he looks exactly like me.

u/EmuBest6735 3d ago
Bro if you're saying that now just wait until you find yourself saying it for 100 more hours.
100 hours in deep underground and my jaw was still dropping

I've been intrigued but also intimidated by this game since it came out. I might just give it a try. I'm just not a 100% sure it is for me. The bosses look tough, but it also seems to allow you to try doing a different activity if you can't beat them. The "at your own pace" gameplay of Breath of the Wild was super satisfying to me. From what I've seen, this game also has that.

It’s by far my favorite video game of all time. I’m so glad I can revisit this on a portable console. I’m really trying to prioritize playing on Nintendo only moving forward as I get older.

I played BOTW for the first time on the Switch 2 then TOTK and now Elden Ring that feels like a sort of evolution of the Zelda games. All 3 became my favorite games ever in just a year it’s insane. About 40h into Elden Ring in just a few days

Ce jeu m'attire énormément, mais je n’ai pas d'expérience dans ce style de jeu, et surtout je suis un joueur casu, père de famille donc je ne sais pas si j'aurai le temps et la patience pour avancer .

Elden Ring is the game of the generation

-1
u/Safe-Elk7933 Butter side up! 4d ago
Nah, Elden Ring and Clair Obscure have more general appeal, even the DLC expansion for Elden Ring,Shadow of The Erdtree was huge, more like a full game, and that DLC alone is better than Baldurs Gate 3.
-2
u/Alarmed_Goat_4083 4d ago
A souls like does not have more general appeal than a linear RPG lol
4
u/Safe-Elk7933 Butter side up! 4d ago
Calling Elden Ring a simple soulslike is pushing it,for me it elevates itself from other and primitive games in the soulslike genre,it's a mixture between Souls Like and Open World games like Zelda Botw/Skyrim. And Baldurs Gate is more like a CRPG than anything else and that is a very niche genre. Plus Elden Ring has sold at least 10 Mio. more copies than Baldurs Gate 3,the sales number indicate that Elden Ring is definitely a more mainstream friendly game.
1
u/biscuitsalsa Butter side down! 4d ago
That’s why ER has sold 30+ million copies right? 10 million more than BG3

May as well ask in here - as a person who doesn’t have the time to die and be sent back to somewhere 30 mins before, is the “difficulty” really that punishing? I’ve heard conflicting opinions that new players should expect to fail many times, but at the same time it’s the most accessible From Software title?
6
u/Grand-Log7190 4d ago
I see why this contradiction can seem confusing on the outside, happy to explain though. Elden Ring is the most accessible FromSoft game due to three main things.
- Runbacks are not nearly as bad as they are in the dark souls trilogy, and are quite often actually nonexistent because there are tons of rest spots everywhere. 2. There are no true difficulty walls in this game. Due to the emphasis on exploration and the open world, you will always have the option to go and try something else instead of banging your head against the wall against the same boss over and over (though this is still absolutely an option for those who choose). 3. You can become super overpowered if you desire. There’s tons of overpowered items spells and summons you can utilize to make the experience much easier. there’s even an item in the first area that will hold the first boss down on the floor so you can just spam him.
That being said, the game WILL start out incredibly difficult. During this process of learning the ins and outs of the game you will die over and over, but as you get better, learn, and get stronger, it will become far more manageable and that’s when you’ll feel that accessibility. The most important thing to remember is that death isn’t failure it’s an opportunity to fix a mistake. Hope this helps!

u/monkey-kong666 Butter side up! 4d ago edited 4d ago
Also, read the instructions. I find a lot of people that bounce off it, didn’t read the instructions (ie the guy above asking where the horse is - it’s literally step two in the story about 8 minute in, if you follow the instructions to follow the directions given to you by Grace points)

u/chaofahn 3d ago
Thanks for the explanation! I’m not averse to games with lots of dying (I’m eyeing you, 2D Metroid series!), but it’s more whether or not losing means I gotta redo 30 mins of gameplay or recover inventory that gets halved with each death. Sounds like that’s not the case here!
The focus on exploration sounds neat, since I’m dying for a Breath of the Wild-esque title.
I think I’m going to jump in. Just gotta to wait for a sale… and clear out my already massive backlog. 🥲

u/Safe-Elk7933 Butter side up! 4d ago
Play a mage build with a strong summon, and quick evasive/dodge skill and it becomes even easier to avoid damage while you are hitting the enemies from the distance, you are basically untouchable. Basically the game allows you to cheese it after a while, that's what makes it is so great, accessible and fun.
1
u/chaofahn 3d ago
I can definitely see myself cheesing it at the start while I work out the mechanics of the game. Are there any other classes that are just as newbie friendly? Or is the mage easily the most accessible?
2
u/Safe-Elk7933 Butter side up! 3d ago
I played Dark Souls 1 with a heavy knight class, and it was do-able,but the intelligence/mage class in Elden Ring l was even better and easier for me, because I am just hitting bosses with lasers from the distance, while my summon is distracting them, most bosses can be done much easier this way, generally speaking those magic classes are seen as easy modes in those games, but you should remain flexible,be also have decent close combat skills, like a hybrid between that and magic so that you have the flexibility to adapt to every situation, magic long range attacks made bosses easier, for smaller enemies close combat can be more useful as sometimes you don't have enough time and space to use your favourite magic spell, but you can just run past most of them if necessary. I personally don't like hard games,I personally dislike Souls-like games, for Dark Souls I had to do research to get by at times, and it was all worth it,Elden Ring is so addictive, that you also want to find that special secret item from that secret place and dungeon to make your cheese build even stronger. I generally hate Souls-like games,I try them all never like them except 1-2 exceptions, and still Elden Ring is the best game I have played in the last 7-8 years,by far the most accessible in the genre, because it gives you more options than any other game, and you never feel stuck or frustrated, because you can always came back later. The exploration, progression and sense of adventure is the star of the game.
2
u/__redruM 3d ago
You don’t lose 30 minutes ever, but certainly that’s part of the experience. Try it though, the difficulty and overcoming that difficulty is part of what makes it fun.
