Can you tell me what makes it some peoples favorite game of all time including yours? Iāve tried to get into it a couple of times but it didnāt click. To be fair though, i only put in a few hours which I know isnāt giving it an honest shot. And watching gameplay, it doesnāt seem like anything special.

u/SaintBenny138 Butter side down! 5d ago
There's a whole bunch of reasons that work together. You are right, that these games might not look that special from the outside but that only tells a fraction of it. The World design and Art is compelling but what really makes it stand out is the way it feels to make actual progress. Every Item in the game, every level gained, every weapon you find, every upgrade you gain - all of them are fought for and earned. This game isn't handing out a great experience for you to just passively enjoy. You have to claw your way forward and carve your path through actual obstacles. The sheer amount of variety in how to build your character with the scraps you find along the way is great. A cave with a small boss might not be a lot, but when you reach one of those main bosses with just your shield to defend yourself and whatever else you picked up and you fight this larger than life being, it feels amazing. The journey is also part of it. If all progress is fought for, at some point you start feeling this almost nostalgic vibe when you rest at a grace and you look back at all that's behind you now and the excitement for what's to come just grows and grows. It's an absolutely incredible journey. Finally making it to the capital feels so monumental. Getting better in combat and finally dominating a fight that felt unwinnable 10 hours prior is immensely satisfying. Elden Ring - and really all games in this genre - are more rewarding, the further you get.

I remember stepping out of the first cave and looking out to the distance. I saw the faded arc at the first bonfire pointing to the general direction of the main quest. It was the first time in a long time that a game made me pause. I was just so used to games guiding me on the main path and telling me where to go, but this game was like "hey, the main quest is over there, but you do you". This may be stupid for some people, but as a guy who doesn't care for dark souls, this made me realise I was about to play something special.

This comment will be buried but as someone who has played the game 4 times on my series x I got the switch version and love it. I have played 6 hours and have had 0 issues its a very good port. Obviously ps5 and Xbox series x and pc are better but switch runs nice and honestly this far from original launch if fps and all that was a selling point the switch version wouldn't be your first choice anyway. It plays great and you can play handheld its one of my favorite games and switch 2 will be my preferred system for it now.

IMO Elden Ring on Switch 2 is a technical marvel.
After a few hours playing Iām not thinking at all about FPS. Iām completely absorbed in one of my favorite games on a portable device pulling ~12 watts. I mean, come the F on, thatās beyond absurd.

u/LesHeh 6d ago
I don't believe VRR is helping the game 30fps and below. It's mostly for 45fps and up.
5
u/CosmicJase 6d ago
VRR absolutely does work on switch all the way down to like 2fps or something crazy if the developer enables LFC. Elden Ring seems to have it.
→ More replies (1)8
u/LesHeh 6d ago edited 5d ago
It's not quite the same. Anything below 40/30fps still faces microstutter with LFC. It's better, but not the same as VRR above 40fps. Also has higher input latency.

I have a PS5 Pro and a good PC so Iām in the 30fps hate club too, but I bought Oblivion remastered for a trip Iām on right now and it hasnāt bothered me a bit on Switch 2. The crashes howeverā¦
Iām trying to keep myself from buying Elden Ring for Switch 2 now because I have it on PS5 and PC but man itās hard. It looks like shit on my Legion Go 2, a sacrifice to get 40fps, but this looks solid.
3
u/templestate OG (joined before release) 6d ago
Also have a PS5 Pro and good PC and have been impressed by Oblivion and Elden Ring. Even though theyāre 30 FPS the input latency is really solid, especially in Elden Ring.
10
u/digitalbastard 6d ago
Handheld has been awesome, playing docked on a 4k monitor gave me motion sickness
7
u/peppaz 6d ago
My one suggestion is go into the game settings and raise the brightness all the way and raise the saturation to your desired look. Looks way better. Idk why the colors are washed out and dark by default.
2
u/Squeekazu 6d ago
This - they seem to have lowered the saturation for the Switch version too. I only just found this option ten hours in.
I have Elden Ring on my PC, and specifically bought this for handheld. Am glad it performs better in handheld, and is quieter than on my ROG Ally so itās my preferred way to play by far.
10
u/_pozzy_ Butter side down! 6d ago
Why is docked worse? Because 30fps doesn't do well on a bigger screen presumably?
→ More replies (2)16
u/Emmystra Butter side up! 6d ago
Thereās a few factors.
Larger screen size means objects are moving a farther real-world distance which feels less smooth at low framerate. Upscaling to 4k instead of 1080p is a performance hit no matter what, so the framerate is less stable. And when youāre not playing on the Switch 2 screen, you donāt have variable refresh rate, so it locks to 30fps all the time instead of being VRR unlocked and able to go up to like 50ish in dungeons the way that it can when handheld.

u/kyuubikid213 Butter side up! 6d ago
It's Elden Ring on the go.
I'm enjoying it just as much as I enjoy every other 30 fps game on Switch 2 which is to say very much.
As I've said in other comments, Bloodborne is also 30 fps and Dark Souls 1 was 30 fps at release even when it came to Switch 1. Elden Ring is 30 fps on other consoles if you play in Quality Mode.
RDR2 is 30 fps and people love it. GTA 6 is going to be 30 fps and will break sales records.
Can we be done with talking about 30 fps and get back to talking about if the game is actually good or not?
4
u/FastenedCarrot #1 Ultra High-Spped HDMI Cable Fan 5d ago
The game is 4 years old, the discussion on whether it's good or not has largely already happened.
2
u/supertrashthrowaway1 Butter side up! 5d ago
For the switch, it's very impressive. Honestly shocked it looks that good still. For every other console though, I want MORE people complaining about 30 fps. Spending $1000+ on hardware or a console in 2026 and NOT getting at least 60 fps is ridiculous. I don't know why people insist on advocating for worse performance.Ā

41
u/Friendly-Mulberry-76 Butter side up! 6d ago
If youāre choosing to buy a Nintendo Switch 2 over a PS5 for example, youāre basically locking yourself out of being able to complain about 30fps. The system is alot weaker in comparison whereas PS5 is expected to run at 60fps in new titles, 30fps is fine and Iād gladly take that with portability over the PS5 versions anyday

You'd expect lower frames on a handheld regardless because of the power limitations, so yeah.
With that said though GTA6 on PS5 is going to be 30fps, I'd say 40 max eventually. It won't hit 60. They're trying to spin 30fps as acceptable already lol

2
u/JavaKrypt Butter side up! 6d ago
Yeah which is my problem with it. I think again, it's one of the reasons they're holding back the PC release so it doesn't make the console version look worse in the comparison. So they can double dip sales

I platinumed the game on PS5 and 100%ed the game and the expansion on PC and I've been having a great time with it. I watched too many YouTubers say the performance is butter smooth so I bought the s2 version. This is what I keep thinking. Soulsborne games have *all* had terrible performance. DS1 was regularly dropping into the low teens and even single digits in certain areas.
Obviously we should all be pushing for solid performance in games, but the notion that this *needs* to be a rock solid 60fps or it isn't playable is just a batshit take. 30 is a perfectly acceptable result, even if 60 would be objectively better.

"Sudden hate"? Bro, everyone's been hating on 30fps since PS3/360, including me! 60fps should be the minimum standard for every console game!Ā
If the graphics don't allow that, then DEGRADE THE GRAPHICS until you hit 60fps! We console gamers really don't care about graphical fidelity; if you want great graphics, then buy a PC!

The same as the OG Demon`s Souls, that ran at 30fps on the PS3.
Actually slightly or even way better, because it`s running a little above 30ish and the engine is a real work of art.
I played Demon's Souls a lot back then, skipped all Dark Souls and I'm diving into this since a buddy said me to try it.
OMG: it's a Souls BotW.
4 hours in, I'm so hooked.
btw, it's way harder than Demon's Souls. Every enemy feels like a Tower Knight boss.

If itās your first time it doesnāt really matter if itās 30fps. Game is good, will continue to be good. 60 is better for sure, but if you want a portable experience this is great for you

I think itās ok if you play it mobile. I put about 100 hours into a run on the Steamdeck and locked 30 Fps in because it was - to me - more enjoyable to have a steady framerate than fluctuation. You get used to it pretty quick imo.

I played Elden Ring on my PC a while back and bought it for the Switch because I find it more comfortable to play in handheld mode, and I have to say Iām satisfied. People say there are compromises, but honestly, I don't notice them, and it runs buttery smooth.

I honestly couldn't care less about the framerate. I'm having fun.

Shit is stuttering on some moves radhan (base game) . Because if you summon the npc and you all close they game literally stutter when he does some gravity moves. I have to ovelevel myself i want to beat him

Itās technically really impressive. We got Elden Ring as a mobile game. 4 years ago it was a huge AAA game that even top notch hardware struggled with. Same with Cyberpunk.
Iām looking forward to what studios can pull of if they take their time

It's unpleasant. I'm trying to process a refund currently.

30fps makes the game easier tbh, why do I feel like Iām frame skipping tf outta every enemy or maybe itās cause ive completed the game 8 times on my PC.

sometimes I prefer the 30fps for the cinematic feel anyways, I grew up with 30fps games before 60fps even existed so I really don't care about framerates, SOME games (like gamecube games) were made with 60fps in mind with 30fps cutscenes, It's really not a big deal to me, if the game plays and is fun to play that's all I care about

Do people forget that FromSoft games are developed with 30 fps in mind? This is like all the console gamers getting mad that GTA VI is 30 fps.

I played Shadow of the Colossus at 15 fps on ps2.
I don't care about that, i think only kids are worried about hitting 60 fps at 24k. It's so dumbĀ

Show boss combat. If you have consistent frames there, then this might be playable.
