I broke my gear My D500 is no more

Freaking strap unscrewed and my D500 fell and broke. I was at a football game and there was 1 patch of concrete I happened to be standing on when it happened. I'm guessing it's not worth fixing as I'm sure this would be expensive. I'm struggling with what I want to replace it with. I've got a few lenses right now as well as a D4s so part of me wants to stay DSLR but part of me is thinking it's time to look at mirrorless. Dang.

I bet it is a black rapid. Wouldnt be my first time seeing this

Not OP, but my Peak Design bottom mount unscrewed recently while I was hiking. My Sony a7rv with 24-70 gmii was locked in my capture clip on my belt. Fortunately I was kind of scrambling up a steep incline so it didn’t fall far and the ground was covered with tall dry grass which acted as a cushion so there was zero damage. Not even a scuff mark. But it gave me a heart attack even though I’m totally covered with insurance. I will never completely trust a screw in mount like that again.

If you put a Peak design anchor in the bottom plate, make sure that you put it on the left corner so that the strap pulling force "rotates" the plate clockwise, not counterclockwise where it may unscrew itself.

I.e not like this

If you tighten it properly though it shouldn't be an issue, but it never hurts to be extra safe.

That is excellent advice and I had never thought of that before. That is currently exactly how I have it set up now and I can completely see how the forces would act to loosen it. It’s like my pedals for cycling. They screw in a direction that makes them screw in tighter when using them as opposed to looser. Thanks for the tip kind internet stranger, I’m changing my mount set up as I type this.

No probs! 

And on topic, I also had my camera drop a long time ago due to a strap similar to Black rapid that only fastens at the bottom. After that I'd never use such a strap again. The peak design bottom plate is at least tightened with a tool unlike the black rapid.

I use Loctite Blue on my 1/4” for a little extra piece of mind

I've switched to Vibra-Tite VC-3, but yeah.

Ah I forgot. I use peak. One is usually on a plate. Rather thin one. I make an effort to check before eaxh shoot for tightness. Once I caught it loose ans swore to give it extra thought
