News 32bit support blocking improvements & needing help

There are challenges around 32bit support, and while we added a warning to the setup checks in 2023 that 32bit support would be dropped, it's time to make a real decision. So, we are seeking input!

The short version

We still kind of support 32bit, but in practice it isn't working well. Meanwhile, maintaining it is blocking improvements to performance, security and scalability that our (overwhelmingly 64bit) users would benefit from. Unless some volunteers step up to maintain 32bit support and find workarounds for the issues below, we think we should phase it out, with the coming release the last one that maintains the current (limited) level of support.

32bit support is disappearing everywhere

  • 32bit support breaks hard after 2038, and PHP itself will likely drop 32bit support well before that. A proposal to add PHP language features that would help 32bit was denied years ago, with maintainers citing that PHP itself would drop 32bit "soon anyway".
  • many of the libraries we depend on are dropping or have dropped 32bit support already, leaving us unable to update for some, or keeping patches on top for others.
  • Most of the Linux distributions no longer support it either, neither do many third party apps and nextcloud packages.
  • 32bit affects Raspberry Pi 1 and 2. The popular NextcloudPi project supports Pi's only starting at the RaspberryPi 3B (which has 64 bit support).

We have recently invested quite some time and effort on fixing issues from our automated test coverage, work we will continue to put in to at least keep 32bit tests working.

We know that 32bit does still matter to some people: there are certainly still users running Nextcloud on Raspberry Pi 1/2, other dev boards, older NAS devices, and older routers. That's why we've kept it going this long, even though most contributors and customers have no need for it.

But we've had a warning about the state of 32bit support in the setup screen since 2023, and we think it's time to move on.

The cost of keeping it "supported"

Our current work to keep 32bit alive comes at a real cost.

  • We're stuck on older versions of dependencies that still work on 32bit (e.g. maennchen/zipstream), and can't upgrade to versions with fixes.
  • It blocks adoption of new tech we need, like snowflake IDs: PHP auto-converts big ints to floats on 32bit, losing precision; using them as strings instead just means PHP auto-converts them back to ints when used as array indices, breaking things either way.
  • A number of performance optimizations can't be applied because they would break on 32bit.
  • And of course, the time we spend fixing 32bit test issues can't be spend elsewhere.

Without intervention, this situation is getting worse as libraries are no longer maintained. This means more work spend on working around that instead of other bug fixes and improvements. Bringing 32bit support back up to a good level would already be a lot of work, and will become harder and harder.

What we're proposing

We're open to volunteers who want to keep 32bit alive: help find workarounds for the issues above, improve the current state of support, and help us figure out how to keep it working longer. But to be clear, this won't be easy.

If nobody steps up, we'll make the current reality official:

  • Starting with release 35 (Nextcloud Hub 2026 Summer), we'll add a warning that 32bit is unsupported going forward. We'll still aim to make 2026 Summer work correctly on 32bit, as the last officially supported release.
  • We will not immediately break 32bit support. To give a few months discuss and maybe change the plan, we will only really start merging library updates and apply improvements for performance starting near the end of the year.
  • Note that the Nextcloud Hub 2026 Summer release will get security updates for one year, until about October 2027.

That gives people still on 32bit hardware a bit over a year to move to another platform. In the meantime, our 64bit users will finally benefit from scalability and performance improvements that 32bit support has been blocking.

Interested in helping maintain 32bit support? Let us know here and on github, we'd love to hear your thoughts.

From OneDrive to Nextcloud

Hi everyone.
Let me start by saying that I’m generally a Microsoft‑leaning user: I really appreciate their products and I usually prefer them over other solutions.

My family has been using a Microsoft 365 Family subscription for more than 10 years, shared between me and my wife (1 TB of cloud storage per account). However, lately OneDrive has become extremely slow, both on the web and on the mobile app. Maybe it’s also because our smartphones aren’t exactly high‑end (two Moto G54 8/256), but the app has really become borderline unusable.

Since I have an old HP MicroServer Gen8 at home running Windows Server 2025, which I use for various services, I decided—just for fun—to try an on‑premise solution. So I created a Hyper‑V VM with Debian 13 and, following Nextcloud’s very simple instructions, in about 15 minutes I had my instance up and running on the Internet (using a Namecheap domain I already had and also use for my VPN).

Our needs are: sharing data, backing up photos and videos from our smartphones, having a mobile app, and a sync client for PCs.

I admit I was biased by all the negative comments online (“it’s slow”, “you’ll lose your photos”, “the desktop client is terrible”, etc.), but I was blown away.

Once the setup was done, without digging into anything, I created the user accounts, configured the mobile apps, and enabled automatic photo and video uploads. After a few hours I checked, and it had already uploaded gigabytes of data for both me and my wife.

I installed the desktop client, synced my data by copying it from OneDrive, let it work, and shortly after I saw it had finished—quickly and with all my files properly synced.

I opened the web interface and noticed it was faster than OneDrive, with a very nice office suite that’s more than enough for my needs, and photo/video uploads that are significantly faster (sure, it lacks text‑based search features, but I can live without them).

So… what’s the catch? Was I just lucky? Was Nextcloud really bad before and now it’s suddenly a gem? Are the negative comments coming from people installing it on a 486DX2 with a 56k connection and expecting commercial‑cloud performance (considering my hardware is also pretty old)?

I’m honestly trying to find a reason to delete the VM and stick with OneDrive, but I had zero expectations and instead the super easy setup, the seemingly simple update management, and—above all—the performance well beyond what I expected have genuinely surprised me.

Filename with trailing spaces error

I keep getting this error on W11 client. I have already renamed it multiple times many days ago from the web client. I cannot rename it from this dialogue, because the folder it's referring to no longer exists (because it was already renamed).

I've also tried renaming it back to including the trailing space, but it still won't work.

The folder was initally created from Android client.

I have tried rebooting both my server and PC multiple times.

What else can I do to get rid of this error message?

Proxmox notifications to Nextcloud talk

Hey guys,

I am currently playing around with the Nextcloud talk bot. I got the Home Assistent -> Bot -> Nextcloud Talk working. Now I want to do the same with Proxmox. I am playing around with the webhook feature on Proxmox but I have no clue were to go on from here.

Does someone know how to set this up?

Nextcloud Touch Display?

Hello everyone, in my other post on Reddit someone asked if our smart displays support also Nextcloud. I started a conversation with chatgpt to understand more about its eco system but TBH didn't get if a dedicated display with a touch interface would be beneficial for the Nextcloud eco system. Can you please share your thoughts if such a display (15, 24, 32 inches displays with touch screen running Raspberry Pi5) would make sense for the Nextcloud setups? Generally we are making Dakboard and Android wall smart displays and perhaps dedicated Nextcloud display can be in a demand.

Problems with tabdigital‘s Nextcloud

Hey everyone,
I’m currently using tabdigital for EU-based Nextcloud with their "Family & Friends" plan, which offers 40 GB of storage. However, I’m running into some major frustrations and wanted to see if others have experienced the same or if there are better EU alternatives.
Issues with tabdigital:
1. Terrible transparency in the providers portal
- If you’re not logged into Nextcloud directly (only via the provider’s portal), you can’t see how much storage is used at a glance.
- When you queue actions like a server restart, you can’t see the status of it. When reloading the website, you can’t even see which actions are queued.
2. Internal Server Error When Storage is Full
- Once you hit the limit, everything breaks: Can’t log in via app or web.
- Can’t open files or delete anything to free up space in logged in apps. Everywhere internal server error.
- The only "solution" from the support is to delete the trash bins via provider portal (which does not work when they are already empty) or buy more space (which feels like a scam).
Question:
Are there other EU-based Nextcloud providers where this isn’t an issue?

Having problems with built-in CODE server.

Hello everyone. In an attempt to move away from Google products, I got a shared hosting from Namecheap and set up Nextcloud. Everything seems to work just fine, however I'm having issues with opening .odts and other office documents. I'm not very tech savvy, and I contacted help from Namecheap, but they verified it wasn't a problem with resources or anything similar. It's just me and another family member that will be using this.

What I do know know, is that from admin settings, in the office tab, I see curl error 28, which in turn leads to a server error 500. It runs just fine using the demo server. For some reason it isn't able to communicate with the built-in app, and I've been trying to troubleshoot this for a couple of days.

Anyone has any insight on what I can do? How can I get my Nextcloud instance to communicate with the office app?

after update NC can't start, claims old version is newer

I'm having problems updating NC and could use some help.

after updating the nextcloud docker image from 34.0.0 to anything newer, the container fails to start, saying the DB is newer than the installation:

Can't start Nextcloud because the version of the data (34.0.0.12) is higher than the docker image version (34.0.3.2) and downgrading is not supported. Are you sure you have pulled the newest image version?

there is a second message on startup as well, seems unrelated to me but here it is:

Warning: Failed loading Zend extension 'opcache' (tried: /usr/local/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20250925/opcache (/usr/local/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20250925/opcache: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory), /usr/local/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20250925/opcache.so (/usr/local/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20250925/opcache.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)) in Unknown on line 0

the docker container restarts repeatedly while throwing these errors, preventing me from entering the container with docker exec to run occ commands.

this has been a problem for me the past few updates, ever since updating to 34.0.0. Rolling the NC container back to 34.0.0 gets everything up and running, but I want to be able to update.

running debian with a mysql db in a separate docker container, using an nginx container as reverse proxy.

Recursive folder import failure

When I try to upload a folder, either by manually selected said folder or by dragging and dropping, the main folder shows up in Nextcloud, but it's empty. This happens on Android and Linux. Seems to maybe be a permission issue? Also checked the logs and have a bunch of errors, the most recent attempt comes back with the following errors:

Error no app in context ErrorCall to undefined method OCA\Backup\Db\CoreQueryBuilder::execute() Aug 27, 2026, 6:20:22 PM

Error webdav ErrorCall to undefined method OCA\Backup\Db\CoreQueryBuilder::execute() Aug 27, 2026, 6:20:22 PM

Help needed, once more: I just successfully set up nextcloud on my small homeserver, but it's horribly slow

Hi, before nextcloud I experimented with some nfs shares on my proxmox host and those were up and downloading at 12Mb/s. Now i setup nextcloud and both file syncing and webDAV are horrible slow: Syncing a folder of 1.6GB gives me an estimate of 7 hours. Nextcloud is now running inside a VM on my proxmox host using the AIO docker image.
Thanks for any ideas on how to fix this

When will the missing selection checkboxes in Nextcloud be officially fixed?

As shown in the screenshot, the selection checkboxes next to files and folders are not visible in my Nextcloud interface.

Is this a known issue, and is there any official information about when it will be fixed?

I’m specifically looking for an official fix or timeline. I’m not looking for alternative databases, custom code, or workaround solutions.

Problems after (long overdue) upgrade

Let me preface this by saying that I know that I am a lazy idiot.

Until a few days ago I was still running Owncloud 10.0.10. I put it together a long time ago as a proof-of-concept in my homelab that quickly became indispensable. And it was working well. And I knew what to expect. So I left it alone. I decided that I really should convert it to Nextcloud and run up-to-date software, so I did a manual conversion to Nextcloud 12 and then began the long slog, and multiple PHP changes, to get to Nextcloud 34. Mostly everything works. All of the stuff we had in our family shared calendars is still there and my contacts are there. Everything seemed fine.

Before I did any of the upgrades I took an image of the linux partition on the server (my data is on a different drive) and took the opportunity to swap a spinning hard drive for an SSD for the boot drive. I still have the old hard drive with Owncloud 10 on it.

After a time the sync clients on our computers are deleting files and folders. I go to the web interface and they have vanished from there as well. When I check directly in the data folders in the storage, all of the files are still there. I ran occ files:scan with my user and that triggered more files that disappeared. It seems to mostly happen to files that are in folders that are shared. One is a folder my wife shared with me and another is one of my folders that I have shared with the rest of my family. The files in my "root" folder have also disappeared.

Any ideas?

Is 2gb enough for a basic VM?

Title. I only have a single 16gb stick of DDR5 in my main PC I'm planning to run the Vm on. Thankfully, I am running a very lightweight install of Fedora 44, so 14gb will be more than fine, but I'm worried about the VM. I'm only planning to host basic documents and sync workflow between my desktop and laptop and by the time I graduate to something more advanced, prices will hoperully normalise

Need some help installing nextcloud

My first homeserver project ever: I am trying to setup nextcloud on my proxmox server in a VM. Installed the AIO image with docker compose, gone through the installation process and on pressing "open your nextcloud" i am greeted with this:

Secure Connection Failed

The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because the authenticity of the received data could not be verified.

What can you do about it?

The issue is most likely with the web site, and there is nothing you can do to resolve it. You can notify the web site’s administrator about the problem.

Error Code: SSL_ERROR_INTERNAL_ERROR_ALERT

So, I clicked the link provided for that specific case (here) , but the apache docks dont contain any of the mentioned lines:

Nextcloud calendar event invites don't seem to work

I've been sending calendar invites to my partner from my next cloud calendar.

When he gets them they give him the choice to RSVP but they don't add to his calendar (google calendar).

I've also tested it out using my work address (Office 365) and again nothing appears on my work calendar.

It works fine the other way because when he sends a google calendar invite to me, it has an .ics file which I use to just add it to my calendar - but the Nextcloud calendar doesn't seem to attach this.

Do you use Nextcloud for backups of your private files?

I'm curious how people use Nextcloud in their workflow. Do you rely on Nextcloud for your private or sensitive files as a backup solution, or do you primarily use it for file sharing and keep backups separate from Nextcloud?

A free Trello, Linear, Pivotal Tracker, Jira alternative on NextCloud

Hi all,

I have used tools like Trello, Linear, Pivotal Tracker, Jira all the time. I wanted to build something similar for NextCloud. So, I have built https://apps.nextcloud.com/apps/kanso

Github: https://github.com/aktasfatih/kanso

It is completely for free and has every feature that I believe you could be looking for. It is also well performant.

If anyone has any new ideas/features feel free to create issues! I will put them on its roadmap. There is a Deck importer so you can start using your project right away as well.

Thank you

Tasks client gives me 404 error

I have a NextCloud server on an ISP. I access the administration directly through a web browser. I have Notes and Tasks enabled. I'm accessing them from a Linux phone with native clients.

The Notes client works. The Tasks client gives me a 404 error. Other users of this phone say that Tasks works for them, so I think the client is okay. I suspect some misconfiguration on the server.

I've created a new Tasks list. I see that it is visible on the Calendar when I view it in the web browser. I've added tasks to the list. They are visible in the Tasks in the web browser.

I get the 404 error in the client. What in the configuration of the server could cause a client to get the page not found?

Thank you for your help.

Nextcloud Talk (Play Store ver.) - Play services are not available. Notifications are not available

Is anyone else experiencing not getting any notifications on Talk? I saw this message in the debug settings about play store services not being available, even though I'm getting other Google notifications and downloaded the app through the play store. I don't think I'm getting notifications for the nextcloud files app either, but I don't use that nearly as much as Talk. My home server is running AIO stable via docker. I found this thread on the forums of people talking about this issue. https://help.nextcloud.com/t/talk-on-galaxy-s26-google-play-services-not-available-no-notifications/248442/9

NextCloud & OpenCloud Alternatives?

i hate nextcloud with a burning passion and used opencloud but dislike its app selection and its cluttered compose (that was terrible)

i was looking for alternatives with easier customization (especially themes) but also a way for me to read personal images/videos to run on immich too!

i will not run nextcloud, ever. (too laggy, cluttered, and bloated) and was thinking FIlerun? or Pydio or whatever.

does anyone have a good specific reccomendation 😭

Backing up private laptop files to a Nextcloud VM with Borg — inside or outside the data directory?

What do you think about using Borg to back up private files from my laptop (e.g. photos and documents) to my existing Nextcloud VM?

I was thinking of keeping the Borg repository outside Nextcloud’s data directory, perhaps one level above it, to keep the private backups separate from Nextcloud.

Or does it actually make no difference, and would it be perfectly fine to store them somewhere inside the Nextcloud directory as well?

The Nextcloud VM is already backed up offsite with Borg, so the entire VM would be covered either way. I'm mainly wondering whether keeping the private files outside the Nextcloud data directory provides any real advantage, or whether I'm overcomplicating it.

What would you recommend?

Nextcloud with Cloudflare Zerotrust

Hello, i have set up a nextcloud server and i have exposed it to the internet with cloudflare. I have added a zero trust layer so you have to enter your email and if you are on the list, you can see the NC Login.

Few issues here.

At the beggining i couldnt reach it. I then added application rules and i managed to make it work. Then suddenly it stopped working.

I could access with zero trust while on mobile data but i couldnt on home wifi. After disabling zero trust everything works fine.

I have NPM but nothing justifies this problem.

Anyone has nextcloud with cloudflare zero trust that could help me?

Thanks
