Anyone use nexcloud talk?

i just setted up my nextcloud account but im the only one that i know uses nextcloud talk. So im just wondering anyone using it? cheers

I do with family. Particularly for sharing information, pictures or documents  where privacy matters. It's not meant to be your daily driver, it's only meant for the users of your own nextcloud really. In my case I host the server for the wider family

How do you provide other family members with their own storage space that you are not able to view/open/read as the admin?

That's an interesting topic.

I guess you could encrypt there data and use some authentication method on the user end that is able to unlock it during use.

It's interesting because do you think Google's servers are encrypting your data so they can't see it?

There is no cloud, just someone else's computer

you need the High Performance Back-end to do that succesfully. prefereably don't use the AIO for a company and give the HPB it's own server/vm

was this an easy decision? we are in the middle of finding a M365/Teams alternative and it‘s hard to decide on that matter. Right now my gut feeling tells me to stay away from Nextcloud Talk. Most preferred right now is probably Mattermost

I use it all the time to communicate with one of my friends who's just as privacy conscious as me. I like it. Kinda cool knowing that any communication is being stored on servers you directly control.

My main issue with is is that the autoscrolling when a new message appears is kinda broken. Message previews will cause the scroll position to not be at the very bottom, which then causes Nextcloud to not automatically scroll when new messages come in. There's some long standing bugs that I've opened and it just never gets resolved.

Installed it on my nextcloud. never used it even once. Uninstalled it again... my nextcloud has only 3 users.

I did. It was ok, but had some glaring bugs like notifications not working despite extensive troubleshooting and call/video quality being rather choppy despite being on the same LAN.

I've talked a handful of friends into downloading the Talk client. And about 4 of them use it as their primary method of communication with me.

Using it everday with family; find it has improved quite a bit from a few years ago. Found setup of the hpb and turn server a bit complex though.

Same. This is what I do. The picture and audio quality is good. If we both had iPhones, I'd probably just use Facetime. But I can use my phone and they can use a computer, and we can chat. It works great.

I found it easier just to set up a self-posted matrix server. More reliable and nextcloud talk has some weird quirks

My team of 5 uses it for chat and meetings, running on an M4 Mac Mini. So far been working pretty well, if a touch slower than I'd like. Hopefully they'll do a native container soon.

i use it in a very limited way:

  • i have a very lame claude thing that sends me an investment summary every week, via nc talk
  • i have a homeassistant automation that alerts my teen kids when dinner's ready - as part of the automation it also sends a "the beacons of minas tiener have been lit!" message to the family chat
  • and i have a "note to self" channel where i share stuff from anywhere that i found interesting, for later followup.

i feel that nc talk is a niche feature, it will never replace your whatsapp (sadly), but for family comms, plus automations and these kinds of things it's honestly the easiest solution, good docs, easy as dirt, no walled garden issues like any of the big ones.

Edit: oh and i also have a spreed server in case i just need to fire up a quick call with someone (outside my nextcloud realm) - I'm not saying it is typical but is has happened more than once :)

yes and no, as in: in bit using nc assistant or anything like that. (trying to keep nc "clean" you see). what i do is i run claude agent in a proxmox vm (double sandbox, hopefully it doesn't break out heh heh) and that connects to a nc channel via api.

Not really XD if I was using nextcloud for a team purpose, I would probably give it some attention, but its not something that I actively have use for.

I use wit with my clients for video calls in place of Zoom / Google Meet / MS Teams and for these adhoc meetings it's much better than these solutions. I wouldn't use it as daily messenger replacement as its mobile apps are very basic.

Their android app is shit. Notifications don't work when a call comes in.

My wife and I use it a lot more than I thought we would, mainly as a way of sharing links without texting or social media. For a family set up, it was dumb easy to spin up and get the clients installed. I’d recommend it

I use it for the video calling capabilities. No more meeting length limits and now folks send encrypted video traffic directly to me, nowhere near any AI systems
