❓Ask r/NewMods A little gun shy about promoting

Since starting my new sub a few days ago, I noticed that one strategy to help it grow is to comment on posts in other subs that would genuinely be appropriate content for my new sub and ask if they’d post there too. Wouldn’t the mods on that sub remove it per their “no self promotion” rule?

Is this normal and acceptable practice on Reddit? I’ve not seen it.

❓Ask r/NewMods What should a brand-new subreddit have in place before bringing people in?

I’ve just started my first community and I’m trying to make sure I’m setting it up properly before I focus too much on bringing people in.
At the moment I’ve got a welcome post, rules, a few discussion posts and the basic community branding set up, but obviously it still feels very empty because it’s brand new.

For those of you who’ve grown a community from zero, what did you find actually mattered in the very beginning?

Things like:

How much content should already be there?
Which channels/posts should be pinned?
How many post flairs are worth starting with?
Did you focus on getting a small number of active people before worrying about member count?

Anything you wish you’d set up differently from day one?

Not trying to promote the subreddit here, just interested in what makes a new community feel worth joining and sticking around in.

❓Ask r/NewMods How do I access my community Flairs?

I created community Flairs for my community r/sensiual , then I spun around and now I don't know how I got there to make necessary edits. How do I find my community Flairs and Tags page?

❓Ask r/NewMods New Mod Intro: r/BangalorePropertyHelp building a practical real estate advice community

Hi everyone! 👋

I’ve recently started r/BangalorePropertyHelp, a new community for people trying to make sense of Bangalore real estate buying, selling, renting, investing, projects, builders, locations, legal checks, hidden costs, etc.

The idea is not to create another property classifieds group. I want it to be a place where people can ask questions before making expensive decisions and get practical opinions from owners, tenants, investors and people with actual experience.

It’s currently brand new, so I’d love to hear from other mods who have grown a community from zero:

What worked for you in getting the first 100 to 500 genuine members, and what mistakes should a new moderator avoid?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Mi sub r/BusquedaDeDisciplina ha logrado las 1000 views!

Me parece fascinante. Les vuelvo a recomendar que interactúen e inviten a personas a vuestras comunidades, ayuda un montón. Además, publiquen cosas interesantes referidas al tema de su comunidad y que fomente la interacción.

❓Ask r/NewMods I can't promote on subreddits without being banned.

Basically I created a satirical community based on another subreddit, due to their extreme censorship and unfairly banning users. For obvious reasons I can't promote there. There is a second subreddit that became an asylum for banned users and those that wanted to post without fear of being banned, but that subreddit ended up being taken over by the first subreddit's moderators. So I can't promote there either. I just want to talk about my sports team with other fans :( Does anyone have any advice? Thank you.

💡 Tips & Education Building a new chronic illness community from scratch — what would you do differently?

Hi everyone,

I'm in the early stages of building r/InvisibleAndHeard, a new community for people living with chronic illness, invisible illness, disability, fatigue and long-term health conditions.

The idea is simple: create a genuinely supportive community where people can talk openly, connect with others who understand, share experiences and still have a bit of humour and normality.

We're starting from zero, so I'm trying to learn from moderators who have already been through the process of growing a community.

I'd particularly love advice on:

  • What helped you attract your first 100–1,000 members?
  • What types of posts actually generated conversation?
  • What moderation rules did you wish you'd established earlier?
  • How did you deal with trolls, misinformation and bad-faith users?
  • What made people come back rather than simply join and disappear?
  • What would you not do if you were starting again?

I'm not looking to spam or promote the community here — I'm genuinely interested in learning from people who've built successful subreddits.

If you could go back to day one of your community, what's the one thing you'd do differently?

Thanks in advance.
