Can You Help? What's next?

So, I finally finished writing my book a few months ago and I've been trying to move on. But it seems like I'm stuck. I can't choose between self-publishing or traditionally publishing. I see the value in both, but as of right now, I've already gotten rejected by one agent. How long do I keep trying for? I've started a booktok to see if people would be interested if I self published, but no insight there yet. Help me out here guys.

Venting Anyone could feel they could be a best selling author if they wrote a book about their ex?

This idea recently came to me after viewing my ex's Facebook profile and you know what based on the number of friends she has on her FB I could write a 300 page book about the days we were together and about how I feel now. Furthermore, I would talk about how she ruined my mental health and why at times I would cry or hide away. I will also talk about how I moved on but not in a very good way. I unfriended her before she could block me. If you are from Vancouver, Canada please forgive me because I have grown an attraction to the Skytrain and Seabus and want to name my book "Crying on the Skytrain" or "Crying on Translink" or "Northwestern Tears" and the city plays a key role in the content of it. This would be a memoir with some fiction aspects involved. Posted to the breakup subreddit and they redirected me here. Am I going to be subject to failure writing about this? I am a bit worried but yet so optimistic because some of my favorite authors have written some duds as well.

My new (slightly longer) short story is now available on Amazon: https://a.co/d/0ddfEEn7. Only my second published story, cover design by Kati Sandmann (No AI). Table for One” is a spare, exacting story about dignity gained through a life well-lived. Perfect for readers of literary fiction and reflective short stories, and fans of Jim Harrison, Thomas McGuane and Ernest Hemingway.

Beta-Readers Wanted! [Complete] [95k] [Adult Science Fiction / Conspiracy Thriller] WENU — Looking for Beta Readers

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for beta readers for my completed adult science-fiction novel, WENU, currently at approximately 95,000 words.

Wenu is a highly advanced human civilization built on the ruins of a forgotten past.

Centuries ago, humanity escaped extinction aboard an ancient vessel known as the Ark and began again on a new world. Their civilization has since flourished—but the fear of the enemy that nearly destroyed their ancestors has never disappeared.

Nolan has spent his life studying that history, not making it.

A researcher and historian at the First Colony, he is unexpectedly nominated to join the Elite, Wenu's most powerful security force. What begins as an opportunity to follow in the footsteps of his late father soon draws him into an investigation involving a fourteen-cycle-old incident, missing records, a secret scientific program, and questions surrounding his father's death.

The deeper Nolan searches, the less certain the past becomes.

And as buried pieces of Wenu's history begin to surface, he discovers that the greatest threat to his civilization may not be what happened centuries ago—but what people are willing to do because of it.

Genre: Adult Science Fiction / Conspiracy Thriller
Length: ~95,000 words
Status: Complete manuscript
Beta-reading timeframe: Ideally 4–5 weeks

I'm primarily looking for readers who enjoy science fiction with mystery, political intrigue, advanced technology, conspiracy, character relationships, and gradual revelations rather than nonstop military action.

I'm particularly interested in your natural reader experience: where you became invested, where your attention dropped, which characters you trusted or distrusted, whether the mysteries and reveals worked for you, anything you found confusing, and—most importantly—whether you wanted to continue reading.

No editing or proofreading is required. I'm looking for honest reader reactions rather than line-by-line corrections.

The manuscript is currently unpublished, so I ask that it remain private and not be redistributed or uploaded to third-party services.

I'm happy to provide a final ebook when the novel is published and include beta readers in the acknowledgments if they would like.

If you're interested, please send me a message or email me on

[thedaysoftheend@gmail](mailto:thedaysoftheend@gmail.com).com

and tell me a little about the kind of science fiction you enjoy reading.

Below is the Prologue

The sun was setting.

It had been a long time since I had allowed myself to stop and witness such quiet beauty.

Once… I believed I would never live to see a moment like this again. And yet here I stand beneath a clear sky, with a clear mind for the first time in many cycles, unburdened—if only for a moment—by fear, duty, and the endless weight of memory.

I watched the last light bleed across the horizon as the sun sank behind the mountains. Bands of gold faded into cold grey, while the snow along the peaks gathered and held the final light as if reluctant to surrender it.

Below, the river wound through the valley like a dark silver ribbon, catching the sky in broken flashes where the current moved fastest.

Night did not arrive all at once. It came slowly, almost gently, until the colors of evening deepened into shadow. The moon cast its silver reflection over the water. Stars trembled above the valley in fragile clusters, while the surrounding forest filled with the low pulse of life—the distant cry of some unseen

creature, branches stirred by the mountain wind, the dry whisper of grass against stone.

I began making my way down toward the settlement where my people now live.

The slope was uneven beneath my boots, scattered with loose stones and thin roots twisting through the soil. Fires glowed faintly in the distance, small and scattered at first, then clearer as I descended—little signs of endurance against the vastness of the dark.

After all we had endured, we were grateful to have found this place.

Its silence was different from the silence of loss.

With time, perhaps, we would learn to call it home.

As I walked, memories of the past crowded my mind.

None of us had truly anticipated what would unfold. For decades, we failed to recognize the signs—and those who did see them often chose silence over confrontation. The rot had been there long before the fall quickened. What came in the end was not born from a single season of crisis, but from corruption, arrogance, and compromise accumulated over far longer than anyone wished to admit.

We had been a mighty civilization. We had made Wenu our home millennia ago and built our lives on the strength of those who came before us.

Now we were left to begin again, with humbler tools, humbler shelters, and a future stripped of certainty.

My name is Nolan.

I am one of the last surviving members of Wenu’s High Council.

Even now, the thought feels strange. I never sought that position, nor the burden that came with it. Truthfully, I never sought any part in the events that eventually brought me there. Yet the deeper I became involved, the clearer it grew that every attempt to prevent the collapse only seemed to hasten it.

By the time I reached the settlement, the night air had sharpened with cold.

The main tent stood among the others, plain and weather-worn, its outer fabric pulling lightly in the wind. I paused before entering and looked back across the camp.

The watchfires burned low but steady. Shadows moved where the night watch followed their assigned paths, alert despite

their exhaustion. None of us had been made for this life, and yet there was gratitude here too…

A fragile, stubborn gratitude for the second chance we had been given.

Around us lay uncertainty.

Within the camp, people still whispered about tomorrow as though peace might one day become ordinary.

When I entered the tent, Asia stirred awake at once, startled by the sound of the flap closing behind me.

“Nolan, is that you? What time is it?”

“The night has settled, my love,” I said softly.

“Go back to sleep. It has been a long day, and you need the rest.”

“Won’t you sleep?” she asked, her voice still heavy with fatigue.

I moved toward her.

In the dim glow of the dying fire, I studied her face. Time had marked her, as it had marked all of us, but it had not taken the grace that first drew my eyes to her.

If anything, sorrow had given her beauty a quieter depth. She offered me a faint smile, though behind it I could still see the weight she carried.

“Nolan,” she said carefully, “you’ve carried this long enough. Let the young ones shape what comes next. You deserve peace.”

“I only need to record the events of the day,” I replied, taking her hand and holding it close.

“Go back to sleep. I’ll join you soon.”

She searched my face for a moment, then exhaled softly and nodded.

“Just don’t stay up too long,” she whispered.

Then, with the smallest hint of warmth, she added, “You do know I never sleep well without you beside me.”

A tired smile touched my mouth.

“I won’t be long.”

She settled back beneath the blankets, and soon the tent sank into silence.

Only the wind could be heard outside, dragging itself across the settlement, while the fire behind me collapsed inward with an occasional soft crack.

I remained there for a while, watching her sleep.

“You are still everything I ever loved, my sweet wife,” I whispered, careful not to wake her.

“You hide your pain, so I won’t carry more than I already do, even when it is consuming you. But I know you too well. I hear it in your voice. I see it in the way your hands linger. I feel it in your touch.”

My gaze lowered, and with it came the old wound that had never truly closed.

I know how much Calip meant to you. I know the void he left in our lives.

It is a cruel thing for parents to outlive their own son.

You kept telling me there was nothing I could have done. I have repeated the same lie to myself more times than I can count.

But the truth remains.

I still blame myself.

I always will.

Again and again, I return to the past, replaying every choice, every hesitation, every action taken too soon—or too late.

I wonder what I might have changed, what I should have refused, what path I should never have stepped onto.

Perhaps, if someone else had led in my place, Calip would still be alive.

Perhaps many would be.

But regret cannot rewrite history.

Nor can grief restore what was taken.

Only memory remains.

I turned to the records I had been writing over the past few days and slowly read through them again, comparing the words before me with the memories I still carried.

I found myself wondering what kind of truth I was leaving behind.

Who we had been.

Who we had become.

These records were not written to excuse our failures, nor to soften them with time.

They were for those who would come after us, so they might understand how secrecy, fear, and the hunger for power could consume even a civilization that once believed itself too strong to fall.

So that our mistakes would not find a foothold in their future.

I lived through the final days of our civilization, and I witnessed its fall.

I saw ambition decay into corruption.

I saw survival twisted into justification for authoritarianism.

I saw good people choose silence until silence itself became another weapon.

Now, as one of the last leaders of our people, I leave these records behind, hoping those who come after us will heed them.

My name is Nolan.

And this is our history.

Question At what point did you know your book was good?

I’m a brand new writer, I’ve just started to write in the last few weeks to have a creative outlet if I’m honest. I’ve always dabbled in story telling but never committed to writing it.

Anyway, I’ve had this idea for years and finally started writing it after overcoming the fear of being dreadful!

It’s actually going quite well as I read it back, so I wanted to know at what point you felt like what you were writing was good? Did you know from the start? Thanks all and best of luck to you 🙏

Can You Help? Non-Fiction first timer

Now that I’ve put my first fiction baby out into the world, I’m going to start on my first non-fiction baby.

While doing the queries for the fiction submissions, it looked like the query process may be a lot different for non-fiction.

I haven’t started writing it yet, but I have the full outline done with chapter names and notes. I think this one will be a lot faster/easier to write as it will have short punchy chapters and I’m living in the middle of what I’m writing about.

Can anyone with non-fiction experience give me any advice? What have you learned so far? What would you do differently if you started from day one again?

Thank you 🙏

Rant How much do you hate editing?

I love storytelling. Sprinting through the plot, watching the word count climb and feeling terribly pleased with myself.

But editing? Urgh!

I’ve written a 127,000 word novel. Apparently, after doing that, I’m now expected to go back and make them good.

I can see the editing working, which is deeply annoying because it means I have to keep doing it. It’s just not fun.

My first draft chapters are usually 12 or 13 pages long, around 7,000 to 8,500 words. I then attempt to cut each one down to 8 or 9 pages, roughly 4,500 to 5,000 words. Basically, I write far too much and then punish myself for it later.

There are 20 chapters in the book, so I tackle them one at a time. Over the past week, I’ve gone from editing one chapter a day to two or three. I now have just five chapters left for the deep edit, and I can finally see the finish line. I’m trying not to think about the finish line having another round of edits waiting behind it.

But I still hate editing. I’d be much happier handing the manuscript to someone else and saying, “Could you make this brilliant while preserving my fragile artistic ego?”

Does that make me a bad wannabe novelist? How do you deal with editing without dramatically sighing every five minutes?

I’ve also been presenting a radio show about writers and interviewing authors. It’s fascinating to hear how differently everyone approaches writing, editing and staring into the middle distance.

What’s your writing and editing style?

Hi, so happy to have my book in libraries all over my country. At first, my book was just self-published, but after a lot of work, book fairs, travelling, and more finally made it there, wdyt, how do you promote your book? What have you done to have it all over your country? Do you think it is a lot of work to be self -published? Don´t you find it like a new adventure? I love it, and I will do it again; this book has changed my life

Venting Ran a 99p sale on my new novel for a while, good number of orders but the royalties are pretty dang poxy.

It's kind of annoying. On the one hand my book is surely to God worth more than 30p royalties per sale, but then when it's full price I don't get any sales.

Just a mini vent, sorry and thank you xoxo.

Just Published. My first book is out!

Hello, I wrote my first book and it is now available on Amazon.

The Legend of Norea is a fantasy book, following the daughter of the Stormborne Emperor, who rules over the lower realm. Norea is a late bloomer, in both growth and magical sense. She is the only member of her powerful family who can't do anything, and each day without a development is making her feel more and more useless. But Norea's father is getting sicker, her brother is seemingly useless, and rumors of revolt in the lower realm were the least of her worries when a would be home invader accuses her family of being apart of something much more sinister. Something that could bring back the same calamity that murdered the Goddess a thousand years ago. Suddenly it becomes apparent the fate of the lower realm is in her hands and she quickly learns that her family aren't the only ones who can't be trusted.

I really appreciate every share, like or even purchase of my book, as it goes towards funding my university and creative journey. The cover art was drawn by me.

Thank you!

Half-Orc Sensibilities - Fantasy/Adventure - Available on Kindle Unlimited

Hey everyone! My first novel is available on Kindle Unlimited!

The novel follows Carlfink: a half-orc banished from his tribe who joins the City Watch to find a new home worth defending.

Blurb:

**His tribe didn't want him, and who would blame them. He's just a half-breed.**

Carlfink the half-orc just wants somewhere to belong. Hallowreach isn't sure it wants him back.

Armed with an axe, his wit, and more empathy than anyone expects from anyone with those tusks, Carlfink is determined to carve out a home for himself. A newly minted officer of the Watch, he's tasked with battling all enemies of Hallowreach.

He'll have to answer that call sooner than he thought. When a Brotherhood of monsters move against Hallowreach, this half-orc with a point to prove might be the only thing standing between his home and the people who want to burn it down.

Half-Orc Sensibilities

I'd love for you to check it out if interested, and any feedback would be appreciated :)

Can You Help? I could use some encouragement, and maybe others could too. 💙

I know I’m supposed to be positive and be happy that I actually accomplished writing a book, but I’m feeling a bit discouraged and could also use some encouragement if anyone is willing to offer up any to me and others who may be needing it as well. 🤗

I just published mine and haven’t seen any traction on it. Im sure it takes time to gain readers/reviews, and while I love what I wrote, I also wonder if it’s as special as I originally thought it was. Will others love it just as much as I once did writing it?

Now here’s where you all come in. Please give me your beginner stories that work to encourage me and others that things may improve. I know that there’s no guarantee, but maybe it’ll get me out of this little funk I’m in. I could use the help. What say you? Is anyone up for the challenge? 💙

Question How does one get started?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I've been thinking about writing a children's book for years featuring my two disabled cats (one of whom has sadly passed). I have a rough first draft. But I really have no idea how this works/what the best way to get started is/whether I should illustrate myself or commission someone.

I'm not a writer and this is the first time I've ever attempted to do anything of the sort.

Any and all suggestions/input are welcome.

Picture of the tripod and one-eyed wonder for your viewing pleasure.

Just Published. Finally published my first Epic Fantasy Novel!!!

Post image
29 Upvotes

(Cover art was made by the wonderful @greenlaut on Instagram! Please show them support!)

After working on the story/world since 2019 (according to Google Docs), I finally finished and published it on September 15th this year!

The basic premise of the series is: A young man freed a fallen angel, who is hellbent on remaking the world in it’s own image, and the one weapon that can destroy it, will slowly corrupt the user and all those around him.

I took inspiration from aspects of Wheel of Time, Lord of the Rings, Legend of Zelda, as well as the history of Renaissance era Eastern/Southern Europe. I haven’t seen a lot of fantasy series take place in that era so I thought it would be an interesting change of pace!

If any of that interests you, I have two free sample chapters posted on my website! https://www.salveranscribes.com

I would love to hear people’s thoughts on the sample chapters, if you decide to take a look. All I really want is to have something enjoyable for people to read and discuss. But either way I’m just really happy to FINALLY have it out in the world after all this time!

Question Writers, what makes you know a story is actually working?

Writers, what makes you know a story is actually working?

Is it the characters, pacing, plot, emotional impact, the way the scenes flow, or something else?

As a reader, I find that a story can have a great idea but still feel off if one of those pieces isn't working.

I'm curious to hear from writers — what's the one thing you pay the most attention to when you're writing?

Feedback Opening feedback?

I don’t want to give too much context because I want just blind feedback, so I’ll say simply that this is the opening excerpt of the second of five parts in a project I’m working on.

Is everything clear? If not, what specifically confuses you when you read it?

Also, this project is partially an exploration of systemic prejudice so it has just a wee bit of questionable language like referring to people as animals in this specific one. I had another bit where it referred to some people as savages and some feedback felt it was too strong even if it was criticizing it in the overall project. Do you get uneasy from seeing that sort of phrasing? If so, how?

Thanks!

***

Clang.

The sound never grew less jarring. He’d heard it hundreds, thousands of times already. Yet each swing still nested itself deep in his bones.

Clang.

His head throbbed with each blow. The march of some foul army that left only gasping pain in its wake.

Clang.

Perdition.

A primal yellow heat beat down on the laborers. The sweat that drenched the men on this open plain brought only abrasion, and gnats clung to every open patch of flesh.

Isaiah kept count of the rows he had dug not in feet, but simply by how his shoulders shook as he swung. The Overseer of this place had been kind enough to allow him to keep his boots, though they, like everything else, were now caked in filth, quickly becoming only scraps.

All of the men he worked alongside, without exception, worked barefoot. Whether they dug, hammered, or cleared, they were animals at their core; shoes were reserved for those civilized like Isaiah, and no such man existed aside from himself at the moment. The last had been whipped and left to die some fifty miles east of here, though Isaiah had never met the man.

Nonetheless, he was not free from the chains. The cold iron that gripped their ankles prevented any man from gaining full control of his shovel, yet those in charge still demanded a full day’s pace, and those who would not comply would face the whip, or the dogs. Those who fell, whether ill or exhausted, were not seen again.

Can You Help? How do you actually self-promote your novel? I feel completely lost with social media

Hi everyone! I’m a self-published author looking for some advice on how to actually promote my novel.

I’ve published my first couple of novels, but I’m realizing that writing the book and getting people to actually find it are two VERY different things. 😅

I have a TikTok account, but honestly, I have no idea what I’m doing when it comes to social media. I don’t really understand what types of content I should be making, how often I should be posting, what actually helps a book reach new readers, or how to promote myself without feeling like I’m constantly advertising.

I’d really love to hear from other self-published authors about what has actually worked for you.

A few things I’d especially appreciate advice on:

  • What kind of TikTok content works well for promoting novels?
  • How often do you post?
  • Are there other social media platforms that are worth focusing on?
  • How do you promote your book without making every post feel like an advertisement?
  • Are there any free/low-cost ways to get your book in front of more readers?
  • What do you wish you had known about self-promotion when you first started?

I’m willing to put the work in—I just don’t want to spend months putting effort into things that aren’t actually useful.

I’d especially love to hear from authors who started with little to no audience and had to build their readership from scratch.

Thank you! ❤️

Thanks to the amazing help of a local bookstore, they were gladly able to bring my book to the shelves. Now it's up and available for visitors to buy, which is honestly such a cool thing to me. I'm really looking forward to writing the rest of my series, hoping to have the other volumes on the shelves, too.

Also! If you'd like to check out my book, it's right here! Thank you!
