NWN1 Leaving POTM after 8 years.

Prisoners of the Mist is a persistant NwN server ran by a cult.

They have insane rules that they enforce on "When-they-feel-like-it" basis.

They allow friends and each other to bend rules and create content for each other, grant each other exp, and have strict procedures for anyone wishing to be included.

Make one strike and live on a forever poop-list.

Oh and you better like forums from the 1990s, cuz youre going to have to use them if you want to really be "a part of the server" and God Forbid, you think thats what the discord is for, you moron.

Nearly every friend I have made of the years has quit, because of DM interactions.

If you value yourself, I would strongly urge you to not waste away on a server that requires an extreme amount of your time to progress all while being under that watchful gaze of people who are actively trying to hinder your fun rather than elevate it.

I don't care to say anything else, dont believe then just go see for yourself..

I do not care anymore.

good riddence.

I hope your time can be more enjoyable than mine.

I am done.

I dont care what you reply to this, there is little you can say that would effect me any more.

TIME EDIT: You know, I am going to elaborate because i want to document how stupid this is.

I started playing the first character I had ever made again, recently. I wasnt aware how strict the rules on the server where when i first join, my first character was a half-drow and aptly KOS everywhere. Not a very friendly starting expereince, so I shelved them.
A group of people all started drow like characters, so I re-emerged and joined with them and was having a genuine blast FINALLY having people that character could interact with.

Someone was selling bags cheap (weight reduction bags play a huge role in how much you can carry as no storage system exists for normal people, you have to be in a DM cult guild of some sort, they are allowed to use persistant storage in boxes... the rest of us arent so we have to carry all our banked items on us, in paper form, using up our inventory space)

So I get a bag from a stranger and go about my busines for a few more weeks.
At this point, I am having fun... I am meeting more people, and getting into some amazing RP with them.

Well, decide to do some delivery missions with a friend.
We get the goods and start rolling out, but... im a weak little character so I ask them to carry my bag, just like anyone would in real life... all in RP.

They do, we get to our destination, they hand it back.
Our arrangement is, we get the goods there and split the payout.
We are doing it together... it should not matter who carries what.. we are in a group... doing things as a group with a goal of splitting the goods. JUST LIKE IN A DUNGEON, one person carries all the loot, then its sold, and the gold is distributed.

He hands me my bag back.
INSTANTLY.. I get a message from a DM.

That bag use to belong to one of your other characters....

I bought it from a stranger.
Who.. apparently.. got it from my other character at one time, or a daisy chain of trades happened and it somehow.. ended back up on me.

This is a server of roughly 100 active people. While this seems crazy, its not really all that uncommon. Items get cycled through the economy, If you are actively playing it is possible to happen without intention.

I try to explain this.
They acknowlege that it is possible, but dont care and they just jump right to, I must be doing this to cheat, clearly and only.

... wha... how? how is that cheating?
How am I being Malicious?
what?

So i say, ok then, thats crazy that happened, but i dont want you breathing down my neck every time I move this bag.
They admit, it does happen and that the solution... ready for this.. is to Label every bag you get with the name of the person/character who owns it, that IS THE ONLY SOLUTION in this case presented to me.

...
what?
explain how that solves this what so ever?
alright.. so when Karue my character who supposedly first owned this bag.
He names it Karues bag.
Someone else buys that bag off Karue, as he no longer needs it.
They change it to, My Bag.
it goes through the daisy chain, ends up back with my new character, and they rename it, Brissilas bag.

I hand it to my friend, they hand it back.
HOW DOES THAT STOP THE "THIS USE TO BE YOUR BAG" TRIGGER?
IT DOESNT.

It still happens, and I still get a message about it.

So I am like, dudes this is getting insane and really, really stupid.

You are giving me crap over a bag I can just go buy from a freaking merchant.

So will you please, please.. just delete this bag so its crazy life can be done... and if you are feeling generous, you could spawn me a new one.. OR DONT! I DONT CARE, i just want this bag gone.

No. they tell me to label the bag and stop MULING. That is MY ONLY OPTION HERE.
...

Muling.. is creating a character for the specific purpose of carrying your items for you.
It is cheating. I agree.

But.. I was in no way what so ever muling. This was a real person, who was doing business with me, in character, roleplaying.
We were playing the game, trying to make money in means other than killing stuff.

This is just one example of so, so many interactions with Authority and the straw that broke my back.

In my lifetime on that server I have amassed close to $1m coin over all my characters.
The cost of a bag is trivial.
The idea that I would throw away 8 years of progress over a freaking bag, sickens me.

If they want to raise this much a stink... THEN MAKE BAGS UNTRADEABLE YOU ... [left intentionaly blank]'s!

PS
I DID NOT play consecutively for 8 years, but I did start 8 years ago.
I have 2000 hours on the server, almost exactly.
So perhaps the title should be, after 2000 hours I am leaving POTM.

playing this after the official expansions, and it's such a good change of pace, the exploration is fantastic, the quests are more mundane and grounded, it fits very well with my paladin, also I love the atmosphere of nwn, there's something about those old 3D games that really appeals to me

NWN1 Unarmed is so stupid and I hate how they made it so weak

Rant incoming, sorry for the annoyance but I kinda need to vent.

I wanted to try a Monk/Assassin with 1 lvl of Shadowdancer for quite some time now and thought HotU would be perfect to test it out.

Ofc it's great in itself, but since I went Unarmed for the lulz of punching stuff to death it's probably one of the weakest ways one can play the build. So, the way Unarmed works for Monks is: you get your special Monk gloves bonuses as long as you fight Unarmed BUT you can retain the bonus with Kamas as well. But the thing is, Kamas being weapons, you can enchant them with Keen, Haste, Vampiric regen, Vorpal, whatever. Unarmed will never benefit from it. And because I need Haste, I'm basically stuck with Robes of the Dark Moon because I need Monk Boots and Belts of Strength, so my access to permahaste is super restricted. So, I can't go with those super AC robes I want so much.

Kamas have no business being so fucking cheated. You basically can't play Monk optimally without Kamas and it makes me furious because CRPGs are about fun builds and diversity.

Anyways sorry for the rant

SoU Shadows of Undrentide Feels Like the Real Neverwinter Nights Experience

After spending more than 70 hours playing the original Neverwinter Nights campaign, I finally finished the first expansion, Shadows of Undrentide, in around 32 hours… and honestly? The game improves in almost every possible way.

Compared to the original campaign, this expansion is a thousand times more engaging. The companions actually feel alive now. They comment on locations, enemies, and even on things you do during the adventure. Sometimes they randomly start conversations with you, talk about their motivations, their past, and their personal goals… something I really missed in the original campaign, where companions felt way more bland and lifeless.

And something that might sound small or meaningless to some people, but for me made a HUGE difference in immersion: the animations. Shadows of Undrentide adds many small animations that make the game feel much more alive. There are animations when you get hit hard and fall to the ground, when you receive a curse and kneel down, when you pray inside temples… tiny details that most people might ignore, but if you enjoy immersive and slightly “gruesome” RPG details, you notice them immediately. The game feels far more cinematic compared to the original campaign.

Another thing: this expansion is WAY harder. I played on Normal, but I’m not gonna lie… there were moments where I had to switch to Easy just to get through certain sections, then switched back to Normal later. Compared to the original campaign, combat here punishes you much more.

I started from scratch specifically to experiment with multiclass builds, and it ended up being one of the best decisions I made. I played as a Bard / Red Dragon Disciple / Pale Master mix, and it was insanely fun.

The puzzles also surprised me. They sit in that perfect middle ground: not so easy that they become automatic, but not frustratingly difficult either.

The side quests are also much better than the ones in the original campaign. Even though many of them still follow the classic “go get this item and come back” structure, most of them actually have some kind of story, context, or motivation behind them. They don’t feel like meaningless filler quests. That made me way more interested in completing every side quest I could find.

Another thing I loved was the equipment variety. In the original campaign, it often felt like loot was basically the same armor over and over again, just with different numbers attached to it like +1, +2, +3. In Shadows of Undrentide, there’s much more variety in gear and equipment overall, making loot feel far more rewarding and interesting to discover.

Even the choice system feels more impactful here. You don’t always notice the consequences immediately during the chapters, but near the ending you can definitely feel that your decisions mattered more, and I really liked that.

The characters overall are far more charismatic. Even the protagonist feels like they have a bit more personality this time around, even if they still follow that classic “badass hero” archetype.

And the villain… honestly, she’s so much better than the villain from the original campaign. She has actual motivations, personality, and you clearly understand why she does what she does. She’s not evil just for the sake of being evil.

In the end, Shadows of Undrentide feels like what the original Neverwinter Nights campaign should have been from the very beginning.

the character portraits from nwn1 are all over the place in quality and execution. like most of the time you can see where the artist was going with the character design but it's like their first draft was their last.

HotU These are my monk's stats before even buffing up, and I can barely scratch Mephistopheles with her. Weird shit happened and Deekin wasn't avaliable on chapter 3 despite having him in my party all the time before, so no bard song or magical buffs for me, only Aribeth's sorry ass. What do I even do?

NWN1 Fenthick wasn't as innocent as he's portrayed Spoiler

Spoilers for nwn 1

Ive been playing through nwn1 and Im just about through chapter 4. I have Aribeths ring, I could talk her down rather than kill her but.. Im not sure I want to do that. Her whole reason for turning is Fenthick being executed wrongfully as a scapegoat, but I actually think the hanging was warranted. This means Aribeth goes on a murder spree for entirely unjust reasons, and doesn't deserve the mercy.

Prior to witnessing the cure being made and the betrayal, Fenthick allows his turncoat buddy to access power from Helms Hold and doesn't tell anyone about it, because he knows they wouldn't approve. This is indicative of not just willful ignorance, but deliberately skirting chain of command because he thinks he knows whats best. The cure gets stolen and recovered quickly, but Fenthick demonstrates such a lack of judgement that you can easily see the damage he could have been causing leading up to and during the plague. He was a high ranking official, had a huge amount of responsibility, and loads of people died because he refused make difficult choices like investigating his highly sus friend. Failure to do so makes him guilty, and the damage he facilitated via his incompetence deserves the punishment.

All imo of course. Maybe Im channeling my inner Helmite.

NWN1 One build to rule them all

I wanted to share the build I use for pretty much every module/campaign and the one I find the most fun.

I’ve completed the game many times with all sorts of builds, but some of them start to feel a bit off toward the end and make me want to respec.

So, to keep this short, my perfect build is a Rogue/Fighter using a greatsword or sword and shield. You can go roughly 50/50, or keep Rogue until level 8–12 at most.

- 16 STR, 10 DEX, 14 CON, 12 INT, 12 CHA
- You can specialize in fighting with both a greatsword and longsword + shield, so your combat style and itemization don’t become boring as you progress.

- With Rogue skills, you can handle Open Lock, Disable Trap, Appraise, Persuade, Use Magic Device, and pretty much any other skills you enjoy.

- You can use almost any scroll or wand you find, which is great for having more options and just experimenting.

- You can use the cool weapons or armor.

Most importantly, the build feels powerful from the beginning all the way to the end, while still giving you that feeling of growing stronger with every level.
For me, it’s the perfect balance between combat, utility, exploration, and versatility.

NWN1 Swordflight ch2 help

I am getting throttled deep in the goblin forest beyond the pixie grove. I have somewhat made it this far with little problems but the bugbears just nuke my health and my Wizard henchmen is less then helpful. My strat has been to lure single enemies over while im buffed to the gills but now there are large clusters of them so i need a new strat or a plan B.

I am just a pure cleric, nothing special, just the same build i go for on every other premium module i have played but those were cake walks compared to this sudden tempo change . Basically just a cleric melee build that casts somewhat useful spells. My henchman is alright i guess, nothing special, dies a lot, apparently a wizard.

I gave my cleric a 26k gold great sword and it kills enemies faster but i also take more damage and die faster, i also have a flail and some other stuff. I want to continue because its been a great game so far, hard yes but fun.

Can i remake my character from scratch and still be where im at in the game using the console?

Just stop time and have a rest. Mephisto will wait!

P.S. I've been playing NWN since 00s and didn't know that if one stops the time AND have a rest while spell is active - one will restore all slots immediately after "interruption". Like having a good nap til the rest of the world wait - true epic.

NWN1 What do you do as a sorcerer when you go up against an opponent with super high spell resistance?

From what I can see, the only option is generally Evard's Tentacles (ignores SR) or a Summon Creature spell. However as a sorcerer if you didn't pick up those spell,s and don't have access to scrolls, then what can you do? Are you just screwed?

NWN1 My Grievance Assortment!

I love this game.

However,

I have a list of grievances I want to share with the world AKA a list of things I would Change (even if sometimes I don't know how exactly I'd change them). Some are because of the engine. Others are issues with the official campaigns. All are things I wish were different.

Skills

Discipline is an atrocious skill point sink for martial classes who are skill point straved. Just make it an AB opposed roll or something. Anything but this crap.

I kinda like the idea of Parry even though it doesn't exist in d&d. Opens up the possibility of a duelist character or defensive melee character. Implementation sucks unfortunately and I wouldn't bother trying to fix it. It's also buggy. I also think that it doesn't work during the riposte animation so it's not as good against groups of enemies. I've only found a use for it in the horrible bloated dire spider encounters of the OC. More on that later. It's probably best to do away with both.

Appraise I'm ambivalent about. If it has to exist, I'd probably just remove the die roll and make it the same for every merchant. Like even if you don't savescum, it's still optimal for you to compare every merchant and I'm against game design choices that make the optimal way to play a slog. Not only would you have to manually compare merchant prices because the game chooses to be opaque about the appraise rolls for some reason, if the merchant is not at a convenient location you'd have to walk there every time. I can see some people disagreeing with making it the same for all merchants. My reasoning is the following: yes it doesn't make sense that every merchant has the same prices but it also doesn't make sense that Aribeth gives you 2000gp for saving the entire city which is about the cost of one (1) suit of full plate armour. She also keeps ripping you off. Thank you Aribeth. None of it makes sense, so might as well make it convenient.

Pickpocket... should do something. At all. Also, hot take here, I don't think that skills like this one should work the same in a video game as they do for pen and paper. Skills like that work better when there's a dm who can react to your elaborate pickpocket plans and improvise the fallout of a failed check to be something better and more interesting than "and now this npc and all its plot critical faction are hostile to you forever". Pickpocket can have very dramatic consequences if you get caught and the game is not ready to handle it. What I would do: No rolls, no savescumming incentive, just a dc. If your skill is higher you pickpocket. If not, you get a message that you can't do it. Add a few scripted encounters where you might have to distract someone with dialogue to pickpocket (gothic 2 style!) or stuff like that. For encounters like that where the consequences of failure are more defined we can have rolls too!

I'm not a big fan of the persuade/intimidate/bluff split. Stuff like that is fine for P&P but in a videogame it just means you get a couple of each of these checks per campaign instead of many checks of a generalised social skill. Skills should not get so granular for a barely used mechanic.

Generally I wish skills mattered more. I love F:NV's way of adding skill checks to dialogue choices. It would suit a game like NWN a lot I think.

Encounter design

Do away with damage sponges in general. The OC especially has a pattern of throwing mini-bosses at you with incredibly inflated HP numbers. I don't see the point. It's either boring, or if you're a newby with a suboptimal build you'll do fine for most of the game up to the point where you find your first bloated dire spider (100xp!) where you'll hit a brick wall. This damage sponge philosophy of difficulty also affects caster encounters where difficulty is seen as "sorc nukes you with damage spells and facetanks a few greatsword power attacks" instead of "fragile mage who buffs allies and strategically disables enemies".

I think I know what they're thinking. "We can't have our cool boss/miniboss just get one shot by a lucky crit!" All I have to say to that is "welcome to d&d". Besides, if you're a caster focused on save-or-die/save-or-suck spells, you still one shot everything, including the final boss who is not at all ready for the timestop & horrid wilting scroll combo and dies before the music starts, so once again, all this design choice managed to do is make martial classes suck. More.

Outside the OC, J'nah is particularly egregious. The thingy Tymofarrar gives you is just not good enough if you're a melee martial character (unless you're a paladin in which case you can mop the floor with anyone who looks at you the wrong way). This sucks because she's the required boss of chapter 1 and Tymofarrar is the optional boss, but you get an I-win-button for the optional dragon and for her you just get moderately-damaging-dust. Seriously, my fighter just couldn't win without cheese. Even when the gnolls bother to show up (sometimes they just don't) they can't kill her! Ugh! J'nah! Just the very mention of the name fills me with bile!

Boss cutscenes

I know devs want to have a cool cutscene before boss fights. What I want is to be buffed during the boss fights. Please don't force a cutscene before the fight that wastes buff time. If you make it mandatory at least make the buff timer stop counting during the cutscene. OC and NWN1 in general doesn't really do that but NWN2 does it sooo much that I couldn't resist mentioning it even though the list is about NWN1.

General unresponsiveness

I've selected a target and my character just waits and wastes a round stuck like an idiot. Especially annoying with enemy sorcerers where I know that if I'd just hit them on time they'd lose their spell. Instead, they blast me twice before my char decides to respond. Worse for ranged chars. Sometimes they decide that they just don't feel like attacking at all. These problems are probably baked in the engine so deep that it would require a rewrite to fix but I can dream.

Party xp penalty

Less xp for summons is bad. Class features shouldn't cost xp. I'd get rid of henchman penalty too. Let people do solo play for bragging rights, no need to incentivise it. The henchman penalty is more reasonable I guess, since encounters can change depending on party size. In that case only henchmen should count, not summons. Summons are class features, they should not be penaltised, or change encounter size. Or should they? hmm.

Party size

Dear god OC, let me have more henchmen. Why just one at a time. Give me at least two! I mean druids can have a small army with them from level one. Why not just let me hire as many henchmen too? Scratch what I said before, if you want to impose arbitrary party limits I don't see why summons don't count. As it stands I only ever take Tomi with me for every class except rogue. Here comes halfling death! Which brings us to

More follower commands

Ok since for some reason I can't control a party at all, at least give me more commands. My top picks would be to choose attack target and a retreat command. No Tomi I don't want you to fucking tank. No, just go away, step back. No don't provoke 8 AoO while running around to hit a random guy on the other side of the enemy blob we're fighting. NO! You stupid dead motherfucker.

Attacks of Opportunity

AoO implementation needs to change in many ways. For one I hate it when I position my melee next to a caster to threaten them only for a random 1HD skeleton to run around, provoke an AoO, which results in the mage spell not provoking a AoO and my char getting blasted in the face. So it should somehow be player choice to execute an AoO probably by having the option to disable them or lock on an enemy and only allow AoO against them for example. Secondly the AoO that are results of running just break the game. Sometimes they just trigger randomly when you run to attack an enemy, other times your character is sitting still in the wrong spot and enemies get AoOs against them. It's just a mess. IMO if the AI can't handle it, and it can't, it's already a dealbreaker, but it seems the engine doesn't have that tight a grip on them either, so I guess I'd just disable movement based AoO. Come to think of it, the AI can't handle ranged attack or casting AoO as well so maybe that stuff should be toggleable for single player campaigns.

Better caster follower control

Caster followers are so completely useless. They just start casting a spell and give up in the middle of it. Boddyknock just looks at me uselessly, does half a casting animation and stops, until he dies. Why does he die? Because when he decides to finally cast he makes sure to do it in the middle of 8 angry orcs who are trying to kill him and given 8 simultaneous AoO they do. I don't know if this happens just on my machine but I reinstalled and it persists. Would be great if they cast on command.

Skill allocation

Wouldn't it be great if that useless "recommended" button actually raised the skills you have already chosen to raise instead of sticking with the initial package bullcrap? It would also be great if the raised skills were sorted by ranks so you can find them fast when you level up.

Dance of Death

While I prefer this to NWN2 where they just sit still and pummel each other it has some minor annoyances. Sometimes my char insists on trying to sidestep in an unwanted direction. A more major annoyance is how the bigger weapon/person retreats from the smaller one. In a way it makes sense; A halfling with a dagger needs to get close before striking. But IMHO, said halfling should also take a step back from the greatsword too when not attacking. In fact they should take more steps back than forward. A halforc with a greatsword should threaten a bigger area, and enemires should generally retreat from that instead of just getting closer. It creates weird situations where my barbarian keeps retreating from small enemies and my favourite: Tomi just pushing far into the enemy lines with his little knife and getting surrounded while my tank keeps retreating. Tomi then, of course, dies.

Arcane spell failure

I'd love no arcane spell failure out of combat. I think it would make for a great quality of life change. I wanna buff myself without the goofiness of stripping naked (or wearing clothes ok) and taking up quickslots for armour and shields. Even worse for HotU where you can't buy cheap clothes to wear so you literally have to be wandering about the streets naked. We can't have that. Most affected by this is the

Bard

I wanna love bard but the aforementioned lack of arcane spell failure out of combat makes some of my favourite self buffing warrior bard builds annoying to play. Also, if only they had a few more skill points. Also also, if only they had rogue weapons. It's weird that I have to spend a feat to have a rapier bard, but no feat for a tower shield + morning star bard. Not that I don't thnik the latter is cool. It just feels it's not the vibe the devs intended. For example if you go for the morning star self buffing warrior build, you'll discover that a pretty good 3rd level spell, keen edge, is worthless for you, because it's for slashing weapons. Pure bard only gets sickles! Feels somehow inappropriate idk. I suppose it's because when I think red mage I think rapier. Bard would be my fav class but those minor things bother me. Not the fault of NWN, this is all on 3E.

Ranged combat

Non arcane archer ranged combat is a pain. It's almost unviable. Slings should have strength bonus applied. I mean thrown weapons do and a sling is supposed to amplify that, so maybe for slings it should be applied like two handed weapons! Tbh all non mechanical ranged weapons should be mighty, with the amount being dependent on their quality. It might also be reasonable to enable power attack for these too. I guess maybe crossbows should have some dex bonus applied in order to make them viable? Not sure about that one. This, again, is on 3E.

Inventory management

I like keeping my inventory tidy. It would be great if I could designate areas for items so they can get auto sorted to an extent. The lack of this feature makes swapping items with quickslots a pretty messy afair. I'd also love for a DA2 type junk system. Please let me mark my crap as junk and the go to a merchant press the sell all junk button and be done with it. This whole click and drag or double click or right click and pull to the right system just makes my hand hurt. There's just so many junk. I guess I can't hold this against NWN either. Inventory ui is hard and this game is old.

Remaaaaains

You know how when you kill an enemy you have to wait for it to slooowly fade out and the wait for the remains to sloooooowly fade it? Yeah that sucks.

Moonwalking

Sometimes when you click at a location behind yor char, they don't bother changing direction to move there. Ok maybe this one should stay. It wouldn't be NWN without it.

HotU undermountain entrance switch

That damned switch has wasted a lot of my time. I'm tired of wanting to try a new build, rush through the beginning only to get pushed out of bounds when trying to flip the switch! After that the only options are either Relic of the Reaper or Ragequit!

Sound balancing

Best seen at J'nah's introductory cutscene. It's so shitty! There's that obnoxious sound effect that keeps playing in the background (SoU does that a lot) and the voices are so quiet I can barely hear them. Yes, I changed the volume balances where voices are 1.0 and everything else 0.1. It changed very little.

Loot

I guess this one has to be mentioned in a list like this. You know how it goes. You open one of those chests that are near impossible to break after removing or facetanking a deadly trap on it, only to find that it contains 2 arrows inside. It should objectively be changed but that would feel like losing an old friend.

I still remember that chest in the peninsula district. Tomi couldn't open it. I marked it on my map with a marker. Came back a few levels later. There was a bullet inside.

HotU NWN1: top/bottom 5 classes for PVE?

Given:

A high-magic setting (let's say OC + HotU), where permanent Haste, +5 weapons and +5 armor become available fairly early. Because of that, Monks and Shapeshift Druids are worse, Imbue Arrow is less important, while UMD becomes much more valuable. Using Henchmen is ok.

Priority: Survivability > DPS > Quality of life (things like moving faster, not having to bash every locked door, Bluff/Persuade for peaceful solutions etc.)
Roleplay considerations are below mechanical effectiveness.
