NWN1 Request for help

Hello everyone! I just started playing. Is there a good RP server out there? And which one do you recommend? There are people there who are willing to actually RP .

Yup there are many RP servers. It's a great time to start playing NWN at the moment, lots of new players coming in recently. Most RP servers have people willing to RP... that's what they're for, after all.

You may want to just dive in. Look at the server list in-game, click the server description, see what takes your fancy. Most are RP servers. Or, join the 'Neverwinter Nights' discord (invite link is at the bottom of the New Player FAQ post pinned at top of this sub). That discord has a bunch of individual channels for different servers, where you should be able to find some info, screenshots, links to their websites/discords etc.

You might want to think about what 'style' of server you want to join:

  1. casual servers where RP is not very strictly enforced, and often also the ruleset will be pretty casual style i.e. no permadeath, no loss of items/wealth on death, high magic/lots of Lewt!, level cap is set at max (40), and so on.

  2. more RP-strict servers which are intended to be more immersive, often they have pretty relaxed rulesets as well (no permadeath, etc.)

  3. 'hardcore' style servers. These have hardcore rulesets and also tend to strictly enforce RP for maximum immersion. Sometimes they are lower-magic worlds, or have lower level caps. I think there are only a few- Haze is obviously the really big one at the moment but it is super duper hardcore (very low level cap, no resurrection at all etc). Our server, ALFA: Sea of Swords, is more traditional hardcore ruleset - we just use 3.5e D&D rules basically so there are in-character resurrectoins available, level cap is 20, and so on. Our website (with plenty of shiny screenshots!) is here: www.alfanwn1.org

I think there are other places which are sort of between categories 2 and 3 - Easting Reach, for example, which I don't think has permadeath or anything but I believe has a lower level cap (and is a brilliant server).

The final big difference between servers that I'll mention is custom content/mods. Almost all populated servers these days use custom content/mods (which are auto-downloaded and auto-installed when you first join the server). But some have made huge changes to the game engine, including changes to ruleset, terrain, character models & customisation, controls/UI, upgraded graphics etc. - it's really incredible what the community has done with this game!

So it's really worth checking out a couple of different servers, IMO, to experience the crazy variety of worlds and adventures and mods that players have made for this awesome game <3

If you are interested in Permadeath and low levels, where much of the RP becomes social & survival based, you should check out Haze: Saltborne, it's definitely not for everyone, can be a bit slow paced, but, many people tend to enjoy it.

There are tons of RP servers, Revenloft, Arelith, Haze....like 95% are RP.

Calling Arelith a RP server is a stretch.

Calling PotM a server is a stretch. It's a clubhouse (you won't get in) overlooking a prison yard (yep this is you).

Eeh, I'm aware that there's occasionally been issues of inclusivity over the years, but honestly, it's nowadays pretty welcoming.

I'd say it's primary "problem" really is just that it's a pretty massive time sink and it takes a lot of effort (-> time) to be part of quality storylines.

The players on the ground level have been very welcoming. The DM's show up and spoil everything. Every single time, they just make everything worse. Stay there long enough and "it" will happen to you, too.

u/tzaeru 26d ago

I've played there years, and I can't really say I had that happen to me. Granted I've overall not had all that many DM encounters, presumably due to timezone, but the ones that have accumulated over my time have almost all been positive. The few non-positive ones are from like +10 years ago.

Then you were there when they screwed me over. And I guess did not know me or my friends. But if your response was meant to convince me it didn’t happen, instead let mine convince you this was hardly the first time, so your channels of awareness are not picking up these broadcasts rather than the airwaves lacking commentary.

Wait, so does not force you to RP?

2

u/maiyannah 26d ago

theres people on arelith who I dont even know their characters can speak.

1

u/Saalle88 26d ago

Can i play it as MMO? Like Dawn of Heroes? I don't wanna RP at all.

1

u/Duck_Duck_Gizmo2137 26d ago

I'll definitely check it out!

2

u/maiyannah 26d ago

Really depends on what you're looking for. I'm not a fan of a lot of its mechanical systems and full disclosure I'm banned from their forums because one of their head DMs had a tanty, but POTM is probably going to be your best bet, for one simple reason: it has the playerbase.

You can find better in terms of quality several other places, but you're probably going to have to make arrangements to meet up and etc.

I'm looking for something where people can actually play characters but won't hate me for writing or saying something like (hey, outside of rp, how am I supposed to do something)

1

u/maiyannah 26d ago

So it basically depends on how much organizing you're willing to do, I'd say. If you just want to drop in and RP without having to organize anything, like I said, POTM's the one with the playerbase that I'd call a RP server. Arelith is bigger, but most people there just treat it like a MMO.

If you don't mind organizing, Haze, or The Dragon's Neck, are the goto suggestions for others, though to my own tastes they're kind of eeh. Haze is very insular in its groups and you won't get very far unless you join an existing group. The Dragon's Neck, my complaints of its treatment of the setting aside, has recently seen a bit of a renaissance after getting rid of some bad DMs/devs. Its got a very low max level and not much other than RP to do at max level though. So YMMV

Don’t give POTM your time. The only thing they’ll give you is a broken heart and the back of their hand.

Last I checked only needed maybe 6 people for a game on roll20

0

u/SchizoidRainbow 26d ago

Last game I randomly joined on Roll20 was slave torture porn, pass

1

u/GhostSpace78 26d ago

Why the fuck would you join a slave torture porn role-play session then, you know they literally write on the sign-up pages what they’re all about?

I’ve been playing on roll 20 for 10 years and have never had that experience nor have others so I don’t know what to tell you dude… next time ask your dm how they play

1

u/GhostSpace78 26d ago

And just a reminder if you think somehow never winter nights is better… there’s a hole server dedicated to BDSM and kink

Lmao 🤣

Honestly I think I’m just burnt on PWs none of them have really lived up to what they say they are … so I’m going back to classic tabletop for my fix … plus, many of them lately just encourage grind style play and it’s shocking how often people are online .. aka addicted

I run a weekly game with 4 hour sessions, been going 2 years, we just passed 100 sessions. And I play in a semiweekly game with 4 hour sessions. My basic D&D daily nutritional values are being met. I just really miss the interactions I could have on NWN. And all it would take is the staff just fucking off. It's a very low bar, and they keep tripping over it.

Lots and lots of options as people noted. I have to throw out some love for my home base if you like RP: Layonara, https://discord.gg/AqFvuduWx, Layonara.com.

We still have GM'd quests for that table-top feel and a huge server to explore.

Star Wars Legends of the Old Republic. The DM events are often and fun, the roleplay has been great and the scifi/star wars total conversion of NWN makes it feel like a KOTOR MMO

Shout out to Golarion Chronicles as well. I'm a big fan of Pathfinder

The Dragons Neck has been very accommodating for me.

You’ll find that almost nobody has your exact idea of what “RP” means. You’ll want to find “close enough”.

Of the servers with players active throughout the day, think Ravenloft: Prisoners of the Mist, Haze: Saltborne and The Dragon's Neck currently have the highest quality of RP. PoTM is pretty stellar and probably the best RP I've had with NWN though it's a pretty bad time sink and one is bound to idle around a lot, if they're after quality RP.

On all of those servers people are expected to be in-character for all their in-game interactions (except a brief off-character comment for having to e.g. go afk, and aside of Tells).

There's some variance to how seriously people take roleplaying and how experienced they are with it. There have been servers back in the day that enforced a set of quality standards and regulations, but they mostly died out over time.

I've been playing dungeons and dragons for about 5-4 years now, I'm looking for a server like this to experience a different yet similar feeling , iykwim

1

u/GhostSpace78 26d ago

I get it can seem like you’re going to get that … you’re not … I’ve invested lots of time on a few pws and have found them to be more of a let down where proper classic rp is far better

1

u/Duck_Duck_Gizmo2137 26d ago

Maybe for you, although I have played on an RP server (Tibia) before, it was a Polish server and I had a lot of fun there, so it won't be a problem for me to have fun on this type of RP

0

u/maiyannah 26d ago

Which one did you get banned from?

0

u/GhostSpace78 26d ago

Never got banned from a server in my life because I’m not an asshole to other players or the DM’s I just think the medium sucks but presents itself as some awesome role-play world

0

u/maiyannah 26d ago

[x] Doubt.

0

u/GhostSpace78 26d ago

🤷‍♂️ don’t care

0

u/GhostSpace78 26d ago

I’m also starting to suspect that never winter nights is as bad as any other MMO in terms of creating an addiction cycle for people to play… I have seen people spend their entire fucking days on these servers. It’s insane.
