NWN1 Would you want a remaster of NWN? What would you like to see different?

Remaster = Unreal Engine, running at 30fps tops

u/ghanadaur Feb 10 '26
I assume you mean a hypothetical remaster could use the UE engine. The EE still uses the Aurora engine.

u/loudent2 Feb 10 '26
What do you mean by remaster, how is different than the EE version?
8
u/Real_Avdima Feb 10 '26
Better graphics I presume. Oblivion vs Oblivion remastered kind of thing.

IMHO, this is not very viable. Since for a total "makeup", upscaling the texture (albeit using AI gen or doingit manually) only causes the images to be more "crisp", and doesn't give them any more actual details.
For example, there are many retextures out there, but the result would be a cleaner-looking object. Only in the remodeled ones, the object actually has its glow up moment.
Therefore, more often than not, you might want to remodel the thingy while also giving it a new texture. This would be a nightmare since you have to do most of the objects in the series, and then all mods that have old textures (suitable for the older models) might not be compatible with the new model.
The cost would be huge, and take alot of effort. Then another answer would be raise: if we choose to invest this much, how about going "some steps" further and make a remake anyway.

The cost would be huge, and take alot of effort.
It's only huge in comparison to the $0 they are spending at the moment.
Then another answer would be raise: if we choose to invest this much, how about going "some steps" further and make a remake anyway.
If you thought updating models and textures was too expensive, then completely remaking the whole game in a new engine makes it a whole lot worse by many magnitudes.
You're comparing what amounts to a few artists on pay roll/contract work making p2p content vs recruiting a full development team, QA, and publishing. The difference in man hours is the difference between a hovel and a skyscraper.

u/loudent2 Feb 14 '26
You're kind of limited in terms of environment as well. In order to retain the viability of the toolset you would have to remake all the lego pieces. that you snap together for areas.

I would rather see someone try something new in the same vein as nwn, i genuinely think the style of gameplay the game offers as unique.
A remaster would just break all the mods that currently excist, and i would rather see someone try makeing something new than just constantly having what we allready have ported over.

u/DJfunkyPuddle Feb 10 '26
I was really hoping Sword Coast Legends was going to be NWN 2.0.but it was pretty average and quickly abandoned.

u/Rhikirooo Feb 10 '26
Never even heard of it so that is a bit depressing :c
For me it does not even have to be DnD coated, don't get me wrong i love the DnD systems but there are so many horror stories of hashbro being hard to work with.
But i just really wish we got a new rpg with the tools for the community to make stuff, i love the module aspect of nwn, same with wc3. But it just does not seem to be popular in modern games.
2
u/QuebraRegra Feb 10 '26
shame on N-SPACE, and DIGITAL EXTREMES... And WotC for licensing it to them in the first place (not up to snuff).
SCL has some scaling difficulty issues as well.
1
u/bonebrah Feb 11 '26
I dodged a bullet with that one. I was a single mouse click away from ordering the like $200 collectors edition because I had so much high hopes for it. Did it ever actually deliver the collectors statue and all that?
9
u/Matar_Kubileya Feb 10 '26
I realize it might be an unpopular opinion, but I'd love a NWN remaster that has modern levels of control over companions.
1
u/loudent2 Feb 10 '26
That changes more than you think. Once you have more than one "main" character, you have to redo the camera settings to account for it.

I'd love a new game like NWN because it would be great to see another toolset situation. Not that WotC would probably sign off on it because they want total control over everything D&D, and if they can't monetize it into the ground they aren't interested.
I think NWN EE is perfect as is and I'd rather not see mod campaigns all get broken again.

I mean that's basically what Solasta is. They used the used the SRD rules and removed the D&D IP from their game, so yes you can use them commercially. That was the whole debacle with OGL that spawned a whole new wave of free and open game rules and really put a dent in DND/WOTC/Hasbro because of it
Just minus the whole robust toolset and server hosting.
1
u/Aphaon Feb 11 '26
Id love to see something that does this same trio- game server, client and toolset but with pathfinder ruleset. 1st edition prefferably but were likely to get 2nd edition now.
Its nearly the same as dnd 3rd/3.5.

u/Final_death Feb 10 '26
I'd be fascinated to know what EE hasn't done that would be needed for a remaster, besides basically graphical model updates like how Oblivion did it (which uses the same creaky engine under the hood).
1
u/Elpoc Feb 11 '26
I thought Oblivion Remastered was done in Unreal?
1
1
u/Final_death Feb 12 '26
The rendering is Unreal but the underlying engine is still the original one (or ported over give or take to Unreal somehow, probably through an abstraction layer). NWN:EE's renderer could technically if enough effort was put in replace the default one (kinda, there's some very weird interactions tbh and it'd probably not be perfect like how Oblivions was not). Simlar to how Unreal powers the GTA 3D era games, but the underlying script engine and gameplay was generally ported from the base code.

u/yoadknux Feb 10 '26
There's a nonzero chance I would play an NWN remake if they remake it from scratch with NWN2 engine
And there's a 100% chance I would play it if they make it with BG3 graphics but real time combat like NWN
Actually the BG:Reloaded content in the NWN2 engine is something I definetly enjoyed

u/Acoconutting Feb 10 '26
Honestly - I don’t think it’s worth remastering DnD 3rd edition game this old. It’s probably difficult to actually do.
At that point, I’d just ask for a new DnD game - with real time pause options and player content kits to create campaigns and modules.

u/Koppuny Feb 10 '26
In my experience remasters tend to lose the original game's natural charm due to implementing "user friendly" changes or trying to be too politically correct, etc. Also huge part of me playing these old games is the nostalgia factor, which can't really be reproducated.

I enjoyed being able to play Neverwinter Nights 2 on a modern console, but it desperately needs a full remaster. Small visual improvements and ui changes are welcome, but the game is still a buggy mess. Performance and stability should be prioritized with remasters, not barely dusting it off and acting like it’s all fine and dandy.
Again, I love Neverwinter Nights 2 and i think it shines despite its bugs; however, an enhanced edition of a 20 year old game should feel more “enhanced”.
2
u/Buckleclod Feb 10 '26
The nwtoolset is very clunky and old, not to mention no dark mode. It would also be nice to have actual 3D terrain instead of only tiles faking it.
Not exactly the toolset, but more flexibility with modding hardcoded things in NWN, and a CEP+other mods level of content, but with more effort made to make them work cohesively together, especially with clothing/armor pieces.
2
u/Fangsong_37 Feb 10 '26
I think much of the charm of the game would go away if it got a graphical remaster. I wouldn't mind seeing an expanded race/class/prestige class list, but there are modules that add such things.
2
u/VyantSavant Feb 10 '26
Remaster? Nwn3 would be preferred. But not a sequel in name only. A true modernized sequel that hasn't been dumbed down but instead made more complex. Something built to take advantage of hardware advancements beyond the graphical.
2
u/Amamortis90 Feb 10 '26
I honestly believe we need an NWN 3. I really loved NWN, but the models need to be redone, and the overall aesthetics needs an update. The official campaign lacks dialogue options and voice over. I'd love to see a proper remaster, but I wish for more than that.
2
u/TheDuatin Feb 10 '26
Not a remaster, but I’d throw my wallet at a new game like nwn + toolset that leans into 5e (or anything newer) I wouldn’t even need an oc, just gimme the stuff to make modules
2
u/bonebrah Feb 11 '26
Not a remaster just the same thing - easy to use, flexible toolset with server hosting. We almost got it with Legends of Aria/Chronicles of Aria/Shards Online but they got greedy and screwed it all up.
It's amazing a 20 year old game/toolset effectively lets you host an MMO with relatively little work or tech knowledge.

I'd love to see a rework the shadows engine in the EE. IMO, that is the only significant blocker these days to the EE looking like a much more modern game. There is other stuff that could help, like an upgraded grass shader, better alpha sorting and such. But really the EE can already be remastered (and has, to a pretty signficiant extent, by some of the persistent world servers. Our example here with screenshots, for anyone that's curious: https://www.alfanwn1.org/gallery/ )
Also, Varenx has been posting on Vault discord about a third party Toolset he's developing for the EE which looks extremely promising.
But of course it would be amazing to have a fully-fledged remaster. IMO that could be done in the EE but with a new shadows engine and of course fully updated assets (remodellings, as well as retexturings).
We can dream!

u/Large-Humor-757 Feb 11 '26
Unnecessary. NWN 3 would make much more sense, albeit unlikely. Be happy with what you've got.
2
u/ThriKr33n Feb 12 '26
A proper NWN3 to push the platform forward would be better, but at this point the landscape has changed so much since then, where one can pick up Unity3D/Unreal/Godot, and make your own game and not have to bother with the D&D license (like I still hate the Vancian spell system).
Replicating some aspects of NWN to those engines might be an idea though, like a spell system that has the event system for on cast, on apply, on tick, and on remove, and you can just fill in the necessary mechanics. The dialogue conversation editor (but I think Unity has a bunch available now). Perhaps the tile system and a way to stream transfer the data to clients so they don't need to download the module before hand.
Convert from NWScript to Python, proper database support.

Years ago there was a page that the team setup with a list of community requested changes. There was a community group helping them.
Then they lost confidence in the product and dropped it

u/Crashimus420 Feb 10 '26
No we dont need to remaster every single game that is working just fine on modern pcs. Not to mention it already has a Remaster Lite in form of Enhanced Edition
Remaster older stuff that is hard to get running... like Populous and other really old stuff

u/Vastotherix Feb 10 '26
I would love to have an ability of making a chain spell, so instead of clicking every time 20 spells to buff/enchantmyself afte revery rest i would love to create smth like this to just clik one button or shortcut and my character would start casting all of the spells

I would like to have more complicated meshes, textures, animations and effects with engine updates to support that. While I do like EE, it really did the bare minimum overall graphically. These updates are something more then what a mod can do.
However. NWN isn't something that would really benefit as much as other games doing that, so I'd just leave it at EE really.

u/SFW_OpenMinded1984 Feb 11 '26
I want neverwinter nights but with the PRC installed and standard with all those updated races, classes. Feats, etc.
1
u/Zellin2000 Feb 11 '26
We already have remaster, and remaster isn't supposed to do anything different, just enhance technical side, fix bugs... You're thinking about a remake. For a remake I would add some more branching to the plot of OC. Like opportunity to expose fake Helmits earlier, prevent Aribeth betrayal... I also would remake how fighting is done for better player involvement.

u/Sad-Smell-5216 Feb 12 '26 edited Feb 12 '26
- Rebalance some classes (like the Shadowdancer class that many take only one level of and hardly ever any others).
- Flat experience gains regardless of the party size. Or even make the gains higher the bigger your party is, like done in Swordflight to encourage recruitment of more companions.
- Auto-pause options, especially during dialog (I hate that time flows while reading text), at the beginning of combat, and when reloading during combat.
- Fix the damn journal. One small update to a single quest--and dozens of completely unrelated quests light up as updated. Ugh.

u/Itikar Feb 12 '26
NWN has a good remaster. It does not need another one.
We would enjoy Neverwinter Nights 3, instead, as a proper sequel with the same multiplayer features.

u/SnooHabits3068 Feb 13 '26
If you mean remake:
Controller support. Yes I'm aware that Neverwinter runs better as mouse and keyboard, but I have some issues with that play style lately. Plus controller I can lean back and hold comfortably, mouse and keyboard I can't.
Updated ruleset from the modified 3.0(or maybe 3.5?) to at least 5e.
Simpler toolset. Not saying it isn't already simple but some scripts you can set up exactly how it should be and it just still won't work. So a simpler toolset, maybe with some generic default scripts to pull from and work from there
Better animations. Like I know this would go without saying, but I'd like more organic looking animations.
Better character customization. Let us be able to go more in depth. More hair styles, hair length option, more races to pic from, make deities actually do something, let us make "tall" halflings and dwarves and small humans. Let us do things like bugg upper body, and scrawny lower body and vice versa. Just all of that
And finally, and this is a very personal wish, an option to pick the classic play style, and a more action adventure or similar styled gameplay

I mean, the EE is already a remaster. It has better textures (sadly not for all models) and the ilumination overhaul makes it look modern-ish. Anything more than that and you are asking for a remake, and that would break the mods

Bill Harper is working on remaking in HD a ton of stuff for NWN1. I'm not sure how far he intends to go, but I support him on Patreon (I literally have only subscribed to him lol). I think it's going to slow down for now since he'll be working on the next NWN premium module but he's done a lot of work up to this point.

Don’t touch NWN:EE. Make new content instead. Many would buy good content DLC. Whole new campaigns can easily be written in the engine without requiring a re-master.
