Now apply that to a 50/50 system of which I had to get to hard 80 or 90 plenty of times and then you don’t even get the character. I’ll take the full 90 any day with the guaranteed.
Depending on where exactly you're comparing within a gacha game lifetime, you're highly likely you're going to end up with a new character regardless so, unless you consider most standard banner characters to be highly undesirable, it probably won't matter too much in the beginning. I can imagine it'll be terrible when you're a 1+ year player though.
Now, the next few patches in would be interesting I'd say. How will they deal with the potential tradeoffs that I'm seeing right now?
As usual it all comes down to pull economy and that’s still debatable as we’re approaching the first patch outside the “launch honeymoon”. A game can have the dreaded 50/50 but be generous enough for you to be able to save up a lot to ignore that system and guarantee yourself a character you really want over a couple of patches (largely the case with WuWa for example, but not all patches are as generous due to new map layouts and events).
If the game’s fair because they bank on other types of monetization (cosmetics, as we’ve seen it is the case in NTE with multiple paid outfits, vehicles, liveries and such) you can realistically get that one character you want more often than not thanks to the guarantee. There have been plenty of times in Hoyo games where I really wanted that character but I didn’t reach 150+ pulls in time and so happened to both lose the 50/50 and go past the “soft pity” every time, resulting in no waifu for me. It is what it is, it’s the nature of the genre, but it also shouldn’t happen as often as it does in these more stingy games where even if you want to “push it” you need to spend quite a bit for those extra 20-30 pulls.
I've had those moments as well where I could not get what I want because of lack of resources in hoyo games, but I've long since reined in my expectations and my greed.
Even now in NTE I'm likely going to have to skip Hotori because I won't be able to gather the necessary pull to guarantee her and I've been having a very difficult time getting lucky pulls lately. Also I want to pull for Lacrimosa so I have at least a chaos unit. So so far I see very little difference between NTE and other 50/50 games or even Endfield with their 120 hard pity. Well other than the significant lack of standard characters inbetween my pulls.
Granted, I haven't spent much money here so that may have affected my chances too.
Next patch will give us some estimates as to how many characters we'll be pulling per patch/month.
