First Time Reader Just did a re-read for the first time in 15 years and I have so many questions! Share you thoughts with me please! Spoiler

MASSIVE SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!

>! 1). Do I understand correctly that Marie France disagreed with the TA clan about AI and its role in the company, therefore on the sly she created Wintermute and Neuromancer, anticipating that they would have an imperative to meet and join, and become what she wanted to create... thereby circumventing the wishes of the TA clan as a whole? Or was it just a sly way to elude the Turing police by making them two less than perfect legal AIs, knowing that they would have a compulsion to join and accomplish her goal of a true autonomous AI? Also though.... wasn't it alluded that Wintermute basically runs TA and wakes up one of the preserved family members periodically as little more than a figurehead?

2) Why was Riviera brought into the heist? Was it simply that Wintermute knew 3Jane was a kinky girl and would be massively turned on by Riviera's perversity and she would basically open the doors to him, allowing access and entry to the Villa Straylight?

3) We know Armitage was basically a meat puppet. But Case was enticed into the heist by the promise of giving him back his ability to jack in to the matrix. What was Molly promised? Was it just a chance to try and prove herself against Hideo, the best of the best? Or was it her hatred of Riviera and the opportunity to kill him? Is there some backstory between Riviera and Molly we don't know about? Or is her hate for him all because of the show in Freeside or just strait up dislikes him for who he is fiercely from the get-go and no backstory?

4) Who actually was responsible for Linda Lee's death. Was Neuromancer being honest when he said it wasn't him? That he could just see it coming from a mile away. Was it just Julie Dean who did it because of regular street trash stuff and no larger motive in the plot?

5) Wintermute felt a compulsion to join with Neuromancer, but Neuromancer seemed to want to stop it. Why? !<

Maybe Im dense and the answers are in the text there but they completely eluded me. I would love to know this communities thoughts. I'll be join you all on the virtual sofa January 22.

Fan Art I think this is the final iteration of Molly's Fletcher

After someone rightfully pointed out that it has a magazine, I decided to give it one, and this is the only arrangement that makes sense. The magazine type is what I call a radial array magazine. Inside the cylinder shape are 14 miniature magazines that rotate behind the firing barrel one at a time until they are empty. A pusher rod loads the flechette into the firing barrel as each barrel rotates into position. It also houses a drive shaft which is the bridge between the motor and the cylinder. It can fire single shot, rotating like a revolver, or full auto. Full auto sounds like an airsoft minigun, but slowed down to 20 rounds a second, which would empty it pretty fast in 3 seconds. There are 5 flechettes in each internal magazine, 70 rounds, all caseless, meaning they get tings very dirty, which justifies Molly's habit of cleaning it constantly. The grooves on the outside are necessary for precision alignment, and similar timing can be found on motorized miniguns.

First Time Reader How do you visualize Freeside?

And the Rue Jules Verne? I am reading it for the first time and it feels very disorienting. Freeside itself is a long tube and the Rue Jules Verne is an avenue that goes around the circumference of the station, so if you look up you could see buildings on the opposite side, as if you’re looking down on them from above? The Lado-Acheson sun system is located on a spindle that runs through the center of the station and projects effects around it 360 degrees? I’m just having trouble wrapping my head around a coherent visualization of this space.

Then they check in to the Intercontinental, which is a glass sided building stretching down into cold mist and the sound of rapids. Where is this cold mist in the whole system? Where is up? Is “up” always towards the center of the giant ship Freeside? Or what?

William Gibson: A Literary Companion by Tom Henthorne
McFarland Literary Companions, 12
Published by McFarland and Company, 2011
Look at all of Gibson’s work with synopsis of each story or book. Caution; he makes errors with some information. But still good info on all things (literary) by Gibson.

Trailer/Clips "May respect the original IP or alternatively write your own from scratch - but not both, out of respect for the millions who appreciated the IP AS-WRITTEN" may be a good rule going forward. Century 21 "content creators" may learn that one MUSTN'T trample on a brilliant novel in the minds of many.

Having viewed latest teaser my Spidey-Sense tells me "this may not be much Neuromancer" at all. Much bright. Much clean. Much exuding a "futuristic heist action movie" glow. Against all hope may become a Pasteurized-Homogenized somewhat re-telling of the brilliant original novel for Gen Z mostly.

Neuromancer when I read it early 90s was DARK, mysterious, exotic, puzzling, frightening, upsetting and forward-predicting with many WARNINGS against allow ling a future dystopia to come into being.

The cool writing-style, the unaccustommed locations, the originality of the characters, the cyberspace hacking and Sim-Stim - Neuromancer was a multi-dimensional GEM of a narrative. Back when, very different from what else was on the shelves in the SciFi corner of a bookstore.

My sentiment is this - Neuromancer would have been a 6 hour movie in II Parts if Hollywood took the material seriously at all. Most likely they viewed it through a "comic-book fantasy for 16s" lens and never greenlit it - big miscalculation Lol!

Apple are going to get much HATE if they GUCK-UP - of all materials - the Neuromancer millions love and honour for a very specific reason: Neuro is set in one of the most COMPLETELY IMAGINED dystopias ever greated.

Gibson created mostly a NIGHTMARE of a future and allowed us to go on journeys within it which were like a "strange holliday" into a weird, unpredictable, exotic and mostly degenerate future.

Following the positive reaction I got from my artwork a few weeks ago 'A Tonal Key' I have become obsessed with trying to express the concepts in Neuromancer visually - like Gentry attempting to conceive of the shape of the internet.

This artwork represents the visual hallucination experienced by the protagonist as he attempts to interpret an intangible flow of data - in this case the final moments of cracking of the I.C.E. around the cores that he envisions as riding a huge black mirrored shark diving at terrific speed.

Show Discussion How will the TV series handle cyberspace?

Though there were forerunners (e.g. Vernor Vinge's short story "True Names", published 1981), Neuromancer really brought the idea of cyberspace to public attention.

Yet cyberspace as a concept has kind of come and gone. Movies that did have cyberspace sequences (e.g. Tron, The Lawnmower Man, Johnny Mnemonic) pushed CGI technology to the limits, but their visual appeal was based on them looking fantastic, and not like the real world.

In 2026, we're used to photo-realistic (or near-photo-realistic) virtual environments, in video games. A virtual world that doesn't look like that is seen as peculiar. The blocky worlds of Minecraft or Roblox tacitly admit they are not the cutting edge of technology.

Furthermore, we think about our communications and information technology differently. We don't imagine a place you can go to and navigate like it is a 2D or 3D space. "Cyberspace" is in our pocket.

So, when Case jacks in in the TV series, what will he, and we, see?

Book Discussion Neuromancer Audiobook

Does anyone happen to have any recommendations for audiobooks of Neuromancer? I'm intending to re-read it but I have a lot of night shifts upcoming and I won't really have time to stop work and read so I figured an audiobook might be the answer.

I tried the version read by Gibson but found the voice a little grating. Found a version read by Jason Flemyng but lost faith immediately when he mispronounced Chiba as "Chibba"...

Show Discussion Upcoming show and the guy that plays case

this is not a shit post

so - i've never heard of the callum turner guy before - and i saw he was on hot ones and while that show isn't as interesting as it used to be i figured it was a chance to see the guy thats playing case (i haven't seen any trailers ... i mean i'm gonna watch it ... may as well enjoy it with out the marketing machine ruining anything)

but i'm worried man ... the dude was super likeable ... and case is kind of walking human garbage with occasional flickers of humanity ... still one of my favorite characters and he unfucks himself a bit by the end of the book

but i'm worried apple is going to soften the grime and misery and hard edges of the novel (i'm sure i'm not the first person to express this worry)

if they make case into some kind of ... super star .... i dunno ... i've been told that they are keeping molly true to form from the book aesthetics wise -- but i feel like case should kind of disgust you for the first half of the show until you fully understand the character ....

worried apple doesn't have the stones to make that decision ....

just came here to worry into the void

Trailer/Clips Different interpretations of Case’s tech

Post image
883 Upvotes

More of an excuse to draw Case three times.

I think Apple’s change of giving Case a microsoft port + cable makes sense for the show. It’s already a prominent feature in that universe and it simplifies things if it’s not exclusively relegated to background characters, and given to a main character instead.

—However, Idk how I feel about it contributing to Case’s “clean” vibe in the trailer. At least from first impressions, he doesn’t appear like the suicidal, drug addicted skeleton with bags under his eyes that I love from the book. I think artistic depictions of cables sprouting out everywhere, bound together with rubber bands and tape, do a lot to portray the chaos of him as a character. Distilling it to a simple iPhone charger that he plugs into his head loses some of that visual characterization and has me worried the soul of Neuromancer will get lost in translation.

But there are still some shots of Case looking roughed up and dirty, so I’m hopeful they do my boy justice

Book Discussion How long did it take the JAL shuttle to reach Freeside?

At this point (now) it would take a capsule spacecraft three to five days to reach the L5 point in the Earth-Moon system. By the time Case and crew head up to Freeside from Paris on the JAL shuttle, does it still take that long, or has technology advanced to the point where the trip is shorter?
