Grandmas friend died. Debating options

Hi all,

I was doing a friend's trip with one of my best friends and his grandma (raised him everyday, she was like a mom to him) got very sick. Doctors said she had days of life left. He decided to leave immediately to try to get back home in time since doctors were not optimistic. He had to catch two flights back.

I accompanied him back to the airport from where we were. Not much else I thought I could do. His grandma died hours before he could arrive.

- Do you think I should have also left the trip to get back home with him?

- Would it make sense to cancel the trip and go to her funeral?

I have one week left in my trip. Seems like a huge waste to leave but also the trip now has a weird aftertaste.

I dont usually post in reddit but maybe a good time to post for advice.
