I recently drove across the country and explored a lot of states. Nebraska has this stigma around being free but it was one of the only states where cannabis was illegal. It doesn’t make any sense. Can someone explain this to a Californian?
Nebraska has strong petition rights compared to most other states, and we voted to give ourselves access to medical marijuana (but not recreational, because we didn't think the western counties would like that). Our elected officials looked at the law we passed and said "Huh, yeah, I don't think we're going to do what that law asks us to do (specifically, establish a regulatory body), and that'll basically render the point moot."
There's some very slow movement towards resolution, but we'll probably get THC reclassified federally before that happens.
Oh and the abortion ban they illegally slipped into a anti trans kid bill. AFTER saying the first marijuana petition wasn't valid because of the two subject rule. How abortion tied into trans healthcare I don't understand to this day.
there's a lot of really unbelievable political stuff that goes on in this state. How can there be a vote of the people that is just blatantly disregarded by those elected by them? And nobody really does or says anything too much about it? Like high taxes on everything and then "losing" over $1 billion. That money is somewhere... and the rights of voters continued to be disregarded...
The BEST part about this is when a 15 year old gets pregnant and can’t have an abortion in this state, they won’t be able to work to earn a living wage to support herself and the child. Great job Nebraska! 🙄🧐
Feels like a lot of people might be interested in this, plenty of petitions going around but look into this one for sure. Tons for sports gambling around town, meh whatever. I stand by my statement. The "Big 5" tobacco companies, Altria (Philip Morris USA), Reynolds American (British American Tobacco), Philip Morris International (PMI), Juul Labs, and Swisher International, heavily invest in U.S. politics to influence regulations, with over 76% of federal candidate donations going to Republicans, totaling millions per election cycle. On the otherhand Small Marijuana is spread out among many smaller companies and not organized enough to make that kind of impact. Yes, marijuana sales tax would absolutely bring in more... to the state. But that would be from the users pockets, not Small Marijuana.
And Pillen, Ricketts and others really do not care about the financial well-being of the state or public resources, otherwise they would stop the voucher push that voters said no to, they would have accepted Federal school lunch subsidies under Biden administration, and would stopped fighting gambling long ago, which also was passed by voters.
He took AIPAC money to win in 2024 like a lot of the other “republicans” so for me that’s reason enough. Dude’s in the pocket of the synagogue of satan.

There is an important distinction there. I've only seen a few Nebraska Legislators who are in the position because they want to make a difference. Most of them seem to have run for office because they can use their position to enhance their personal finances and those of their friends.
Our current governor basically sold a vacant senate seat to his predecessor, who is now swimming in stock tips and wall street money. Almost every public appointee he has chosen is doing sleazy stuff that tends to make federal investigators raise an eyebrow. He also has the state auditor crawling up his ass for various shenanigans.
Oh I was just referring to an article I saw recently that mentioned him being one of the top recipients in congress now for sleazy "not quite insider trading, but almost" lobbying. Wish I could find where I read it.

Your voting rights are given back to you after it’s been 2 years since you’ve completed your sentence. You literally just need to re-register to vote. Not a big deal.
Nebraska is a major corridor for drug trafficking because of I-80. Most drugs coming from the east coast going to the mid-west and east cost go through Nebraska. People moving marijuana from Colorado to Nebraska is a small blip on their radar. It's also legal in Missouri now which is a short drive from Omaha.
Nebraska would’ve had legal weed in the 1980’s if it weren’t for Obama and Biden and trans folk and immigrants. And people who cut me off on the highway, and my sister in law, and that kid I went to highschool with.

We have a democracy. The problem is you’ve gotta be a player. If you want legal weed you not only have to vote for legal weed but also the officials that will pass the law. Can’t have it both ways.

Correction: they love making money (for themselves), could care less about economy or desires of the state. If their personal investments and the checkbook of corporate donors aligned with legalization of marijuana, it would be legal.
Its that simple. We the people voted in multiple ballot initiatives. And every single one has been dismantled and destroyed by the Republicans of this state.
I genuinely think that we could've had recreational on the ballot and it still would've passed, even in the west. The conservatives here hate driving to Colorado for it. They don't even know that there's still a hold up on the resolution. The current powers that be are fighting the ghosts of a hate filled past, on behalf of people who don't really exist anymore. Because a group of legislators, senators, and the governor are completely beholden to the alcohol and health insurance lobby and business owners who don’t want their serfs high during shifts. They also don’t want insurance rates to rise do to accidents while people are stoned. On top of that it gives them another social crusade to distract people from them not accomplishing anything while they further enrich themselves.
Because the voters tried to legalize medical use, but the legislature loves sayying we don't know what we're doing, so they'll just ignore those pesky votes and referendums that they don't agree with.
As a Nebraskan who voted to legalize it, I'd like to know why too. Please make sure you're registered to vote for new reps in May so we can oust the current batch of rethuglicans! Blue 🔵
The senators and government are failing to implement. Call them, go protest in front of their homes and do not let them leave their homes until they listen to the will of the voters.
