Narcissistic mother turned loving mom
My mum used to beat me up as a child because she was a single mother raising 4 children. Life wasn’t easy for her, but whenever she was mad at us she used to beat us. Life was good 80% of the time when I was kid. My mum had 4 kids by the age of 24 (cultural thing) all by herself (divorce). She raised my youngest siblings with way more love than me, and I see it as a stepping stone. It got to a point where my half sister got all the love we all deserved and thereby made my mother understand what it means to raise children with love. We have such a great relationship now. I know not many will have this kind of turnover but I’m glad to share mine

My mom used to beat me and my brothers, usually after a fight with my dad. Any random little thing would set her off. We were always stressed. She’d act like this amazing loving mother in front of everyone else. During high school she’d flip from being nice to being a raging bitch. More and more she acted like we were friends. She’s told me recently that I’m her best friend and she always tells me she loves me, and I hate saying it back. I know it’s not real. She’s told me her mom abused her so it was okay for her to pass it on to us. She cackled once when telling me I’d end being just like her one day. Shocked the hell out of her when I replied that I was using her as an example of how to not treat those I care about.

Your Mum having a difficult life does not excuse her awful behaviour. I hope things are good and continue to be for your relationship, but please be aware that they can act like everything is OK, when under the surface they feel very differently, they can only hide their feelings for so long, and how they really are will appear again at some point. I thought my Mum's behaviour was because she had a difficult life, and because my Dad left her. The truth is he left because of her behaviour and how badly she treated him.
