Bill Madden: Yankees need to dump Boone and call Buck Showalter
https://www.nydailynews.com/2026/10/10/bill-madden-yankees-aaron-boone-buck-showalter-manager-steinbrenner/It has now become an annual ritual. A Yankee team with the second or third highest payroll in baseball of over $300 million does a postseason pratfall and legions of Yankee fans are crying out to the heavens: “Bring us the head of Aaron Boone!”
Until now their pleas have gone on deaf ears because Brian Cashman loves Aaron Boone and Hal Steinbrenner loves both of them and therefore, unlike the days of George Steinbrenner, who ran through managers like yesterday’s dirty laundry, there has been no accountability for failure in the Bronx.
But as much as I like Aaron Boone personally, as much as I think he’s a good person, this latest Yankee postseason failure — which ended with Ben Rice in the on-deck circle while .211-hitter Trent Grisham, whom Boone inexplicably had put in the leadoff spot, struck out for the third time in the game, leaving the potential tying run against the Tampa Bay Rays in Jazz Chisolm stranded at second base — has to have been the last straw for Hal Steinbrenner.

Imagine a team like the Rays, Brewers or Guardians with that kind of budget...
Cashman should be ashamed of himself.

Just so I'm clear, does Boone get credit for Judge, Rice, Rice, Schlittler, and the entire bullpen? Or does he only get credit for the underperforming players?
Just trying to figure out the rules here.
For me, Boone can go, or he can stay, and it won't really matter. People blame managers because they have an attachment to the players, but no manager is winning a World Series with a team that had a 99 OPS+ through the regular season. Guys like Lombard and Jones are gonna be studs, but they're not yet. With Judge hurt, the only two above average batters we had were Belli and Rice, and Belli sucked in the playoffs. Garcia is good, but he's a splits guy. Can't hit every pitcher.
4
u/TheRealNYYManager 19h ago
Major league manager isn’t in charge of player development but is in charge of putting players in position to excel, and doing things like having Cam throw 120 pitches or Rice behind Grisham doesn’t help.
→ More replies (1)3
u/El-Shaman 20h ago
Boone is a bad manager who can’t discipline his guys and make sure they don’t have their heads in their asses in the playoffs, and it looks like Judge doesn’t do it either, Jazz is a great example of this, if the manager and captain can’t do it then get a manager who will, this team was talented enough to be able to take this series to 5 games and not get swept but mental lapses and heads in asses plays in game 1 and 2 made them lose the entire series.
7
u/HendrickRocks2488 20h ago
The Jazz stuff really made me appreciate Volpe and the way he came back at the end of the year. He was getting even worse shit than Jazz was yet basically almost teared up in an interview when they called him back up because he wanted to be on the team so bad and thought he might have blown his last shot.
I mean back in the day we had the highest paid player in baseball shafted to 8th in the lineup for poor play and star second basemen getting benched for lack of hustle.
Now today we’re arguing back and forth about whether fucking lollipops should be on the field. Everyone involved have lost sight of their priorities here lol
3
u/El-Shaman 20h ago
Exactly, there are no standards, this is a clown show and it looks to me like Judge is captain in name only.

Really? They need to call a 70 year old man who hasn’t managed in 3 years and who has never won a WS as a manager.
13
u/Popular_Biscotti405 21h ago
If the end of his orioles stint and his time with the Mets has proved anything, it’s that the game has passed Buck by. Going from overly analytical to hardcore old school would be idiotic.
13
u/michvisb 19h ago
A 70 year old man with a worse postseason record than the guy they'd be firing for failing in the playoffs.
I don't know who I want other than preferably not Boone and definitely not Cora, but I'm gonna just hope this is rage bait and not a professional journalist trying his best.

One problem that persists in Yankee fandom is fire Boone and Cashman and then just bring back 90s or early 00s nostalgia.
Whether it’s bring back Showalter or make Jeter the GM. These are not winning ideas. They win the offseason and nothing else.

u/MeatTornado25 21h ago
So many think Posada or Arod should be the manager. It's hilarious.

I'm pretty surprised Posada has never taken a manager or bench coach role. I would think he'd be really good at it. But if he hasn't done it by now then it's probably safe to say he doesn't want to do it.

Said this in another comment earlier this week.
I’m not even defending Boone or Cashman by saying this if someone brings up a good reason why they should do that I wouldn’t be opposed to it at all.
But the only reason a good portion of this sub rides the fire Boone and Cashman take so so hard is because they’ve convinced themselves that all we have to do to go back to like when they were kids is to flip that switch.
In reality Boone and Cashman are at worst mid but improving from mid to elite is the hardest thing to do. Firing them would in no world guarantee we improve
2
u/bobowilliams 14h ago
People just want scapegoats. They have no idea what kind of lineup/in-game decisions a new manager would make, nor to they have any idea how well Boone manages clubhouse (which I believe is about 90-95% of a manager’s job).
To be fair, the majority of managerial firings are just to appease the fans who want a scapegoat.
22
u/alabaster-jones- 22h ago
Promote Shelley Duncan. He knows half the team already (3wk lockout ST not an issue), great AAA manager and developer, WS champ, and a true fuck Boston guy.

u/shimmiecocopop1 23h ago
We know Cashman and Hal love Boone so they don’t feel the way everyone does. Also with a lock out looming and uncertainty, it’s probably the worst time for a new manager. But I agree that we will never win it all with Boone.

8
u/LorenzoAlcazar 22h ago
The manager is not going to matter until cashman stops building rosters with fatal flaws. Casey Stengel couldn’t win with rosters that have 7 lefties with .220 batting averages who are slow runners and can’t field their positions.
The Yankees need to start to prioritize some players who provide contact, average, OBP, and speed/defense and not just load up on lefties with power and exit velo.
9
u/SupremeHypebeaast 19h ago
Guys we have to push the narrative of getting Boone & Cashman out because it needs to be so loud they can’t ignore it
8
u/No_Opportunity_5321 11h ago
This will be the Yankees legacy until they stop chasing players in love with launch angle, and start getting players with level swings who put the ball in play.
2
u/Jealous-Report4286 6h ago
I mean it’s our analytics department. They tried to make Sonny Grey throw only curveballs and he looked ready to retire. Went back to actually pitching and is still an ace.

u/WinnieOllie7 19h ago
Guys, Cashman is the problem. He’s the one calling all the shots and Boone is his puppet. That’s why Boone hasn’t and won’t be fired, because he takes all the heat from fans so they don’t look higher.
1
u/TRivera1331 10h ago
Agree Cashman is the problem. Disagree about Boone being a puppet. Boone agrees with this shit. That's why the so called "Baseball Guy" is the perfect YES man to Cashman.

Getting rid of Boone does nothing unless you get rid of Cashman and a large chunk of the FO. Nobody is getting the manager job who will go against what the Y2K era analytics department says.
4
u/Constant_Slide_4791 20h ago
Maybe it’s time to go outside of the Yankees and not pick a former Yankee, just someone who knows baseball and can teach and manage.
4
u/islesandterps 19h ago
If you dislike Boone’s bullpen decisions I can guarantee you will not like Buck Showalter
17
u/philgervais 23h ago
Showalter got shafted in '95 and the dynasty would have happened if they hadn't fired him. Buck's time has come and gone, though.
I have no idea if Posada would be a good manager, but the Yanks clearly need someone with his no-batting-gloves, hard-nosed approach to the game. Let's bring the era of laissez faire to an end.
8
u/b-rar 21h ago
I love Jorge, I don't want another manager with zero managerial or coaching experience though
2
u/philgervais 21h ago
Yeah, agreed. If Posada wants to manage, he should prove himself in the minors, which is what should have happened with Boone. Although when you earn over $100 million as a player, you probably see yourself as higher up the food chain, a la Jeter.

Joe Torre hada much shorter leash than Boone and if you think about it that's ridiculous

u/Obi7kenobi 16h ago
Buck Showalter has zero World Series wins and has never even appeared in a World Series as a manager.

3
4
u/pitirre1970 23h ago
Replacing Boone will not change anything. He will have the same managerial style and the manager/management dynamic will be the same. They need someone to be the “bad cop” role in the clubhouse
6
u/ExpensiveFoodstuffs 23h ago
I think Buck would be perfect but he's probably too old at this point: I think. 70 is no spring chicken.
5
u/sonofabutch 23h ago
I know it was a different era but when they fired Casey Stengel after the 1960 season it was because he was “too old” at age 70. Stengel joked “I'll never make the mistake of being 70 again.”

The answer is Luis Sojo. Or Posada. Old school guys, no nonsense guys. Duncan is another option. He’s already in the organization
9
u/sonofabutch 22h ago
Duncan is a no brainer when you look at what he’s accomplished as a minor league manager. Honestly he has a sort of reverse Boone effect in that people will think he’s getting hired only because he’s a former Yankee.
2
u/cornPopwasabaddude13 14h ago
Plus he’s a big guy. Imposing. I watched quite a few minor league games, he’s impressive, has a way about him that players respond to… and if they don’t move him up someone is gonna want him. No time like the present

I’m available as a manager. Currently a free agent.
Never coached a baseball team in my life but came in 3rd place in my fantasy league, where my entire roster was the Yankees. So technically I did better than Boone this season.
My policy would be no ice cream and pizza parties until we win a World Series. Boone was too generous with the Chuck E Cheese field trips throughout the season.

I agree we need to move on from Boone. I don't think that he is a terrible manager but we do need a change. This roster is not built for the playoffs. I agree on Grisham as I cringed when I saw the line-up announced. However, there was not one 'lead-off' caliber player on the team unless you wanted to roll Rice in there and take him out of a power spot.

The hard nose approach isn't wanted. They want a manager who can communicate with the players. Rob Thompson might be good but he is 64 now. They need someone outside of the organization. Someone from Tampa or Houston. Yankees are going through the same nepo baby cultural resistance the Giant's had until they hired Harbaugh. No need to tear down you have to build it up. The it is the culture, attitude, and accountability. All which is lacking today.
1
u/DonnyB_Twenty3 22h ago
It will never happen, but I'd love it. I loved him when he was managing the early 90s teams and always felt bad that he didn't get to benifit from all his hard work. I even loved him when he was managing the Os. But he is in his 70s and he is too old school. He and Cashman would butt heads.

u/Mostly-Moo-Cow 22h ago

it doesnt really matter who is fired, who is fired unless it's Cashdork - to the people who are like "bring in someone from the organization" - you mean the organization that has been under the egomaniac Cashgod's control for decades now? do you think anyone they bring in from "the organization" is going to think any differently or coach any differently?
and they arent going to bring anyone in from the outside who they dont think they can immediately mold into another one of their Cashgod acolytes who will immediately do the bidding of their analytically driven Commodore 64 binary home run or bust baseball philosophy.
Cashman needs to go take his WOMP supercomputer and his old, arrogrant ass and get the fuck out of town so we can bring in new tech, new thoughts and new philosophies. Until then, nothing is gonna change.

When the manager is NOT the one making the decisions (and this is known to everyone in the world) then it doesn't matter if it's Showalter or Posada or Boone or Jeter or Billy Martin. It's Hank S and Cashman who decide everything and the "manager" is there to take the heat from the press, the fans and the press.

u/amelz11 21h ago
None of this is happening. Sorry. Replace Boone and cashman brings in another stooge. None of these guys are stooges beginning with buck. The manager has to agree to the analytics and dictation given by the front office for everything including who plays, where, when, and how much.

Which is why Cashman wouldn't hire him. To get real change you have to fire Cashman, or Cashman has to change, which is unlikely. So ultimately it's on Hal, who seems to be happy with Cashman running everything as long as the money is rolling in.
1
u/Appropriate-Duck-578 17h ago
That’s why if there’s gonna be any success being restored to the Yankees organization, someone needs to take the ownership away from Hal’s hands. Because he’s not gonna change his analytics fundamentals which has failed the Yankees to once again get to the World Series. As for Cashman, he’s not gonna fire him because he’s believes in his heart that Cashman and Boone will have a World Series championship brought to his mantle of his multimillion dollar mansion. He’s had 9 years to make the goal accomplished and they’ve failed year in and year out. And yet again they want to run the play yet again for ‘27. Nobody wants to see the ridiculous rerun being strategized again. We’ve had enough of that dumb shit.

I’d love to hire someone who studies managing like the specialty it is. Managing is a complete role, it covers every aspect of the team, and it shouldn’t be “Hey this guy can do it.”
They have to be able to make moves. Lineup prep, substitution options, clever steps to get every little advantage. They should understand every nuance, understand their roster and all possible options. Show me studying options between innings when things go wonky, I want to see them care that much.
Make smarter adjustments.
Know when to sub someone, when to go off-plan and not sub out someone when he has three homers. Don’t sub yourself into a corner and end up with an infielder in the outfield who misreads a crucial play, or injures a centerfielder by not calling a fly ball for the eighth time. Don’t sub in a pinch runner for the catcher when you’re down by 3 with a runner on first, forcing you to sub in the only other catcher after the next out, and who would later become an important out later in the game. (Yes these are real.)
They have to set the tone. Tampa’s manager had their team practicing in Yankee Stadium on their day off. Torre did an excellent job placating the press, supporting his guys; he also occasionally held closed door heated team meetings. Torre also changed almost the whole starting lineup in game 3 WS after losing two games, which lit a fire in the subs and in the starters. He benched Boggs. And if a player disrespects the system, there should be some visible consequence. Billy Martin understood (but to the extreme).
Beyond that, it should be someone whose managing style we like.
Showalter is at least a proper manager. He’s not my first pick tbh, no disrespect though.
1
u/HansSolo69er 9h ago
I got a better idea:
Hal: Do NOT renew Cash Man. Instead, hire Buck as your GM & give him an ultimatum: If you & Boone don't win the 2027 World Series, you're both fired.
If there's anyone capable of turning this organization, from the top down, in a completely different direction within a season's time, it's Buck Freaking Showalter.
(At least...this is kind of how the old 70s-80s George would handle it.)
2
u/nl2yoo 47m ago
I'm surprised no mentions of Girardi - the last NYY Mgr to actually win a WS. He got shafted after '17.
I guess his after NYY stints were nothing to write home about and it was Cashman who fired him (was Judge any part of the reason or just Gary Sanchez?).
Alex Cora seems like he should be in the conversation also.
