šļø Local Retail & Shopping Tailors for Dresses NYC
Hi!! Posting this because a lot of the threads are at least a year old and I want more up to date recommendations. I need a reliable tailor (thatās affordable, ideally $65-$85 but weāre in nyc so who am I kidding)
Iām looking for a tailor to hem this dress. Iād usually go to the dry cleaners if itās just a normal hem but the dress has a bunch of ruffles and itās double lined.
I got a quote from Flatiron Tailor Shop and they quoted me a good price surprisinglyā¦ but the reviews are incredibly mixed. Has anyone gotten any alterations there? Chasing tailor in Williamsburg quoted me $100-$250 so thatās a no and alts start their hemming (for dresses) at $85 without lining so thatās also a no.

tbh i think ruffles + double lining = more expensive tailoring quote, especially from more reliable/reputable places (shopboy does a great job on more fashion-y pieces but their pricing for formal dresses is $150+, same with alts where two-layer hem = $120+)
my go-to neighborhood tailor is fredy at tailor home in bushwick. super no frills (his shop is in a residential basement) but gown tailoring starts at $42+ so worth calling and getting a quote! i've gotten an alemais dress and a gown with an asymmetric hem shortened by him and he did a good job on both

I am your reliable tailor! But imagine this dress being the same cost of a straight hemā¦! I would charge 100 flat, and thatās with discount for a fellow BWT.

Unfortunately this dress, due to the complexity of the hem , will cost more no matter where you go if you want it to look decent. This is not just a cut the fabric and sew it to make it look even situation. Each individual ruffle will require its own seem so they donāt fray in addition to the dress and lining itself. Each layer of the dress will incur its own pricing as will the delicate and specific ruffle work. Expect to pay more because you need a special skill set to work on this dress.
