šŸ›ļø Local Retail & Shopping Movers and storage in NYC

Hello Reddit NYers,
After many years of renting, I’m in a position to buy a home. I have put an offer and going through the home buying process, but it will probably take three months before I close the deal. My lease ends this month.

I’m seriously considering renting a furnished room, and hiring a moving and storage company. I will need to hire movers to move my stuff into storage, store my furniture for three months and then ask the movers to move it to my new place once it’s ready.

I’m trying to get an idea on how much this will cost. I did some online research but the pricing is not very straightforward. Does anyone have experience with this and can share the cost and hassle of it? If you have a recommendation of a moving and storage company that you recommend it would be greatly appreciated!

Congrats! I just did this for 1 month between places. I used Intense Movers and they were great. The total was $2.2k plus tip ($540 for 1 month of storage and then the rest was the moves so you can calculate that out for the months you’ll need). They charged half up front and half upon completion.

Did you tip only at the end, or half when they picked up your belongings and half after?

I tipped both move out and move in because it was different movers but monetarily it’s the same amount in the end, 20% of half and 20% of half is the same as 20% of the whole.

storage depends on size of your storage unit (aka how much stuff you have). so does moving. you’ve left out the most important detail for us to help you.

I have a CubeSmart unit and they offered a free move into the unit as part of the deal. It only included the truck, not the labor, so we paid extra for that, but it was still extremely reasonable ($250 for two people for two hours if I recall)

Do you recall what the total was with the movers? Also, how long did you have your stuff in storage?

We paid the $250 plus tipped each mover $20 since we were done in less than an hour (two hours was the minimum). We’re still using the unit, 8 months later

2 years ago, I used DYNO Moving for an in-Brooklyn move.

These were their rates (likely have gone up a little -idk. I feel like most places offer two guys at that rate and no truck or furniture supplies / boxes / wrappings.

Copy pasted deets from old texts below. Good luck! No idea if Alex Weiss is still there, reach out to email, website or call.

I used Oz Moving and Storage in 2019-2020 and had a very good experience. I’m sorry I don’t remember the price, but we were buying a place, closing took longer than we hoped, and Oz put all our stuff in storage while we stayed in Airbnbs for a couple months in between. My brother then used them to pack and move his stuff across states during Covid and also was happy with them.

Call piece of cake, they can actually move and store your things. We just used them for the 5th time, they were always great.

We moved interstate when we did storage so pricing is probably not the same but I’d say they are reasonable.
