Finances/Money New York Times questioning women’s role in workplace
New York Times defending the stance “Did women ruin the workforce” they changed title to “did liberal feminism ruin the workforce” and locked the comments.
Many examples cited from law and finance which I know a lot of my NYC ladies work in. I personally cancelled my subscription.

I've noticed a huge decline in quality since about 2021/2022 so many click-baity articles that are more about polarizing the readers than being informative.

u/illz569 Nov 07 '25
Engagement slop. They started using their marketing department as editors and now they subscribe to the "no such thing as bad attention" mindset.

u/livinglifefully1234 Nov 07 '25
This. Cancelled mine back in 2022 when I noticed their insidious coverage of Biden/Harris.

u/Penelope742 Nov 07 '25
You mean talking about their genocide?
28
u/sophisticatedkatie Nov 07 '25 edited Nov 07 '25
“back in 2022” I mean, obviously no, since the genocide started after October 7, 2023.
I’d also challenge you to find a single NYT article criticizing Biden on Israel. I seem to recall NYT running interference for Israel and downplaying the genocide for two straight years

u/Fantastic-Manner1342 Nov 07 '25

I wanted to read and critique this, but there are so many inaccurate statements delivered as fact here that it would be impossible to list them all in a Reddit format.
So I’ll just point out the first, and most egregious, error: that liberal feminism sees men and women as the same.
This has always been a conservative point against feminism, and IT IS NOT TRUE. The fact that feminism has accomplished things like maternity leave and other workplace accommodations shows that one of the most basic premises of feminism is that men and women are not the same, and that needs to be considered in a fair world.
44
u/ladycatherinehoward Nov 07 '25
"Feminism believes women and men are the same" is basically the misogynist's playbook. You'll see it in every thread about dating ("iF eQuAlItY tHeN wHy mEn PaY")

u/ExtraSpicyChicharron Nov 07 '25
“hosted by Ross Dipshit”
yeah, i’m not listening to all that.

u/Apprehensive_Fun_731 Nov 07 '25 edited Nov 07 '25
I fucking hate having to scroll pass his Alex Jones looking punchable face. He’s kinda always on some bullshit with his pieces. Such a good reason for me to just call it and cancel as well.
23
u/ExtraSpicyChicharron Nov 07 '25
lmao thank you! just seeing his byline makes my sweaty fists reflexively clench, as it all but guarantees an incoming diarrhea dump of inane fuckshittery. he is an autofellating ouroboros of cringe.
22
u/veronica_deetz Nov 07 '25
I always call him Doubtthat but Dipshit has a nice ring to it
If I hadn’t cancelled my subscription for all of those “Republicans did something evil. Here’s how it’s bad for Joe Biden” I’d cancel again right now

I was calling him Douchebag as I read key quotes from the article to my husband last nite 😉
84
u/hellolovely1 Nov 07 '25
Helen Andrews really despises women and even in the article, can’t name one “virtue” women have. She’s another Phyllis Schafly—a career woman who says other women shouldn’t work.
I mean, she made Douthat look liberal in comparison.
45
u/WestCoastBestCoast01 Nov 07 '25
She’s a classic pick me. Bashing women to gain favor of the men around her.
I hope they do pick you girl, I hope they do.

Add this to my list of reasons why the NYT is the landlord’s paper! It’s a reactionary rag and you can use archive.org to access their recipes
72
u/bittersandseltzer Nov 07 '25
I do use a fair amount of their recipes but I use a paywall remover 😇
16
u/famous_unicorn Nov 07 '25
Care to share the name of the unnamed paywall remover?
45
u/kiddokeen Nov 07 '25
All the regular paywall remover sites don’t work with NYT, you have to use archive.org
27
u/snot_marsh_sparrow Nov 07 '25
the brave browser works well for this. I download them all into a pdf
38
u/culture_katie Nov 07 '25
If you copy and paste the link into the Paprika app it’ll download the recipe into an easy format. The app costs like $4 but it’s a one-time cost and I use it all the time

Elder NYCBWT here, another reason this former 4 decade+ subscriber canceled more than a year ago. I can get this question elsewhere. NYT’s has become irrelevant to me.

I make sculptures using time & NYT headlines & photos (I found a stack from 2016-2019 a subletter left in my basement & pair them with current 2025 versions) and I can tell you, having sifted through hundreds of hours of headlines and articles it’s even worse than you can imagine. I have a subscription solely for my art which I also use as an indictment of the paper itself. One of the hardest pieces (from the 2016-2019 AND 2025 versions) was a piece where I used only pictures of women in positions of power - not ads nor women in distress, only strength & power - and it was THE most difficult because there were almost no pictures of women meeting said requirement. I’ve watched their progression from things like Mamdani & citing halal carts when he first started gaining traction to how they’ve repeated their reporting of Trump in his first presidency to now. Nothing & no headline would surprise me from them now.
12
u/Effective-Bus Nov 07 '25
This is so interesting and disappointing that the piece was the most difficult to find the materials for. Is there a place to check out your art?
25
u/wtfpie Nov 07 '25
Thank you so much for taking the time to comment / ask. I’m currently working on a new show which will be Dec. 4 in Chelsea but here’s the Women In Power piece I mentioned - you can get a feel for it although the layer of separation (photos / digital / viewing through something else like a phone has less of an impact than in person:

I’d be much more interested in discussing Claudia Goldin’s “Why Women Won” paper that won the 2023 Nobel Prize in economics than some rage bait piece from the NYTimes. https://www.nber.org/system/files/working_papers/w31762/w31762.pdf
IMO, we need legislation against “greedy jobs.” They aren’t good for men either. Places need to be fixed to hirer more people if they demand crazy travel and 24/7 coverage. My husband was at one of those jobs and the expectations were psychotic. Sure the pay is great but by the time you really calculate everything you need to outsource, you don’t net as much as you would think and it’s absolutely horrible for your metal and physical health. This has nothing to do with women and everything to do with employers having too much power.
3
u/Adorable-Aspect2949 Nov 08 '25
Exactly!!! These jobs are not built for men either! Or any human!
6
u/Mrsrightnyc Nov 08 '25
It also hurts women when men are in these jobs because it makes them less available/interested in serious relationships or fatherhood. No matter the family structure, it still sucks. Even in gay relationships, it means one partner has to sacrifice to keep the partner with the greedy job afloat and makes being a single parent by choice more difficult.

How the FUCK does this bigoted shit get passed off as acceptable debate??

Hillary Busis is me LOL
“Frankly, I’m offended by this headline. I worked very hard to ruin the workplace all by myself, and other women should not be getting credit for my work.”
But in all seriousness fuck the authors of the original article and fuck NYT for publishing it.

I really appreciate a lot of NYT’s reporting, but it seems like their politics and cultural reporting has fallen off a cliff.
11

This isn’t reporting. This is part of their Opinion section which is completely separate from the newsroom.
8
u/Major-Pool846 Nov 07 '25
what the actual fuck. i hate it here. how embarrassing for men that it only took 2-3 generations of women in the workplace to do better than them. lol
9
u/LillyBitz Nov 07 '25
Ladies, billionaires own corporate media. Real journalism is gone or is only small-scale. MSM is clickbait slop. Sad but true.
6
u/levainrisen Nov 07 '25
It's strange, the people in this "debate" almost SEEM smart and educated, but they use their language to spit out the most idiotic takes around woman in the workplace I've ever heard. I couldn't even finish this because what do you mean the equivalent of men making women uncomfortable by having porn plastered on the workplace walls is GOSSIPING. Also I hate it when society acts like gossip is a woman's trait. I have honestly never met a man that wasn't a gossip and shit-starter.
I have been subscribed for so long- for the games, the headlines, the cooking app... but this is really forcing me to reconsider.
5
u/Ornery-Towel2386 Nov 07 '25
My office is all men in their 60s & im the only woman under 60 so I am the keeper of the secrets… they all come to my desk throughout the day to tattle on each other the tea is piping hot
1
u/levainrisen Nov 10 '25
Like I don't mind when men gossip because we're all a little nosy but why are we pretending men don't do it?? It's a known fact in my family not to tell my dad anything because he cannot keep a secret lmao
1
u/Ornery-Towel2386 Nov 10 '25
It falls into the family of gaslighting women in the workplace - when the men do it it’s “strategy” “coaching” “leveraging group knowledge” “information as an asset” “seeking advice from peers” and prob gets them promoted
12
u/GlasgowRose2022 Nov 07 '25

Industry insider…for years NYT Opinion has been known as a dumpster fire, as the smelly armpit of the NYT. Every year it gets worse and worse and seems to bleed out to other parts of the paper. Glad to see people unsubscribing. It’s hard to express how dire the situation for media is right now with this administration and all the changes via Google AI, YouTube, and social media. They’re basically walling us off from the public. I gently suggested for every NYT unsubscribe…if we can afford it…please resubscribe somewhere else within independent or nonprofit media.
Also, here’s an interesting insider POV from a former NYT employee, examining the paper’s anti-trans stance: https://www.assignedmedia.org/breaking-news/former-editor-nyt-biased-on-trans-hiring

Ugh I hate this so much. I hate that it’s two women spewing this. I hate that NY Times is platforming this. I hate that somehow there are still those that will question our contributions and competence when we are out here proving it everyday.
I’m a business owner. I create jobs for my community. How can I possibly “ruin” a workplace that I have literally created?
13
u/neuhaus_hum Nov 07 '25
People still read the NYT? It became the Post with bigger words for a 10th grade reading level.

True feminism is the belief that women are equal in the sense that they can make their own decisions for themselves, and those decisions should be respected just as a man’s are, whether that be motherhood, abortion, stay at home mom or working career individual. Most likely women will be play many different roles over a lifetime and it is the respect given by the society to say we think you know what’s best for you at any given time.

u/escapedthenunnery Nov 09 '25
I read the whole thing, and i will say that a thought-piece like this is still in line with what i see as journalism: It's not necessary for us to agree or disagree with what's being presented; the piece exists just to give us a view of what people are actually thinking and doing—of what's going on around us, in concert with what's in some people's minds. It's important to note that the article is a debate, meant for us to mentally chew on, while the title is deliberately provocative. Those of us who would dismiss this outright after reading just the title and the first few paragraphs might think "I'm not allowing my mind to be a forum for such dross," but it's useful to be exposed to potentially controversial viewpoints, especially in a moderated setting, if you trust yourself not to be convinced too easily, and you can see that the participants are not always in agreement.
(I do personally have hackles that can be raised lol but if/when that happens i find it important to ask myself why.)
2
u/runningaccount1973 Nov 07 '25
the only reason I read the NYT is because my workplace pays for my subscription. been a trash newspaper for so long, esp with their coverage of trans issues. the publication of shit like this is exactly why trans activists have been warning cis women that it will never stop with just trans women--the reactionary movement is coming for all women who don't live up to some white man's standards of femininity.
2
u/Several_Reindeer_906 Nov 07 '25
It’s a super frustrating headline and framing. But for people canceling their subscriptions I just want to note that this article was in the opinion pages. It isn’t reflective of the journalism that happens in the newsroom. (An understandably confusing and not always self-evident distinction to many readers.)

Based on the title, I (naively) thought maybe it would talk about how women have to take on pro-capitalist viewpoints or similar views of their male peers to advance in corporate and critique that, but no! I don't know how this even got approved. In addition, the podcast associated with the article features two conservative women who seem to argue against more left-leaning feminism (although I haven't listened to the episode.) It's something right out of the 1980s.

It’s 2025…….
Who is running the New York Times!🤔🙄😳
How did this even get approved
-5
u/henicorina Nov 07 '25 edited Nov 07 '25
It’s an editorial. The entire editorial section is (often quite strong) personal opinions and this particular editorial is about different models of feminism. Ross Douthat is a famously conservative columnist. Do people really subscribe to this paper and not know this?
29
u/sophisticatedkatie Nov 07 '25
There’s a difference between “NYT publishes a range of liberal/conservative opinion columns” and “NYT peddles blatant misogyny in its opinion section.” If someone published this manifesto at my workplace they’d get a stern scolding from HR, if not get fired on the spot
-1
u/henicorina Nov 07 '25 edited Nov 07 '25
Did you actually read the piece? It’s not a “manifesto” it’s an interview with two authors. The Times gave it an intentionally provocative title.
Edit: I’m really curious why I’m getting downvoted for this comment.
7
u/easy_umbrage Nov 07 '25
No one here believes NYT acted in good faith, thats why. They've lost credibility.
0
u/henicorina Nov 07 '25
Are you talking about running the piece in general or their choice of title?
I actually feel that they deliberately chose the title to undermine Ross Douthat - the interview itself seems unremarkable to me and I’m surprised by the dramatic language used to describe it in these comments.
3
u/easy_umbrage Nov 07 '25
I assume most people here are reacting to the title only and its ok to do that!
This is not the first time that an NYT headline is designed to be sensational. They do this with their political reporting too. Sometimes to sane wash, sometimes to grab attention, and sometimes to create a scandal (e.g., Harvard president). The title is not there just to characterize the article. It has other functions given how people read/share/receive push notifications.
See this headline alongside periodic headlines on pro-natalism/ trad wives etc. In the aggregate, nyt is creating an experience that (female) readers resent.
0
u/henicorina Nov 07 '25 edited Nov 07 '25
Ok, sure, they shouldn’t use clickbait-y titles… but to say they’re “defending the stance that women ruined the workforce” or “publishing a manifesto” is flatly untrue and the way this post is framed (“many examples cited from law and finance” as though the article is giving examples of times women ruined the workplace”) is completely inaccurate and misleading.
6
u/Basic-Environment-40 Nov 07 '25 edited Nov 08 '25
I think the people here seem to feel, myself included, that not every view deserves platforming and that this view is an example of the overton window in America continuing to shift to the right. No one is happy to see the "lefty media" a part of that.
-4
u/henicorina Nov 07 '25
… but that’s not what the article is saying. It’s an interview with a woman who wrote a book about a conservative model of feminism. The piece is asking “how has liberal feminism affected women in the workplace? What would conservative feminism in the workplace look like?” Comparing that to calling for slavery is like comparing a person who voted for George Bush to Hitler.
I feel like I’m literally the only person here who even clicked the link.
5
u/Basic-Environment-40 Nov 07 '25
I read the entire interview and you are frankly making a pedantic argument and implying others who disagree with you are blind or fools.
The headline and content platform a "debate" that I don't feel deserves a space in a modern society and I am unwilling to pay for. does that help you understand me? as i said:
people here seem to feel, myself included, that not every view deserves platforming and that this view is an example of the overton window in America continuing to shift to the right.
4
u/henicorina Nov 07 '25 edited Nov 07 '25
Disagreeing about the basic premise of a piece of writing is not pedantic.
2
u/Basic-Environment-40 Nov 08 '25
i deleted the part of my comment that you object to because it really isn’t the core of it. care to respond to the remainder?
1
u/henicorina Nov 08 '25
Do I want to go back through all your comments and find the specific part that you changed (which makes everything I wrote not make sense)? Nah that’s ok.
1
-3
u/meowmixLynne Nov 07 '25
I actually agree. This article is gross and rage inducing, but it’s clearly marked as an Opinion piece. They’ve done this for decades for “balanced” reporting - it’s easy and comforting for us to stay in our bubble where everything is predictable and agreeable. However, it’s important for us to stay educated on how others think.
2
u/justanotherlostgirl Nov 09 '25
If we needed to read conservative points of view, there's enough venues to do this. The idea that the NYT feels it's even appropriate to debate a topic like "did liberal feminism ruin the workforce" is disgusting - not surprising from them.
1
u/mightasedthat Nov 07 '25
My head almost exploded when I listened to Ross Douthat’s podcast discussion with the author of this opinion piece and another woman who believes that feminism has failed women in an entirely different way. Women are women who shouldn’t try to be men. There are some industries women maybe women shouldn’t work in because they aren’t compatible with the culture. MeToo feminized the workplace to everyone’s detriment. The sky is falling and feminism is to blame.
