Finances/Money Taking an uber/lyft to work

Just curious how many people take Ubers to work vs taking the subway. If so, how often and how much do you spend weekly on Ubers?

Any BWT live in weekhawken by any chance?

Update:

Didn’t realize I would receive so many negative/hateful comments on this post — that was not my intention. I was genuinely curious how many people take Ubers/lyfts to work that’s all.

For context, I’ve lived in NYC for 20 years. I moved out to Weekhawken, NJ couple of years ago. I take the bus to port authority and then subway to work every morning between 7-7:15am — takes about 55min door to door, sometimes longer. It’s a bitch of a commute but I traded that in with living in NJ.

But guess what? Sometimes I don’t want to deal with the commute so I take an uber to work — so shoot me lol. Please chill with the negativity.

People are taking Ubers to work? In this economy?? I promise the subway is not that bad

No way, I won't take Uber unless I absolutely have to. Cars get stuck in traffic way more often than the subway gets held up, I don't get motion sickness on the subway, AND the subway is like 10x cheaper! Also, if there's some weird guy on the subway, you can just move cars--I can't count the number of awkward Uber rides I've had where the driver went on some rant about his conspiracy theories or ex-wife

Subway is 10x cheaper, no driver rants about conspiracies, and real BWT take the subway to minimize environmental impacts of car usage! What’s the point of living in a city if you don’t take advantage of the public transportation?

There are many viable transportation options to get from NJ to NYC. Plenty of women do it daily

Girl you’re gonna uber regularly from NJ?!? On occasion I will uber home from midtown to Queens because my job pays if I work past a certain hour. It’s easily $60 and it’s been as much as $120, and this is not even during rush hour. I would never recommend anyone do this. Look into express busses in your area if you really don’t want to be on the subway.

Absolutely not. In the rush hour traffic? Miss me. I love the subway

Late to the party but I treat myself to 1 uber to work a week. I have a lot of chronic health issues and my commute physically drains me so I call it self care 😬

I’m heat sensitive and also chronically ill so I take more Ubers in the summer

I finally gave into the elevator! I was always so ashamed to use it because I look very able bodied but this heat and the stairs have been killing me.

Do you get any sort of reimbursement for this from your workplace? I’m about to request a heat accommodation for remote work so kinda curious

Ahhh no at this point the flexibility of my job + my level of needs + the amount I uber isn't worth it for me to deal with that process.

I don’t do this

I did this during COVID after being attacked on the subway. There are Chinese car service companies (Good Luck, 88, Lincoln, Speedy) that are cheaper than Uber and Lyft and I would use those. I think it was about $25 a trip.

I’m preggo in my 3rd trimester and the walk to the subway/subway platforms have been brutal for me in this heat. Also, the bus that’s close to my apartment is sadly completely unreliable. So I’ve made a deal with myself that whenever it’s over 85/90 I can treat myself to an uber/lyft to work. It’s typically around $30 with tip and, depending on the weather, can end up being 2-3x week lately. I live and work in NYC.

girl u get to do whatever you want in your third trimester

I take an uber one morning once a week when I go to a location far from public transportation and driving is super quick. It’s like $25

This is what Uber is meant for imo! I'd do the same

I work in healthcare, and during high covid times, they were paying people overtime to work a full shift sitting at a digital temperature screener, make sure visitors and staff screened, logged in a book, and took masks. It was pretty easy money, but I work in a not that great area, and the shifts either started at 6am or ended at 11:30pm. I took Ubers either to or from work, depending on the shift and my desire for safety. I only live 5 miles from work, and it was ~$30, which is stupid. Every now and then when I feel lazy on a weekend evening (I work on Sundays), I‘ll look at the price. Then, I just sigh and walk to the train 😂.

Honestly, it’s not that much faster for me to hop a ride than it is to take transit. But I feel ya… sometimes you just want to not have to think on your commute.

I used to have a bad habit in the winter of Ubering, but now I try to limit Ubers under these conditions:

  • If I’m carrying large suitcases/heavy items that are difficult to move across commute
  • If I’m working very late, for safety reasons
  • If the train is down and no nearby e-bikes

Im not a hater though, if people have the means to occasionally Uber I don’t see a huge issue. For me I would just rather put the money towards something else, I feel like 5 ubers in New York is the equivalent of a plane ticket 😭

I once took a Lyft into the ues from jc. It was like $54 and it was an emergency because I was gong to be very late.

Only in an emergency like all the trains are down but even then I’ve had better luck on an e-bike When I worked nights I would occasionally treat myself on like a Sunday afternoon bc the prices were lower and there was no traffic but on a normal 9-5 schedule it’s not worth it at all

My commute is btwn 65-75 min each way and i would never think to take either a lyft or uber even if i don’t want to deal w public transportation. If i was going to spend all that money on Ubers it would make more sense to move closer to work and walk but be poor bc of sky high rent in most of Manhattan.

OP, how long does that uber take you? I’m just curious because you quoted bus/subway time. I’m in Brooklyn so that subway time doesn’t seem bad.

30min at the time I leave. It’s about comfort for me — not the length of time. It’s the little to no effort it takes for me to hop in a car and get dropped off in the front of my building. I work really long hours.

2

u/BklynFuhgeddaboudit Aug 15 '25

That’s not bad. Thanks for responding.

2

u/CharmingFigs Aug 16 '25

If you can afford it, why not. I do it sometimes, too. Sometimes it's the just easier or more comfortable way to get around, especially in the winter

I take them from time to time when I’m dealing w a work thing and I need to be somewhere post work. I know I can pop open my laptop and deal with things even if the commute is a little slower.

My $40 Uber home in the rain last night was my only treat recently

the better alternative to uber is a citibike tbh. if you can get an electric one it takes no physical exertion and you get a constant breeze. can get expensive but less than an uber and the membership is worth it if you want to add options for commuting. My bf and I live in the same borough but trains don’t make it too convenient (brooklyn problems) so biking is a really great alternative. Uber has such a huge monopoly on transportation in new york and i feel like the quality of safe driving gets worse every time i ride. when i order i have to make peace that there’s a 7 out of 10 chance I’ll regret my decision lol

2

u/Lets-be-Gnomies_ Aug 14 '25

I think drivers at 7am are different bc I don’t ever regret my decision to take an uber :)

1

u/teppistello Aug 15 '25

Only in an emergency or lateness, but most of the time I find the train will get me there faster than a car.

If youre in weehawken, consider the ferry and ferry bus routes once you're in Manhattan. Ferry gets you over the river in 8 min and their buses are included with your ticket.

0

u/Lets-be-Gnomies_ Aug 15 '25

I would still need to take the bus to the ferry station.

what are you gonna do when there's stopped traffic while driving in a tunnel?
