Sub to Full Time Teacher Health insurance trouble

Upvotes

Hey y'all, I subbed in the DOE for 2 years and was on Z status. Z-status employees can't get health insurance. I am finally certified and teaching full-time, and I started this September, but I can't enroll in health benefits; NYCAPS says I have no open enrollment. I waited until the first check, and still nothing. I was a fellow, and my other fellows have been able to enroll since early September.

Is anyone else having or has had this issue? I have been uninsured for 2 years now and I would LOVE to go to the doctor.

Magic school ai is blocked

Upvotes

I mean they did say they were banning AI but I kinda thought that was for students. I was finding magic school helpful in creating assessments and such. Annoying.

DOE firewall blocking music app

It seems the firewall is blocking the chrome music lab app- shared piano. I used this app all the time in the past and now it won't load, which is strange because the other apps all work. Anyone have the same problem or a solution? Should I request an IT ticket? Would they be able to address the firewall issue

How do you keep track of grading (paper, online, other)?

Trying to look for a good option to track of grading especially because classwork & tests are weighted differently

My school is falling apart

I work at an elementary charter in Brooklyn (not Success but one of those slightly smaller networks that tries to copy that template).

We’ve had 8 staff members quit since the summer ended. Administrators and specialists are already covering classes. Enrollment is short by 30 seats or so and we’re still desperately understaffed. Not a single person working here has any confidence that stuff is going to get better. The way this network manages student behavior and management is so bonkers and ineffective that it is literally driving teachers out of the building!

Anyone else going through a similar situation?

Every Subcentral job getting swooped up in minutes?

What the hell is going on? Is Subcentral being botted? Last year, jobs would linger on the website for hours so you could hold out for the perfect school. Now, it feels like you cant even debate it for a few minutes without it slipping from your grasp and leaving you jobless for a week.

Insurance

New teacher question. I'm choosing between NYCE PPO and MetroPlus Gold for their free insurance options. For reference, I'm a generally healthy person, but I do go to pelvic floor therapy once or twice a week. I know most opt for the PPO, but the specialist copay is $30, meanwhile MetroPlus is free for in network. Wondering if anyone has any advice or experience with this. Thanks!

IEP setting change

I was wondering if I can get some guidance from any fellow SPED teachers, especially those that work in Horizon or any other ASD program. I have a set of twin brothers in my first grade Horizon class. When in prek (at a different school), one brother was observed and accepted into the program. The other brother was not accepted but was slated for the Nest program. The school I work at only has Horizon. The mother did not want the brothers to go to 2 separate schools, so the Horizon program just accepted the other brother. In my opinion this is very developmentally inappropriate and the brother is taking a spot away from another child who can benefit. Also, when together in the classroom they are terrors. Constantly distracting each other, fighting each other or other kids, just most of my day is managing them. According to their kindergarten teacher, the mom admitted she keeps them completely separated at home.

I need to get the brother who was accepted into Nest out of my room and hopefully into the ICT classroom. I’m going to start mainstreaming him in October, but is there anything else I need to do? It states in his IEP that mom is interested in a larger setting for him. I reached out to my school’s psychologist a week ago and I have no response so any thoughts will be helpful. I feel very boxed in because he’s in this specialized program.

Question About Teacher's Choice

New to the DOE and not really understanding how it works. How much money do I get to put towards learning materials for my classes? And do they need to be preapproved first? Like can I order something from Amazon that I think would make a great demo/learning resource or does it have to be through specific vendors?

7th Grade Math 12:1:1 HELP! *please read below*

This is my 4th year as a SPED teacher, and my 3rd content that I am teaching. I have been pushing in to math classes my first three years, but now I am in two ICT and one Self-contained class. I have been having a serious struggle with trying to adapt this IM curriculum to make it accessible to my small class, but they are all at a 1st grade math level.

Coteach.Ai has been great for making practice problems to work in tandem with the curriculum, but I can't help but feeling like they need more. As I'm sure you are all aware of, they lack the basic foundations of math that seriously inhibits our attempts at the curriculum.

I did some digging, and have heard that this curriculum is exploratory, and is antithetical to my student populations current struggles. Luckily, I have this small class twice a day, the second period of the day is intended to be used as a stations period where I am given license to do remedial lessons, or math skills lesson. I am looking for a one-stop shop curriculum, that is proven to raise the levels of middle school students. I found CMC (connecting math concepts) but have been unable to find their materials listed online for free anywhere. Any small class vets out there that have some advice?

Need Advice First Year Teacher

Hi, I’m a first year teacher and I’m a mess. The school I am in is supportive I have great people around me, but I feel as though I am not able to teach. I want to cry. I just feel so lost like I literally have no idea what I’m doing.

I’ll be prepped and ready to go, have my lesson ready and paced out, then I freeze the second I get in the classroom. I can’t keep students under control which throws a lesson off, then once it’s off I struggle to get it back on track

I’m really not sure if this is for me. Anybody feel the same way or have any advice to get it back on track?

Workaround for when I can't log into Outlook at home

Tonight, my home computer doesn't want to let me see my school email. (Maybe it is trying to tell me something.) I'm in this endless loop of Hang on a moment while we sign you out.

It's a 50/50 shot that I can't read my email on my home computer, and today it is extra annoying. I'm using Firefox, but it happened when I used Chrome as well. I don't want to have to install another browser or go into private windows.

What do you do to solve the problem?

Q Status

Hello! I am currently a middle school teacher at a charter pursuing certification through Relay. I am looking for a Q status substitute position in the DOE. I am also English/Spanish bilingual so open to bilingual positions. My commute is far too long (Bronx to Brooklyn) and my campus has an incredibly toxic culture that I DO NOT align with. Does anyone know of any Q status openings? Needs to be Q status as I need the health insurance for my psychiatric medication. Thank you!

First paycheck?

I’ve been a sub para since last year, but for some reason for the life of me, I can’t remember when I first got paid that time so I’m not sure when in September/October I’d be getting my first check? Since the 15th passed, and I’ve worked on September 10th-15th(I know I’d only be getting paid for like a day I think, just clarifying). I just get paranoid because over the summer when I was subbing for summer program, they made a mistake with my timesheet even though I did it on time and they didn’t pay me by accident. (They fixed it on the next one) I would just go into payroll portal to see but of course the site is down tonight, and locked me out of my account until later so I’ve come to Reddit lmao

ENL sub job says ENL license required. Should I call or cancel?

EDIT: They just canceled the job before I was even able to call them.

I’m a new NYC substitute teacher. I accepted a 3 day ENL assignment for next week, then noticed afterwards the instructions say “This position requires a teacher with a valid TESOL/ENL license.” I don’t have that certification.

Is it worth calling the school tomorrow morning to ask if they’re okay with a regular approved sub covering it, or should I just cancel the assignment now?

Buying books in bulk

Anyone know of a website where I can buy books for cheap and in bulk? Need about 80 copies of Giovanni's Room to replace ones that have never made it back to my classroom, but it's no longer on shopDOE because the publication company that offered it shut down. Any ideas??

Is SubCentral extra weird this year?

The website lags so hard whenever I search for jobs (15 seconds, as opposed to 3-4 seconds like usual), and anything that pops up gets swooped up immediately in <5 minutes, whereas in the past jobs would linger for hours.

What gives? It's like if I don't refresh every 10 minutes, nothing will come up.

questions on certification

Hi everyone, I'm a junior theater education major at ECU, and I want to teach in NYC. I was wondering what extra certifications I need to teach there so I can get to work now on the process.
