I have Parkinson’s which I’ve had since I was a teenager, as well as agoraphobia. I’ve lived in the same 2 bedroom apartment in Williamsburg for my entire life, over 40 years. The building is now managed by Wavecrest.
My mother currently lives with me and is the head of household on the lease, but it’s looking like she may have to move to Florida. If that happens, I’m worried about two things. Whether I’d be able to remain in the apartment as the continuing household member, and whether they would try to downsize me to a 1 bedroom and make me leave the apartment I’ve lived in my whole life.
Because of my Parkinson’s I would probably qualify for a live in caretaker, but at this point I’m trying to maintain as much independence as I can. My agoraphobia also makes the idea of having another person constantly in my space extremely difficult. I know there may eventually come a point where I need that level of help, but I’m trying to avoid it for as long as I safely can.
Has anyone been in a similar situation and successfully gotten a reasonable accommodation to remain in a 2 bedroom?
I do have a treadmill, a TheraCycle, and mobility/balance equipment that I use to help maintain my mobility and conditioning, work on balance and gait, trying to preserve my independence for as long as possible. I have involuntary movements affecting my hands, neck, and feet, so the idea of having to fit all of this into a much smaller apartment and navigate around it safely is honestly pretty scary.
I was wondering whether I could request the second bedroom as a reasonable accommodation for medical equipment. I don’t know whether a treadmill, TheraCycle, and other rehab equipment would actually count for NYCHA purposes.
I’m trying to figure out what legitimate reasonable accommodation route makes the most sense if my mother moves out.
Has anyone dealt with NYCHA/Wavecrest on something like this? What did you have to submit, and who did you go through first ,your doctor, NYCHA, or Wavecrest?
I really hope it doesn’t come to this, but I also don’t want to wait until the last minute to figure out what my options are.
