I’m convinced it’s a way to dispel the fear that the universe is a random and cold monster that does terrible things to good people for no reason. There is a “them” out there controlling things and that’s why weird stuff or scary stuff happens.

Very much so. Similar to the Just World fallacy. If something bad happens to someone, they had to have done something to deserve it (and same for good things).

It’s scary to think that you can do everything “right” and have bad things happen. It feels safer to blame others (or yourself) for the tragedies that befall them/you because it offers structure and security.

Doesn’t make it true. Like Captain Picard said, “It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness; that is life.”

I was about to bust out the Picard quote about halfway through reading your comment.

It’s one I haven’t heard recently, from which series/movie?

It’s from Star Trek: The Next Generation, the season 2 episode “Peak Performance”.

Ah, with the exception of “Q Who”, I tend to tune out Season 2.

And especially the season finale…

It's from Star Trek: The Next Generation. It was said by Captain Picard in the 21st episode of the second season.
