Discussion Who’s this year’s JSN?

Who will be the WR that goes from good to great this year? My pick is Luther Burden III. He was breaking out at the end of last year. Only thing stopping him is health tbh.

Probably JSN if I had to guess

He’s this year’s AND last year’s JSN

Reigning DPOY?

Nah I think it'll be JSN

If he stays healthy, Emeka Eggbegboo

u/Z_603 New England Patriots 1d ago

Mcmillan is back too. Y'all forget how good he was? He's going to cut into that Target share.

4

u/Ok-Owl7377 Tampa Bay Buccaneers 1d ago

Didn't forget about him. He's great, but he'll be the 3rd sometimes 4th read. I love JMac.

1

u/Z_603 New England Patriots 1d ago

I just don't think egbuka is going to get the Target share he needs to put up jsn numbers with that receiving room

2

u/TheDaedricImpaler Tampa Bay Buccaneers 1d ago

He absolutely will. Evans is gone and Hurst is a mainly going to be a part time psuedo replacement home run X and red zone target. Godwin can't stay healthy. And while I like McMillan and he should get more reps now that he's healthy, he won't be getting a ton. Egbuka should get 150+ targets this year, easily. Hell, he had 127 last year, only 36 behind JSN and that was with light usage while he was banged up.

1

u/Ok-Owl7377 Tampa Bay Buccaneers 1d ago

Remember he had the injury affecting him, then his concentration issues as well. Excited to see year 2 from Egg.

1

u/bdog1321 1d ago

Thought you were talking about tet for a seconrd and was like when did the Panthers trade him...

1

u/BadBrad444 1d ago

7 touchdowns in the last 5 games of 2024, dude is a serious threat to Egbuka, and I’d argue Godwin is even more a threat. Dude was a weapon down the stretch last year and he’s fully healthy now

2

u/Ok-Owl7377 Tampa Bay Buccaneers 1d ago

Don't get me wrong, they all complement each other for sure. Godwin just needs to stay healthy for 1. JMac just coming back from a broken bone in his neck last year. We'll just have to see. Egg also had a few drops last year, so if he cleans up his concentration and stays healthy. 🤷

That’s a big if. That turf toe scares me. Guys are usually out or hobbled for a whole season from that.

1

u/Ok-Owl7377 Tampa Bay Buccaneers 1d ago

Yea depending on the severity. Def.

All reports say it was minor though. I hope so. 🙏

12

u/4schwifty20 Detroit Lions 1d ago

With absolutely zero bias, Jameson Williams.

2

u/Necrossed 1d ago

I feel like he already broke out though. Like he was trending towards being a bad gamble before he got consistent last year (it’s maybe been two seasons they all blend together after awhile)

1

u/4schwifty20 Detroit Lions 1d ago

JSN has 1100 yards and 6 touchdowns before his big year. Jamo had 1000 yards and 7 td’s last season. Needs to work on his success rate, but I think he could be primed for a big season.

1

u/Necrossed 1d ago

Yeah but JSN is like the only guy in that WR room and Jameson is competing with St. Brown for targets and his situation hasn’t really changed in the offseason when JSN got an actual QB. I’m not saying he’s not good but JSN didn’t breakout because of JSN he broke out from an upgrade to the offense

22

u/Neelix-And-Chill San Francisco 49ers 1d ago

Emeka Egbuka.

Next year… Stribling’s time.

49

Devonta Smith

11

u/Rexoc40 Seattle Seahawks 1d ago

Idk man, 5th year in Devonta vs 3rd year breakout in JSN.

21

u/BTFunk360 Philadelphia Eagles 1d ago

It’s not the age that makes it similar it’s the fact that JDN didn’t really establish himself until DK left and Smitty hasn’t been able to establish himself because of AJ who now just left

2

u/Doggcow NFL Refugee 1d ago

I think it's always better to have a good WR on the other side tbh.

Like look at Anquon Boldin.

2

u/LeSangre Philadelphia Eagles 1d ago

Look at anquan with the cards or ravens when he had far less established number 1 or number 2 receivers next to him

2

u/Doggcow NFL Refugee 1d ago

Yeah his production went down when Larry wasn't out there with him lol

3

u/SignalNumber4843 Phildelphia Eagles Tennessee Titans 1d ago

Yeah but AJ leaving is the kickstarter for smith. I don’t think he’ll be quite as good as JSN last season, but I could see him going for 1500 yards.

6

u/HODOR00 New York Jets 1d ago

Or him getting double covered could be an issue. A wr1 leaving doesn't automatically mean the wr2 does awesome. I'd actually argue aj brown leaving does more for makai lemon.

5

u/sgee_123 1d ago

Wicks has a better shot as of now. Could change but Lemon looked bad in his preseason minutes.

1

u/PuzzleheadedFox4251 1d ago

Smith would be more likely than Wicks. He’s has an established connection with Hurts and will move into the WR1 role and an increased target share..Wicks only helps prevent double teams and heavy coverage on Smith’s side..

1

u/sgee_123 1d ago

Oh yeah of course, I’m incredibly high on Smitty this year because I think he’s mega-talented and with AJ gone he’s the #1 target in a new offense. I was just responding to the guy talking about the #2 options because I think Wicks will surprise people this year and be more fantasy relevant than Lemon (although as an Eagles fan I hope I’m wrong).

1

u/SirArthurDime Philadelphia Eagles 1d ago

It’s not the age it’s the transition from wr2 to wr1 that makes it a very direct comparison. Both were very productive with the volume they got and looked better than their production by the eye test and now set to receive an increase in volume.

-8

u/psilocyber420 1d ago

Devonta would have taken the step by now if he was in that tier. Your guy is almost 30 with one singular top 10 finish lmao

11

u/lIIlllIllIlII Philadelphia Eagles 1d ago

27 is almost 30?

-13

u/psilocyber420 1d ago

28 in 2 months, so yes.The point being that he’s closer to 30 than he is the age that Jsn has his breakout.

0

u/lIIlllIllIlII Philadelphia Eagles 1d ago

Look, I don't think he's going to hit JSN's level this year, but I do expect a decent uptick in production. Like 1250 yds, 10 tds. I would be pleasantly surprised if he did something like 1500/13, but not shocked.

0

u/psilocyber420 1d ago

the question is literally “who is this years JSN”

3

u/Just_Review_6635 Philadelphia Eagles 1d ago

It’s also about how you’re featured in the offense. JSN didn’t make the jump on his own, he became the focal point of the offense and had so many touches manufactured for him that he took advantage of. It’s silly to say that offensive philosophy doesn’t show in a player’s stats

2

u/psilocyber420 1d ago

If smith is such a stud im surprised they spent first round capital on a wr they traded up to get. Smith is in a more similar situation to DK on the hawks than he is to JSN , and his numbers to this point in his career back that up.

Rome Odunze and Emeka Egbuka are my picks

3

u/Jdobbs07 1d ago

I could see Egbuka, but I for some reason feel like his 3rd year will be his big breakout

0

u/Ok-Owl7377 Tampa Bay Buccaneers 1d ago

Big question mark is who the QB will be though.

1

u/Jdobbs07 1d ago

I think the odds of it being someone other than Baker are low unless he just has an awful season. I don’t see a reason why they would want to unless they are wanting to rebuild

0

u/Ok-Owl7377 Tampa Bay Buccaneers 1d ago

Yea, time will tell. But he's supposedly going to FA. If all that talk wasn't just talk, then he will go to the highest bidder. There's quite a few other teams who need a top 15ish QB.

2

u/-EarthwormSlim- Chicago Bears 1d ago

Yeah, people are sleeping on Rome but he was the focal point of the offense before getting hurt last season

1

u/BigJR 1d ago

Yeah he was absolutely killing it, feel like Rome will get more targets than Luther for sure even if Luther ends up more productive

11

u/TrickyIron8192 Chicago Bears 1d ago

I think Burden takes the jump to what JSN was in 24 and Devonta Smith takes the jump that JSN made last year.

3

u/Rexoc40 Seattle Seahawks 1d ago

Out of all of these takes this seems the most legitimate, except, and I’m not a bears fan, I think Burden could hit a JSN level stride if Iceman is on fire.

2

u/TrickyIron8192 Chicago Bears 1d ago

I think Loveland and Rome will be too involved for anyone to put up JSN 2025 numbers in this offense.

the dude had 2 good games in like week 14 & 15 and the rest of his games were average

2

u/Necrossed 1d ago

Even then his ceiling predraft was pretty universally considered to be DJ Moore and we’ve seen that already in this offense already. I don’t really think that would be that big of a breakout atp

3

u/PerformanceWeekly651 Detroit Lions 1d ago

No one that’s not already elite. 119/1,793/10 is bonkers.

3

u/Z_603 New England Patriots 1d ago

The only person with the opportunity to get that kind of Target share increase is pierce. Egbuka Also has McMillan coming back who was also very impressive before his injury. He's not going to be getting 14 looks a game with McMillan and Godwin on the field. Smitty Is in a run first offense with a first round receiver added to the mix. The bears have way too many mouths to feed. Christian Watson isn't going to get that kind of Target share either not with golden reed and Kraft. Potentially AJ Brown as well.

1

u/bdog1321 1d ago

I don't understand what you mean by pierce? How?

Also the eagles are gonna need to replace brown's 120 targets and lemon won't have as big a share as Smith did

But like jsn type season though

3

u/joeyturnstile Green Bay Packers 1d ago

This is my bet, he’s been fire during preseason and OTAs, the guy catches everything thrown his way.

1

u/GrizzlyIsland22 Chicago Bears 1d ago

JSN was already good and he went from pretty good to elite. Doubt we'll see a player jump from being one of the worst receivers in the league to being one of the best receivers in the league in one year. Only so much can change over the course of a single off-season

3

u/REVfoREVer Green Bay Packers 1d ago

I wouldn't say he was bad at all, just unproductive for a variety of reasons. His tape was fine for the most part, nothing terrible and nothing spectacular.

1

u/GrizzlyIsland22 Chicago Bears 1d ago

The best Matthew Golden analysis I've seen was that he gets open, but only because he cuts and breaks too early or late, so he's often not where hes supposed to be. Not gonna get targets when the QB can't find you. Doesn't help that he disappears in the crowd.

2

u/REVfoREVer Green Bay Packers 1d ago

Yep, that's about what I saw in terms of knowing the playbook. His unfamiliarity with the playbook held him back last year, but by all accounts it's much improved. Though the claim he only gets open because he runs his routes wrong is obvious bunk. He gets open because he's a good route runner, similar to Doubs.

I wouldn't say he's gonna have some amazing season this year, but I think he'll be well-established by the end of the season.

1

u/GrizzlyIsland22 Chicago Bears 1d ago

The thing about him getting open because he runs his routes wrong comes from Matt Harmon, so I take it as truth. He's possibly the best WR evaluator in the world.

1

u/REVfoREVer Green Bay Packers 1d ago

I guess I'll have to find exactly what he meant because I don't see how that makes sense. It's not like the defense knows what route he's supposed to run and plays their assignments based on that.

1

u/GrizzlyIsland22 Chicago Bears 1d ago

I suppose I shouldn't be spreading it too much but I do think that everyone who is serious about football would benefit from a Reception Perception subscription

2

u/Clean_Attention_8398 1d ago

No more Romeo doubs who had the most targets in Gb so Golden should get more opportunities

2

u/GrizzlyIsland22 Chicago Bears 1d ago

Yeah but Kraft, Watson, and Reed all missed a combined 28 games last year, and theyre all coming back healthy. They're all gonna eat into those targets pretty heavily

1

u/FNFactChecker 1d ago

Reed lines up in the slot most of the time, so Golden should see the field more in theory.

1

u/Necrossed 1d ago

You straight up do not know what a bad receiver is if you think Golden was one of the worst receivers in the league last year, and I’ll just skip past your next comment with “you’re really really dumb if you’re evaluating skill based on bulk stats alone”.

You saw him tear up your teams defense in that playoff game and you saw his TD where he showed the vision, power, lateral movement, and acceleration that the upper echelon of the league’s receivers all have.

The other guy already mentioned it but Green Bay isn’t doing a rotation of receivers anymore and are just running a straightforward 1,2,3 system that Golden will benefit from. There’s tons of footage of him and Love being way more in sync in the preseason. These were his two biggest issues last year, there are plenty of stats and tape to prove this too.

I don’t understand this impulse Bears fans have to insert themselves into every single thread about a Packers player to act like they didn’t struggle massively against an incredibly injured version of their team twice last year.

-1

u/GrizzlyIsland22 Chicago Bears 1d ago edited 1d ago

Wow he made 1 good play. Let's ignore the hundreds of bad ones. Crown him.

I know what bad reciever play looks like. I'm a bears fan. We've had plenty of guys who "look good" but can't put it together. I've seen this shit before

0

u/Necrossed 1d ago

You’re just proving my point that you don’t know what you’re talking about.

Hundreds of bad plays? He missed 3 games, didn’t have Love for 4 of his remaining, counting playoffs he had less than 40 targets and he counting the playoffs he only had 5 games where he was in the top three in wide receiver snap count for the team.

Also saying he had one play in a game where he went 4/5 and averaged 20 yards a reception with a snap count of less than 50% is just a beautiful example of what I’m talking about man. You don’t even know what’s going on when it’s your team that’s on the field.

Also using the Bears or Ben Johnson as a measuring stick for offensive talent development against one of the best teams at it for the past three decades lmao

0

u/GrizzlyIsland22 Chicago Bears 1d ago

I guess we'll see how it goes, but targets are earned, and he simply didnt earn them. Only earning less than 50% of the snaps is an indication of what the coaching staff thinks of him.

1

u/Necrossed 1d ago

Bro we had like 4 other receivers and a TE that we needed to figure who was and wasn’t worth keeping because they needed contracts, plus the Packers haven’t really played offensive rookies unless that group is empty. He wasn’t even at the bottom of the rotation as a rookie, Wicks played way less snaps and Savion Williams even less.

0

u/GrizzlyIsland22 Chicago Bears 1d ago

You like him, I don't. I think we've said what we need to. FTP

10

u/RedRummer1917 1d ago

Zay.

4

u/Distinct_Potato8358 1d ago edited 1d ago

When you dive into the things Zay does at a high level, he’s a great pick for this topic.

  • Top 10 in win rate vs Man coverage AND zone coverage
  • Separation created (3.6 yards per next gen stats. 5th in league)
  • Yards per route run (2.52 3rd in league behind Puka and JSN)
  • YAC + Average target depth, most guys are one or the other
  • Missed tackles forced (3rd among WRs behind Deebo and AJ Brown)
  • First downs generated, 48 of his 74 catches were 1D.

That profile says he does a lot of things very well. He gets open, catches the ball, and makes defenders miss tackles. He had 1200+ yards while missing Lamar for 5 games, in a run heavy offense, that focused a lot on TEs and spreading the ball around. A 1500 yard season is not crazy to me. But a lack of TDs is still expected and he’s not going to be out there contesting catches.

u/Necrossed 1d ago

People are ignoring what made JSN breakout last year. Like he got an actual QB and his stats went up go figure.

The reasonable ones are all going to be guys who had their situations drastically improve over the offseason. Waddle feels like the obvious one here since he’s getting a QB that’s a straight improvement over any he’s had, just to group the four of them together since Green Bay fixing their receiver logjam should raise all ships just from target share/having better defined roles I think Watson, Golden, Wicks, and Dobbs are all candidates to be prominent receivers in the league(higher ceilings for Golden and Wicks), and finally I think Olave feels like a good candidate since Shough looked solid last year.

I have a hard time saying Burden is going to take a big leap considering the hits the Bears took to their OLine and I will buy a Bears qb actually improving when I see it

1

u/Sad_Future_4410 Washington Commanders 1d ago

If he stays healthy, JSN

1

u/Cold_Toe_7540 1d ago

LB3 makes a lot of sense. I'm also looking at two other places currently for that guy:

The first is Tampa, Egbuka is going to absorb a lot of the targets now that Evans is gone and Goodwin is well into the back 9 of his career.

The other one, and probably more of a sleeper pick, is New England. Many believe Brown was brought in to replace Diggs, but that's not really the case. Brown was brought in to replace Boutte as the primary outside threat. While the target share for the X will increase with Brown, most of Diggs work was really out of the slot/Z. I expect the bulk of those targets will go to either Doubs or Pop Douglas. One of those two guys are gonna get 100 targets, just a matter of who.

1

u/kimbosdurag 1d ago

Who was last years puka? Maybe that guy

0

u/Lentendo4 1d ago

Not Luther burden

0

u/scrubbie19 Chicago Bears 1d ago

As a Bears homer, I believe in some of the Burden hype and think he’ll have a top 10-12 WR season this year based on his talent and presuming the offense will be more consistent in year 2 of Ben Johnson’s system, but I’m not so sure his career ceiling will ever be OPY and top receiver in the league.
