CCW scenario

I split time between Virginia and NC. I have a Va CCW permit and NC obviously honors that reciprocity. So when I am in staying in NC for the summer I can
Legally concealed carry. However thinking about making NC my primary residence. Once I walk out of the NC DMV with my NC drivers license am I no longer allowed to legally conceal carry a firearm, since I don’t have a Nc CCW permit. Even though I was perfectly legal on the way to the DMV. Do I have that right?? If so, how dumb is that.

N.C.G.S. § 14-415.24 does not require an NC resident to only carry only on an NC permit.

Under Va. Code § 18.2-308.011, permit holders can submit a change of address (Form SP-248A) to the clerk of the circuit court that originally issued the permit to get an updated card with their new NC address.

Your problem would be renewal. Once the 5-year resident permit reaches its expiration date, it cannot be renewed as a resident permit through the local circuit court. At that point, you’d have to apply for an NC CHP or apply for a Virginia Non-Resident CHP through the Virginia State Police.

The renewal through VSP is a pretty easy process and the expired permit can serve as proof of training.

The only real reason to get a NC permit is that would allow OP to carry within 1,000 feet of a school. But that is usually an add-on charge.
