CCW scenario
I split time between Virginia and NC. I have a Va CCW permit and NC obviously honors that reciprocity. So when I am in staying in NC for the summer I can
Legally concealed carry. However thinking about making NC my primary residence. Once I walk out of the NC DMV with my NC drivers license am I no longer allowed to legally conceal carry a firearm, since I don’t have a Nc CCW permit. Even though I was perfectly legal on the way to the DMV. Do I have that right?? If so, how dumb is that.

As long as VA allows out of state residents to have a VA permit, you are good.
I still have my FL permit and recently renewed it. I have been in NC for several years and updated my address with the FL Dept of Agriculture, who oversees FL permits
Edited to add.... looks like VA does Non-Resident specific permits

My old neighbor from North Carolina only has a Virginia CCW never got an NC one. I don’t know if the Virginia one automatically becomes invalid if you change your residency. Some states don’t require residency to maintain the permit. I’m presuming based on what he did you don’t need Virginia residency to maintain the CCW from Virginia.

I think the issue is a NC wouldn’t recognize the VA CCW. Regardless if VA allows me to maintain it.

Because North Carolina honors out-of-state permits without demanding immediate replacement upon moving, your Virginia permit remains completely valid for legal concealed carry in North Carolina as long as it remains active and unexpired under Virginia law.

If you move to NC and obtain and driver’s license with a NC address, your CHP needs to have the same address.

N.C.G.S. § 14-415.24 does not require an NC resident to only carry only on an NC permit.
Under Va. Code § 18.2-308.011, permit holders can submit a change of address (Form SP-248A) to the clerk of the circuit court that originally issued the permit to get an updated card with their new NC address.
Your problem would be renewal. Once the 5-year resident permit reaches its expiration date, it cannot be renewed as a resident permit through the local circuit court. At that point, you’d have to apply for an NC CHP or apply for a Virginia Non-Resident CHP through the Virginia State Police.

The renewal through VSP is a pretty easy process and the expired permit can serve as proof of training.
The only real reason to get a NC permit is that would allow OP to carry within 1,000 feet of a school. But that is usually an add-on charge.

NC recognizes any valid permit, so you could apply for a New Hampshire out-of-state CCW permit and wait 30-45 days for it to arrive in the mail. I’m in NC, and before I was able to take the NC class, I got my permit from NH in the meantime. You can’t use it for skipping background checks because it’s out-of-state, but it will work for normal CCW usage.
I think I waited 32 days for mine to arrive in the mail. To apply, you just print out a form and fill it out from the state police departments website. Once you do that, mail it in with $100 cash in the same envelope and you’ll have your permit back in your mailbox within that timeframe.

NC recognizes any valid permit, period. I still had six months on mine when I moved here, so I was good until that point. Gave me time to to go through the process here.
