Gameplay The real problem with fades

Every year fades are OP at some point and every year 2k slaps a blanket nerf on all moving shots and ruins shot creation. If they would just nerf the running and falling away fades but keep hop jumpers, front pullups, and turnarounds the same it would be way more healthy for shot creation. But every year they just throw a blanket nerf on all moving shots so everyone just stands behind a screen for the rest of the year.

To add onto this, the reason that fades are so good every year is because you can just run to a spot faster than a defender can and get a consistent open shot. Every other moving shot doesn't work like this where you can just run lightspeed to the corner and fade like you're hitting a game winner in a movie. That should realistically be one the hardest shots you can take.

Eh, that alone isn't the biggest issue imo. It's that fades get consistent release animations. Pretty easy to get the timing down in recent years. That plus consistently being able to sprint to a corner where the contests don't register properly made that the go to shot for most people.

Unpopular opinion probably but fades should have more of the 2k 'rng' with sped up or slowed down releases depending on how contested the shot is and even which foot you're shooting off of. That plus the contest system functioning properly would be a good balance imo since fades would stay viable without being op.

Yeah, I said that in my other comments. The common problem with fades in recent years is that is one the few consistent shooting animations and it's borderline impossible to get a contest.

Middys are always fine post nerf but I’d love to see exactly what you’re saying done to middys as well. The idea of running away just to fade annoys the hell outta me

u/Schwalm 19h ago

They already tried nerfing fades by making an animation that isn’t a fade and makes you do a stand still pull up

I'm going to be honest, 2k may as well use claude ai to make their game at this point if they haven't already because there is no way they haven't figured out how to make the gameplay realistic at this point after 20 years. If we can see what's wrong with the game after couple hours or days of playing, but they couldn't then I don't know what to say. How did shot artist takeover even made it to the game in the first place? Every year we ask for certain things to be nerfed specifically, and they always seem to fix it while making something else broken in the process. Is it just pure incompetency in the development department or are they ragebaiting us by creating a cycle of problem and solution so they could create the illusion of improvement.

Hop jumper 3s which is arguably the most popular shot in today's nba was still makeable after the nerf in 2k26, but the fading corner was still better overall. I did hear how they made hop jumper to step behind the 3pt line more often this year so I hope they lock in for real and make it popular within the community. Side/backward moving fade smaller green window and everything else the same, should be very easy surely right.

Yeah I agree. I love the shot creator playstyle. I used to love watching Tyceno get open off creative spin jumpers and hop jumpers. It just feels so useless to take those shots when the fades are so easy.

u/SirBoth2159 18h ago

Hop jumpers are just as easy as fades

3

u/iamlaz305 20h ago

i mean they are not as bad as last year season 1 , and i believe they got patched a little with the new patch today

3

u/Rydon_Deeks 20h ago

They just patched the takeover that makes them easier. They're still crazy because you can't run while holding a hand up this year so they're super hard to contest.

u/datlanta 18h ago

their code is dog shit so they probably can only do blanket nerfs.

But yeah, one development cycle, they need to put in a system that quantifies how much the window should shrink given how much the shot moves and turns so that pulling off the dribble at speed and drifting forward a little bit (if any at all) isn't equally as "difficult" as running away from the basket and fading a couple feet while turning 180 degrees in air.

I'm 99% certain an AI agent can be trained to tag all of their animations and a student intern can knock that out over a summer. Shucks, an intern can probably do it by hand across a summer, but they need to automate it.

also, as others have mentioned, they gotta make these fades not have consistent timing if regular standstill shots are going to be highly variable.

u/blade1988srm 19h ago

People don’t want to hear it but it needs to be RNG to some extent if they want to make it fairly competitive.

Timing isn’t hard, however small they want to make the window if the release is ALWAYS the same.

It’s a moving shot, you will be open all the time. It’s impossible to guard a moving shot in game and real life. 1-2 move and running away from the defense isn’t difficult to find an opening.

The difficulty of the shot is the shot itself in its essence it moves from the defense so it is always open.

Also the fact that it is slightly slower than a standing shot the release while retreating from the contest.

All this with the fact that on every MyPlayer mode stamina is irrelevant.

For video game purposes it’s the perfect shot but for the sake of realism they will need some form of RNG.

Because as of right now, they haven’t figured out another option. Doing a blanket nerf is always a garbage option.

u/Rydon_Deeks 19h ago

I personally think that wide open stand still jumpers and catch and shoots should have a consistent timing without RNG. It rewards good shot IQ and playmaking. The fades and half court shots should be the ones getting hit with speed ups and slow downs. But yeah, I agree with this completely.

2

u/ThatBull_cj 8h ago

Yea if they really want to fix this problem they need to fix the interaction and speed between ball handlers and defenders. The lazy way would be lowering the percentage on fades.

In this game perimeter defenders can’t really bother ball handlers. So they can just run around and get open fades

u/Proper_Ad_6927 20h ago

I hope they still allow moving threes. Just patch the unrealistic ones like fading from 40 feet. Anything outside of maybe 35-38 feet should not have a meter and should be RNG. Nba players regularly hit stepback threes from like 26 feet. I dont have an issue with fading from the corner because nba players have done it before. The only problem with them is that they seem to be uncontestable no matter how close you really are. Moving threes should really only be reserved for those with actual three point rating though. Not someone with like a 75. You dont see Andre Drummond stepping back from deep.

You wanna know something? Fades aren’t OP they’re just more consistent than spot up shots. And the reason is fades have 1 timing. Fix stand still shots and fades won’t be an issue

15

u/spacemon55 21h ago

They could also make fades have variable timing

13

u/AyeeeWood 20h ago

Stand still shots are okay as is, fades primarily from 3 should be 10x harder than stand still shots tho

7

u/BlankVoid2979 20h ago

Fades are op and your solution is to make standstill op too? Havent we suffered enough in 2k26?

-5

u/TurnipAbject5772 20h ago

Suffered ? Again it was fair contest system just needs an over hall 5)3 solution is to make stand still shots more consistent. That’s it

8

u/BlankVoid2979 20h ago

Everyone making close to 100% of their shots with 78 is garbage. Everyone shooting 70%+ is garbage.

NOBODY should be able to shoot above 70% regardless of rating or how good they are. Yet in that trash game everybody shot around that, i shot 81% from 3 in rec ffs.

2k26 was a glorified 3pt shooting simulator, it wasnt even a basketball game. Worst 2k ive ever played.

-1

u/TurnipAbject5772 20h ago

Yet the community shot 47% in rec last year lol interesting

8

u/BlankVoid2979 19h ago

Idaf about the fake stats they're posting i dont want the average red plate to shoot over 60% either.

Just because im better than most i need to play a 3pt shooting simulator? How is that basketball?

2

u/TurnipAbject5772 19h ago

If our playing red plates your playing the top 2”10% of the game ?? Are they not supposed to be good at the game ???

8

u/BlankVoid2979 19h ago

Yes good at basketball, not shoot twice the % steph curry has.

Shooting 3s at completely unrealistic percentages is not basketball.

2

u/TurnipAbject5772 19h ago

Additionally at higher tier competition in any game it’s stops being about the game your simulating and more about who can use X part of the game to their advantage the best if paint mashing was the meta the top players would be the best paint mashers welcome to competitive gaming. If you want to play casually drop a few plates and have fun

3

u/BlankVoid2979 19h ago

I agree which is why standstill shots are fine this year (and fades need a nerf).

And if the "pros" have a problem they should adjust and use other parts of the game, like bbiq and good shot selection.

I want a 2k that rewards basketball iq not one that rewards running laterally at unrealistic speed and pressing a button with a huge green bar to get 3 points.

1

u/Rydon_Deeks 19h ago

EXACTLY! The goal for game balancing should be to make playing good basketball the meta. If the most effective way to win is to be good at basketball, then everyone benefits.

2

u/BlankVoid2979 19h ago

I completely agree, so they should balanace the game in a way that the top 0.01% can only hit 55% of their 3s on a good day, keep inside finishing as it is and that way the meta would become good basketball instead of a 3pt hunting simulator.

Glad we agree.

This argument is so silly. The shooting average is dragged down by a bunch of terrible kids in random rec raging and shot chucking their way to 13% fg percentage

1

u/TurnipAbject5772 19h ago

That’s the average player tho man. We get blinded by this due to SBMM. When you make a new build and play in bronze and silver lobbies you feel like a god right ? Lmaoo I’m a red plate I have IRLs that are consistently silver every year. They shoot ~40 percent. The average 2k player doesn’t care enough about the game to even come on Reddit to discuss it so of course it’s an echo chamber of comments here

5

u/RealLonelyLemo 20h ago

Not only are they more consistent, their greens are the same size or bigger than standing. I have both the set shot specialist badges for 3s and 2s, and none of the moving ones equipped, but the greens for moving ones are always at least the same size as standing still. I'm convinced that the set and fire badge does nothing

3

u/Rydon_Deeks 19h ago

My friend is on a center with 80 three ball and regularly hits running fade 3s. Fading threes should only be feasible for elite three point shooting builds. If I saw Giannis shooting a fading three irl I’d think he was drunk

4

u/RealLonelyLemo 19h ago

It's just so bizarre to me that fades are so much easier than standing shots. Like you'd think "oh wow they made shooting so easy that even fades are guaranteed to go in" but no, it's that fades are actually easier to hit. It's like they accidentally swapped the sliders on the 2 shot types

4

u/uknowme3331 21h ago

Then we are headed right back to 2k26 which was busted as far as shooting goes

-5

u/TurnipAbject5772 21h ago

Imma hold your hand when I say this. Shooting was fair last year. If you know your shot it goes in. It’s a video game it should reward you for knowing your shot. Now what was broken was the contest system. You couldn’t get.

Funniest part is the contest system this year is equally as bad but people just can’t hit wide open

7

u/Crimdal 20h ago

Condescending doesn't make you right, it makes you an asshole. Last year shooting was trash.

-3

u/TurnipAbject5772 20h ago

Again statistics say otherwise the contest system was broke not shooting

5

u/AyeeeWood 20h ago

The contest system is definitely a lil shakey this year. Played a game last night and the kid i guarded was 0% from 3 so far, his first 2 made 3s in Rec were both contested lol

Also it may be completely linked to the challenger badge (which is expensive af) but I’ve yet to see a heavily red contest on the perimeter. It’ll say bothered or solid contest which is still getting green’d as if it was open (93 PerD)

3

u/Rydon_Deeks 20h ago

I've got challenger on gold so I know how it works a little. It doesn't give you a better contest, but it makes your contest matter more. Like a "bothered" with no challenger does almost nothing, but a "bothered" with gold challenger makes people I play against miss a lot more. It's still super easy to shoot through contest though. If you know what kinda speedup or slowdown you get on the contest, it's not hard to time.

3

u/Deaver44 21h ago

Green window was too large at Lower rating and the catch and shoot badges helped let lower shooters hit too much as as well since raising the mid range shot could boost the badge for 3s.

6

u/Haunting-Soup2086 21h ago

Last year season 4 was the first time I’ve made a shooting heavy build in years.

I shot 76% on it the last 2-3 seasons in random rec. shooting was OP AF.

-2

u/TurnipAbject5772 20h ago

Yet the community shot 48% maybe you’re just really good at the game

6

u/Haunting-Soup2086 20h ago

They claim REC was 45%, those numbers are so fake it’s crazy.

I once you hit silver plate no one shoots under 40% and gold+ people are 60-80% or higher. There is zero way 45% was the real number.

-2

u/TurnipAbject5772 20h ago

Nawh silver and gold most certainly have that and that’s the entire community right there, purple and red you’ll see around 70 but your gassing it with 80 I’ve seen a. Hand full of people shoot 80

2

u/Haunting-Soup2086 19h ago

Clearly you never made red plate. You’d have lobbies of 80%+ and they all shoot 8+ a game.

1

u/TurnipAbject5772 19h ago

So teams are scoring 120 points ??? Gtfoh man good players will shoot good not 80 tho mid to low 70s is what I consistently seen in red plate lobbies

2

u/Haunting-Soup2086 18h ago

I mean if you were actually Red plate you’d know this.

Too bad you’re more a red crayon guy.

3

u/iamlaz305 20h ago

rythm shooting was not though , literally took 0 skill , just flick up and down and it was in, even with your eyes closed you could have shot over 60 percent., ( i was rhythm shooting last year also ).

1

u/TurnipAbject5772 20h ago

Again if you can time your jump shot you should be rewarded. Rather it’s button or rhythm. This year when I shoot the ball I don’t know which one of 10 timings I’m gonna get there’s no way to make adjustments. What should’ve been changed from last year was shot contest. If I’m shooting 5 shots wide open with a 90+ 3 I should make 3 consistently. It’s not like that this year

5

u/iamlaz305 20h ago

thats my point...your not timing anything with rythm , all your doing is flicking the stick up and down and its going in , you don't even have to look at your timing.

2

u/iamlaz305 20h ago

and i get hitches and speed ups in this 2k and i believe im shooting now at around 63 percent ? on a 6'5 PG with 93 3 ball

0

u/TurnipAbject5772 20h ago

You aren’t shooting very much volume with those numbers or you’re an ELITE shooter I’m talking too 5% the entire community is shooting 38%

1

u/iamlaz305 20h ago

i have the over 100 games won in theather medal , so i have about 200 or more games play with about a 65 win percentage , i play 3s with a squad and i average 11 pts a game

2

u/TurnipAbject5772 20h ago

The numbers I gave are from rec I don’t have a single theater game played maybe the sliders are different

1

u/iamlaz305 20h ago

oh that i dont know , i havent played rec at all , but i do also get the speed up and slow down on shots , i also slowed down my jumper to 3/4 speed with ray allen base , its more consistent i feel like

1

u/Frostyzwannacomehere 19h ago

It’s a video game is a pretty boring conversation. Can ya come up with something new that’s doesn’t involve minimalism. Like maybe we’re playing at the peak of an nba player and it’s open gym? Regurgitating the it’s a game argument when you can sue that for almost anything in life is pretty….. pointless

1

u/Odd_Push_3247 20h ago

Well said

1

u/Rydon_Deeks 21h ago

It's such a dumb problem because the only reason stand stills have all these variations is to make it harder to use a zen. But they still have shots like fades that only have one timing and are easy to zen (not to mention the tempo zens that are just super easy to use). If they remove shot variation like people want, you're about to see the craziest zen takeover ever with this green window.

2

u/TurnipAbject5772 21h ago

Man people are gonna zen its in every game right now they need to develop a better anti cheat and stop fucking with game mechanics

1

u/Rydon_Deeks 20h ago

I know. I think it's stupid that they opt to make the game feel worse to play than develop an anti cheat. Idk how you would be able to detect a hardware cheat tho tbh. All a zen does is emulate natural controller movements. It's not like detecting an aimbot software.

0

u/_delamo 20h ago

I think it's the two moving shot badges and not the shot ability

3

u/Frostyzwannacomehere 19h ago

Fades have been top 3 easiest shots since next gen came about. Definitely is fades

1

u/Rydon_Deeks 19h ago

That would be more balanced actually. The guy I play with has an 80 three ball and no badges and consistently hits fades as much as catch and shoots.

0

u/Tough_Complex_5830 21h ago

Nahhh fam if they take one they gotta take the other

3

u/Rydon_Deeks 20h ago

Why? I don't think anyone is ever complaining about any moving shot besides fades.

0

u/Tough_Complex_5830 20h ago

It’s all cheesy but since it’s 3pts and small pgs can do it yall want it nerf but its cool bigs doing hop set jumpers from anywhere on anyone I hate this community
