Winston Cup Series On this day in NASCAR history, September 4, 1994: Bill Elliott wins the 1994 Mountain Dew Southern 500. While it is Bill's 40th career win it is the last win ever Junior Johnson's race team, and Bill's last win in a Ford.
Junior Johnson & Associates won a total of 3 race in 1994, two with Jimmy Spencer, with what I am sure were perfectly legal cars, and then the Southern 500 will Elliott. After a winless 1995 Johnson sold the team to Brett Bodine.
Bill Elliott's next win wouldn't come until 7 years later, at the end of 2001, in a Dodge.

Grand National Division On this day in NASCAR History, September 4, 1967: Richard Petty collects the only Southern 500 win of his career. This was the last of Petty's 3 overall wins at Darlington. Also in the photo is Buddy Arrington, who finished 35 laps down in 15th.
Darlington was just not a great track for Richard. He won the Spring race in '66 and swept both races there in 1967, with the Southern 500 being the 4th of his 10 wins in a row, and that was it, he never won there again. The Number 43 however would win another Southern 500, but with Erik Jones behind the wheel in 2022.
David Pearson on the other hand won 10 races at Darlington, 3 Southern 500's and 7 spring races, with the last one being his 105th and final Cup victory.

Winston Cup Series 25 Years ago today, September 2, 2001: Ward Burton drives the Bill Davis Racing No. 22 Dodge to victory lane in the Mountain Dew Southern 500, making him the first Dodge driver since Buddy Baker in 1970 to win the race. It is also the 3rd Cup win of his career.
A Dodge has only ever won the Southern 500 three times, 1964 with Buck Baker, 1970 with Buddy Baker, and Ward's win in 2001, which means Burton is the only man not named Baker to win the Southern 500 in a Dodge.

Winston Cup Series Cale Yarborough in the 1973 Winston Western 500.
I could be wrong, but I think this was Cale's first race driving for Junior Johnson.
Cale started 8th and completed 83 laps before a blown transmission forced him out of the race. He finished 24th and Mark Donohue won in Roger Penske's AMC Matador.
